Is the AC making me and my baby keep getting upper respiratory infections?

It's possible, but I'd see a doctor if I were you. Do you have central air or is it a window unit? If it's a window unit, I highly suggest that you give it a close inspection. I don't think that cool air will make you sick, but if you have another problem, it can certainly compound it! Did you know that it's possible to contract Legionnaire's Disease if you have stagnant water in your window unit? You could also have an issue with mold or mildew if you keep getting reoccurring respiratory infections. Again, for your baby's sake, I can't urge you enough to see your doctor. About three years ago, I lived in a large (4000 sq ft.) very nice rental home. It was built in the 60s and was just awesome! From maybe a month after I moved into the house, I started having upper respiratory tract infections. After a year of that, I finally went to the doctor. After another six months of antibiotics and decongestants, my doctor suggested I have the house I was living in checked for mold. Guess what? The insides of the walls were riddled with the stuff. I moved two weeks later and haven't had any problems since. Now, that's not to say you have mold in your home, but it says, to me, that there's a problem and it ain't the AC, dear! Good luck!  (+ info)

How does cilia becoming immobile and disappearing relate to an increase of respiratory infections in smokers?

Cilia in respiratory pathways are used to push out the mucus that captures particles/bacteria and other things that can lead to an infection. So when a person smokes, their cilia become damaged and their bodies are thus unable to expel of the mucus/particles, leaving them to remain in the body and cause infections.  (+ info)

Are upper respiratory infections contagious?

This may be a stupid question, but my friends daughter has an upper respiratory infection and I was wondering if it was safe to socialize at her house?
----------

She has a cold.

So yes.

If she stays in her room and doesn't mingle with the rest of the group, then you should be okay.

Use your common sense. Would you go to to a movie if you had a cold? Would you want to be a movie if someone sits a few feet away has a cold?

Wash your hands a lot.. after shaking people's hands, touching the door knobs, etc.  (+ info)

How do you establish that infection causes due to floating microbes, virus in the atm in operation theater?

It is said that there is little evidence to show that air plays a significant role in the transmission of most healthacre-associated infections ( respiratory diseases). How do I defy this statement?
----------

Well that's completely absurd because almost every fungal opportunistic infection that takes place in a hospital is from an airborne exposure (breathing in spores and fungal fragments) Many bacterial and viral infecions have airborne vectors as well. This is why I hate hospitals, they're supposed to be clean antiseptic places but they're really giant germ traps where people with compromised immune systems are at serious risk.  (+ info)

The influenza virus infects cells lining the respiratory tract of humans.?

Is it likely to infect cells lining the respiratory tract of most other mammals?
----------

Yes it does!! Influenza virus infects epithelial cells lining the respiratory mucosa. Some virus are species - specific....this is the reason why some animal viruses cannot infect humans and vice versa. Mammals may be infected if the species are closely related i.e. primates.  (+ info)
