If you have no gag reflex and you were choking, would the heimlich maneuver work?

Because I had mono and my tonsils swelled up to baseballs, I have no gag reflex. Sometimes food gets stuck in my throat, right were it would normally make me gag, but I can't gag it up or anything. I just have to take a breath and try swallowing, otherwise it'd feel like I was going to choke.
So anyways, I was wondering, if I was choking, would the hiemlich maneuver work, even though I don't have a gag reflex?

What can i do to get rid of acid reflex while pregnant?

i'm 34 weeks preg and i have been suffering from bad acid reflex how can i get rid of the burning that won't harm the baby???
1 hour ago - 4 days left to answer.
----------

My doctor told me Pepcid AC. But I didn't want to take a lot of it, so I got some bread and water. The bread helped a lot and the water just basically "cooled" it down.

They say milk can help, but then I read it can make it worse. But it felt good drinking it. lol.

Good luck and I hope you feel better!  (+ info)

Is there any possible way to help a baby with cerebral palsy to gain a gag reflex?

My friend's baby was just born about a week ago, but there were some complications with the pregnancy and the umbelical cord suffocated the baby. He had to be revived and it's too early to tell what parts of the brain have been affected. He doesn't have a gag reflex yet, and is being fed with tubes. All she wants is for her son to show everyone that he can swallow so she can take him home and care for him. I don't normally pray or ask for people to do so, but I don't know what else to do and I want some sort of hope things will work out.
He finaly can breast feed now! I'm so happy he can finally be home soon. The doctors said that there is over a 80% chance he'll be in a wheelchair... they are so pessimistic. I'm so mad because they should have done a ceserean according to the ultrasound pictures. They even broke her water without telling her. There was definately some malpractice going on, so I hope they get compensated for all the costs of therapy treatments. Either way her baby will be loved and cared for very well. Only time will tell the severity of the braindamage due to loss of oxygen.
----------

My husband's cousin has Down syndrome and she was fed via a g-tube for the first year of her life. She never drank from a bottle; she went straight from the g-tube to solid foods.

Her mother said it was actually easier, because they could schedule when they fed the baby so that she never got hungry at night. She slept through the night from day one.

Depending on how severe the brain damage is, he may never gain a gag reflex. I would think that if the mother is willing, tube feeding would not be the only reason the baby can't go home. Hopefully once he is stronger, he can go home and she can feed him however he needs to be fed. I am sure she wants him home, but the hospital is probably the best place for him right now. The staff there can show her exactly what he needs, and teach her how to care for him once he does get to go home.

Your friend also needs to ask the doctor's about your state's early intervention programs. She can get free services in her home from the state that will help him get the best start possible. The services they get will depend on his needs, but the earlier they start the better off he will be. The early interventionist can evaluate the child to see exactly what he needs, and teach the family how to help achieve his maximum potential.

I hope she is able to take her son home soon. I can't imagine having to leave a little one like that at the hospital.  (+ info)

Is there a way to surpress the gag reflex?

I want to go for a dental cleaning but have a hyper sensitive gag reflex. I can barely brush my back teeth, although I manage to. Is there a way to surpress this reflex?
----------

Put 'SALT' into your hand, small amount, lean your head back and toss the SALT to the back of your throat. Of course, you will spit a bit at first, it will stop the gag reflex for a period.
I learned this from my own dentist when he wanted to make impressions of my teeth. I could not stop gagging when he would put that mouth piece in. But after he tossed some salt to the back of my throat, and I spitted, had no problem.  (+ info)

What does it mean when the doctor taps your knee cap to stretch the tendon but you have no reflex?

What's going on in your body that causes you to fail the reflex test?
----------

Most commonly it's because the doctor misses the "magic spot" or because your muscle isn't relaxed when he tries to elicit the knee jerk response.

Rarely, it would be due to a lower motor neurone lesion, like a spinal cord problem or a problem with compression of a specific nerve.  (+ info)

When does the Rooting Reflex stop in babies?

Babies have what is called the Rooting Reflex when they are born. When do they 'outgrow' this reflex? My son is almost 3 years old, and still does this in his sleep, and even when he is awake.
----------

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primitive_reflexes#Rooting_reflex
Rooting reflex

The rooting reflex is present at birth and assists in breastfeeding, disappearing at around four months of age as it gradually comes under voluntary control. A newborn infant will turn their head toward anything that strokes their cheek or mouth, searching for the object by moving their heads in steadily decreasing arcs until the object is found. After becoming used to responding in this way (if breastfed, approximately three weeks after birth), the infant will move directly to the object without a "search".  (+ info)

How do you get rid of a gag reflex ?

I hate my gag reflex, because whenever I'm brushing my teeth, I gag and it's really gross. Any suggestions? It's like, I gag even when it's in the middle of my tongue, and I gag on food when I'm chewing sometimes. I hate it.

How can I get rid of my gag reflex due to anxiety?

I suffer from anxiety disorder and one of the reasons I don't like to go out to restaurants or parties is because I get the horrible gag reflex I can't control due to my nervousness and I feel like Im going to vomit in front of everyone. Do you think hypnosis would help?
----------

Friend - I am not much of a believer in hypnosis, but I have seen others helped with anxiety by it.

Your problem is one of the less common of the anxiety symptoms people like us go through. I experience it myself though not at restaurants, at "gorey things" I see and smell.

I often keep dramamine with me as it does help a little, but I also have to take medication (I have other symptoms as well and have had for 22 years). I have heard there is some kind of medicine or spray that helps relieve the gag response itself, but I have not researched it.

If you have not yet, try to buy a copy of Dr. Edmund Bourne's Anxiety and Phobia Workbook. It is so good. Maybe learning some of the relaxation techniques (including SELF- hypnosis) might be an answer.

Good luck to you and GBY.  (+ info)
