How long does it take for a fractured radius bone to heal completely?

It takes 6 weeks to heal to the point where you can use it again, but full bone healing takes another 3-4 months after that. Don't get worried or nervous, the first 6 weeks it heals about 75-80% and is fully functional, the rest just takes a little longer the perfect.  (+ info)

Charged a $900 fee for a broken radius fracture that didn't need to be set plus cast and office fee. Normal?

Is this normal or too high. I didn't need to have the bone reset or anything. Seems excessive for mearly looking at an xray and putting a cast on.

How is supination made difficult with a radius fracture near the wrist.since in originates at the elbow.?

I broke my wrist (Colles fracture) and am having a horrible time regaining strength and motion... especially supination.. I had surgery and the pins which were sticking outiside the skin and in the bone under the cast were removed.. it has been about 1 month since the cast was removed and I have much stiffness and pain. I am in therapy, but it is slow.. any suggestions or ideas on the recovery time.. thanks for any imut..

i have something similar right now. radius fracture with volar plate and screws, had pt evaluation today - doctor never gave me any info about what or how long things would take! now i have to wait for insurance to ok more PT, i cant move my wrist or straighten the last 3 fingers. also lots of pain in wrist, elbow and shoulder from muscle atrophy. and now pain in my other arm/wrist from overuse. no one will give me any idea on how long recovery will be - including this forum. i cant even get hold of my surgeon anymore!
we should keep in touch and compare notes to try to get better quicker. i was told to buy pineapple/juice and something that has enzymes in it for helping rebuild muscles or helps clear out scar tissue - sorry dont exactly remember what was said. but i bought today a bottle of BROMELAIN 500MG (is a proteolytic enzyme) aids in digestion of proteins, WOBENZYM systemic oral enzyme formula supports the bodys own defense, then some more vitamins. somewhere i read b-6 b-12 is needed too.
the pt gave me some exercises to do- but i would rather be there doing them. home is impossible! here is my email - if it is allowed. [email protected]  (+ info)

how serious is a buckle fracture of the radius, and an ulna scaphoid fracture?

My 8yr old was in pe yesterday and fell. She has a buckle fracture and a ulna scaphoid fracture. She cried at impact, but hasnt shown much pain since then. Is this something that should be causing her pain..or does she have a high pain tollerence? he said the buckle was on both sides of her radius. will this require surgery,
----------

the worst of the injuries is the scaphoid fracture. it is the slowest healing of all the bones. this type of fracture you do not want to mess around with and if it is not healed up in 8 weeks ( x-ray will confirm healing) i would consult a orthopedic surgeon. basically there is two blood vessels that come into this bone and it depends on where the break is on weather it will heal up. most kids that break this bone dont even know that they broke it- they just think they sprained it. this bone is located at the base of the thumb where it attaches to the radius.  (+ info)

Medical Terminology question, What does it mean when I sad "distal radius fracture on left arm"?

I understand that the fracture was on the left arm (distal, which is far away from the body right?)

Can anyone explain with more detail,
----------

The radius is the larger of the two bones of the forearm. The end toward the wrist is called the distal end. A fracture of the distal radius occurs when the area of the radius near the wrist breaks.

I hope that helps.  (+ info)

what is angulation of the distal radius mean?

after an xray from a wrist injury i was told i have angulation of the distal radius on the dorsal aspect..and that it may represent a fracture, but obviously they not sure...is it not normal to have angulation??? can anyone translate please, they want to xray again in 10 days dont know why???
----------

It means that the bone is bent. When an orthopedic doctor looks at the end of the radius they draw a line on the AP view (anterior/posterior and x-ray taken when your hand is flat on the x-ray plate) from the tip of the radius to the other tip of the radius and all the way across to the other bone. This line tells them if the length of the bone is still intact. ( the end of the radius should be longer than the ulnar).

On the lateral view (the wrist is x-rayed on the side with your thumb pointing to the ceiling) the orthopedist will draw a line along the center of the bone and then draw a line at the end of the bone from bottom to top ( the lines look like a T when they intersect) They then measure the angle at the line at the top of the T to see how much it has a angulated. The normal angle is fifteen degrees of volar angulation ( radius is tilted down a little, it allows you to reach for things on the top shelf ) If the angle on your radius is tilted up in the other direction then you will lose the ability to reach for stuff on the top shelf of your kitchen cabinet. When you reach for things your wrist bends down.

He needs to tell you this so that you wont come after him with a team of lawyers from Harvard Law School accusing him of malpractice. lol

Anyway he's smart in getting another x-ray in ten days because it may represent an old injury that you weren't aware of which may have caused the angulation or it may represent a new injury. In ten days it will be determined by the formation of callus formation over the "fracture" site. If there is no callus ( calcium buildup ) along the "fracture" then he knows it's an old injury you had and that you don't really have a new injury of the bone and that it isn't broken but perhaps a contusion or sprain of one of the ligaments in your wrist.

He's very smart. lol  (+ info)

I broke my ulna + radius. my wrist is now misaligned. What are the causes and practicle issuse of this?

I got it out of the cast almost 2 weeks ago and im worried that I wont be able to return to a full range of motion. Im also worried this makes it more likely that I will fracture my wrist.
----------

I broke mine 35 years ago and always considered it just to expensive to fix.
It only hurts when I do blunt force tasks and when there is a low pressure system around. opening jars can make it feel just like the day I broke it.
Just another pain to deal with forever. Such is life.
Alieve seems to work when it hurts and a DMSO treatment will make the pain go away for sometime.
And yes I have developed an arthritic spur on the break.  (+ info)

What is the radius threshold you need to walk (in a circle) to not feel dizzy anymore?

If you walk in a circle with radius 2 inches then you will feel dizzy, but if you walked in a circle of radius 2 miles, you wouldn't.

Does anyone know the threshold radius between human dizziness and no dizziness? And if it's a fuzzy line depending on the individual and what they consider "dizziness" then you can describe this range.

I think about weird things lol.
----------

Very interesting question. lol Sounds like the kind of questions I come up with when I think too much. I would say it really depends on the speed you are moving. No evidence to support this, but my guess would be anything bigger then a circle with a diameter of over 20ft or so wouldn't make you dizzy at a rate with a normal human could run. Obviously with artificial means they could go faster and would get dizzy in a larger circle. Here is a link with just general info... http://www.emedicinehealth.com/dizziness/article_em.htm

I couldn't find anything on circling causing dizziness. My guess people could also be "trained" to not get dizzy. I mean pilots and astronauts go thru some sort of training to keep them from getting sick with the tight turns at high speed a aircraft can make.  (+ info)

Hairline fracture of radius/wrist--do I need a cast?

It doesn't hurt too badly but I would prefer a cast. Do doctors refrain from casting hairline fractures of the distal radius/wrist region?
----------

depends on the location of the said fracture, don't forget there is referred pain and the area of discomfort may not be the actual area of injury, so you may want a professional opinion..it's worth the cost of an xray to prevent permanent damage to your wrist..you don't say your age but i assume you still need it so give it some thought and be well.  (+ info)

How can i tell if my stress fractures are healed?

Sustained stress fractures during bct. Has been roughly eight weeks since. How do I know if it's safe to run on them again? There is still slight pain if I jog, but walking is no problem. Is this just residual pain? Is any pain at all at this point normal?
