How can the doctor tell the difference between a breast cyst and a tumor?

My mom's been having pain in her breasts for a long time, and about six months ago a big red bulge showed up on her breast.
The doctor dismissed it as a cyst and didn't do anything.
The redness disappeared, but last week she noticed a lump in her breast, and the doctor finally admitted that it was a little off.

She's been referred to a clinic for a mammogram, but I'm still curious as to how they can tell.
I'm kind of worried.
----------

I'm a doctor. Generally, we can tell based on a physical exam. That is the key. However, despite a relatively normal feeling cyst, some women may go on to develop cancer. Another important factor is the interview with your mom. For instance, if the size and pain vary with her menstrual cycle, or with diet (caffeine, smoking makes it worse)...then it is most likely a cyst (called a fibrocystic disease), however if it is persistent, with persistent increase in size and changes on the skin (redness, retracting skin) then it is exhibiting features that would be more concerning. In that case, I generally get an ultrasound of the breast (in a younger woman b/c it's a better test) and in an older woman I get a mammogram.

You should just wait until you get the results of the test back. I wish your mom the best!  (+ info)

What can be done about a 14cm cyst in the ovary ?

My mom has a 14cm cyst in the ovary , and the doctors are going to remove it. What can be done about this if she didn't take it out ?
Or does anyone has any experience about this ? Can any safe medication heal a cyst ? Im really curious thanks for the help.
----------

It would be best to remove it. I had a cyst that grew and then got so big that it twisted my ovary and I had to have an emergency surgery to remove not only my cyst but also my ovary

Now I have to take a low dose of birth control to help minimize the risk of a cyst on my other ovary.

I don't think there is any other kind of medicine to get rid of one. Because the cyst is already there...some cysts do come and go but if it is already so large I really would suggest the surgery so she doesn't have a scare like I did!  (+ info)

Can a previous ovarian cyst that exploded raise the chance of misscarrage?

My girlfriend had a cyst explode on her ovary about 4 or 5 months back and sh says it will be lucky if she carries it all the way through. Is this true?
----------

Ovarian cysts are normal, I have had many of them. They won't effect the pregnancy though if she is pregnant, or gets pregnant. Tell her not to stress and worry about taking care of the baby when it gets here. Good luck, I'm not judging, but a baby needs both parents, so if you are the dad step up to the plate.  (+ info)

What's the difference between genital herpes and a cyst?

Does herpes usually come in packs of sores? Because I think if you have a bartholin's gland cyst it's usually just one large sore near the vaginal opening... but I'm not sure. What are all the differences?
----------

herpes comes in clusters of blisters....a bartholin cyst is inder the skin and normally does not erupt into a sore  (+ info)

What is recovery time for laparotomy to remove a dermoid cyst?

Anyone have personal experience in recovery time from a laparotomy? It is for removal of a large dermoid ovarian cyst. Doctor is predicting 6 weeks off work, but I'm hoping it won't take that long! Laparoscopy isn't an option unfortunately.
----------

6 weeks sounds reasonable. You might be able to go back after 4 weeks if you have a desk job.  (+ info)

What is usually found in a complex cyst in the breast?

I have found a lump which looks on ultrasound to be a fluid cyst but on the other breast there was a complex cyst which will be aspirated .What would it be if not fluid ?
----------

I have a Fibroadenoma in one breast and although a small amount of fluid was drained (for a needle biopsy) the rest is just solid tissue.
Does the lump move around when you touch it? Mine does and that is one of the main characteristics of Fibroadenomas- just speak to your GP about it or research it online.  (+ info)

What are some symptoms of an ovarian cyst?

I think I might have an ovarian cyst. I had sharp pains in my side around my ovulation time, and i feel nauseous sometimes. I also have small pains when I eat. Has anyone had those symptoms with an ovarian cyst?
----------

Ovulation can naturally cause women pain. Ovarian cysts can be very, very small, or they can grow to be very large. Do you ever have any pain at any other time? Ovarian cysts often cause extreme pain all the time. My friend had horrible pain all the time, but since she couldn't afford the doctors bills, she let it go. It finally got so bad that she was rushed to the ER. They did surgery and realized that it had grown to be the size of an orange. Most women experience weight gain, fatigue nausea, and abnormal bleeding. You should go to the doctor, and they will probably watch it for a couple months to see if it is growing. If it is something other than a cyst, it is still wise to see a gyno and have it checked out.  (+ info)

How fast does a cyst grow, does this sound like one?

Can it be painful when you touch a cyst? My mom and all my siblings got cysts. I think I might have gotten one on m forehead, but how am I sure if it's a cyst or a pimple? I don't have acne problems, and it's kind of big. Been there for 3 days. Opinions?
----------

This is an old method, from an old person (me). Put a bit of rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball and apply to the bump once n the morning and once at night. This well help dry it up and also kills any bacteria.

Also, apply a warm compress to it and if it is a pimple/boil it will come to a head. If it is a cyst, it will help it liquefy and reabsorb in you body.

A sebaceous cyst is filled with kertatin matter--usually a thick white material. A cyst can become infected and have the mannerisms of a large and very painful pimple.
