Why might the left side of my jaw hurt at night?

Every night, I'm in agony - the left side of my jaw and all of its teeth hurt... I can't sleep. Every night I'm suffering. I went to the dentist on Thursday. He took two X-Rays and couldn't find anything of note. He took another x-ray from a different angle, and still, he didn't see anything obvious - said he didn't see abcesses, or anything - just some deep fillings he thought might be wondered about. A tap test didn't really result in anything - I didn't feel anything tied to any of the spots he tapped. And during the day, I really don't notice anything.

He didn't prescribe antibiotics. he talked about "dying teeth" as a potential thing that might be happening, but didn't say he saw anything on the x-rays, and he didn't do anything for me... even kind of said 'sorry I didn't find anything definitive.'

But I suffer - every night. So I did some Internet research on my own. The Wikipedia article for "pulpitus" sounds a lot like my symptoms, particularly "pulpitis can create so much p

Go to another dentist to get a 2nd opinion. My regular dentist didn't find two problems I had in my life.

One was a crack in a tooth, the other time it was a small piece of tooth that another dentist had left behind when he pulled it.

If it's due to a filling too close to the nerve you may have to have a root canal (which kills the tooth, and thus the pain, and then have it crowned. $$$

Other thoughts are TMJ (TemporoMandibular Joint Syndrome), clenching and grinding... all of which could cause those problems.

Read up on those. The only solution to clenching and grinding is to use a mouthpiece, which I won't do either, even though I do it and it causes me problems.  (+ info)

What is radial treatment?

'' for toothache due to special diseases of the teeth, such as dental caries, acute pulpitis, periodontitis (...), the radial treatment for such diseases should be given to the patients rather than simple analgesic treatment. "

what is it called when the pulp of a tooth can be saved?

I have an teacher at school that is known for her trick questions. (ofcourse she doesnt call them that..she says to "not read into it...just answer the question as it is stated). So given that.. if the question had read..."What is it called when a pulp can be saved?" choices were... A. Irreversible Pulpitis / B. Reversable Pulpitis/ C.Pulp Capping or D. All of the above. I would have answered B..
But her question read as follows.... What is it called when a tooth can be saved? with the same choices for possible answers... and everyone knowing how she is... we all chose.. D... since the tooth does not have to be lost in any of those circumstances... (we are thinking she just worded her question wrong but doesnt want to own up to that..) lol tell me your thoughts please
----------

In an irreversible pulpitis, the pulp cannot be saved and it must be removed and a root canal done if the tooth is to be saved. B and C can result in the pulp healing and the tooth saved. D is wrong. Your teacher did not ask a question that allows a proper answer from the choices you had.  (+ info)

Painful tooth in a crown after a root canal treatment?

Had a porcelin crown put on a tooth with a cracked filling. 6 wks later developed pain and cold sensitivity. No pain with tapping. ? reversible pulpitis per gen dentist.1mo later had root canal through the crown by endodontist who seemed to be in a rush. General dentist did not agree with root canal but pain was hard to bear and I agreed. Lived on Advil for 1mo. Did OK until permanent filling was put in. Then in 2 weeks tooth became sensitive to touch and hard to bite down. Dentist took adjusted the bite and took the tooth "out of occlusion" 3d ago, and asked to wait 2-3 weeks. Things seem to be getting worse and not better. What is happening? Do I need to see somebody for a second opinion?
Tooth now is not sensitive to cold but to touch and biting down. Endodontist did not see a fracture throught the microscope and on XR. The RCT was done 2mo ago, general densitis seems to thinks it may not have healed yet and thus is sensitive to touch. The painful tooth is the one after RCT, the others around do not hurt.
The tooth is a last lower molar. before RCT I had a lot of pain shooting in different directions (ear, head, jaw). In 1 mo it was not getting better, was hard to function with this pain day and night.
Also after RTC (i about 2weeks) the tooth was feeling decent for about 1mo. It flared in the last 2 weeks, would it be painful all the time if fracture was present?

It sounds to me like you may have referred pain. Is this a top or a bottom tooth? The nerves to all teeth branch off of the same nerve, so sometimes the signal get scrambled. Most teeth will have reversible pulpitis after a crown. 3% will need a root canal in the first year. It's also possible to have a vertical fracture in the tooth. This would account for the pain with pressure. If it's a top tooth, then the sinuses might be involved. Your dentist sounds like a reasonable, and conservative diagnostician. Ask the dentist to do some selective numbing. This numbs specific teeth/areas to help determine which tooth or teeth are involved. The endodontist sounds like a loose cannon. If you had reversible pulpitis, a root canal should probably not have been done. Get some diagnostic tests to check for specific tooth and get an evaluation for vertical fracture. Your dentist may be able to do this. If not, see a different endodontist.  (+ info)

EXTREME Sensitivity to cold - haven't had teeth cleaned in a month.?

I had 2 cavities filled on the bottom left, then had teeth cleaned 2 days later. I felt fine, and this was late April. Then yesterday morning, woke up, drank tap water, and experienced excruciating pain in almost all teeth in the left side of my mouth. I've been using a sensitive toothpaste for a week and a half. Everything chilled that i eat has to be microwaved for a few seconds. I just read that it could be pulpitis??
If anyone with dental knowledge could shed some light as to what this might be, I would appreciate it :)

Keep using the sensitive toothpaste. It takes about 2 weeks to start doing its job. If your fillings were at all deep and close to the nerve, then you will probably have some sensitivity off and on. This is completely normal. You may also be having some gum recession in that area. Are you a hard brusher? Try massaging in circles instead of scrubbing. You also want to go somewhere and buy a fluoridated mouth rinse. The fluoride will help block the tubules in the enamel which cause sensitivity. Hope this helps.  (+ info)

Pulp capping course of action?

Hi,

6th lower right molar. Number of carious spots (now removed). I and the dentist decided to crown it. Tooth wasn't symptomatic till the enamel/carious dentin was removed. After she filed it in preparation for the crown the dentin was exposed for 2-3 days (waiting for the crown to arrive). Tooth became sensitive to cold and pressure (couldn't chew on it). I supposed that's normal, given the dentin was completely exposed. On the second night the pain became strong enough to wake me up, and I figured a pulpitis was coming up, because of the trauma/possible leakage (note, that pulp is not exposed itself). Went to the dentist's office. We both agreed we wanted to save the pulp rather than going directly for a RCT, mainly because of the importance of this molar and the risks of breakage of a dead, crowned tooth. Dentist is currently attempting a pulp capping with calcum hydroxide I think. Pain almost gone now (after 48 hours), very minor couple of times per day.

In the worst case I guess if all fails, we'll go for RTC, which I really want to avoid, given how many dead teeth I have already :-] My question is: how long is it advisable to keep the pulp cap material before installing the crown (to make sure the pulp has recovered)? Any other advise here? Thanks.

Could I sue my dentist?

I went to a dentist about two years ago, i had four cavities filled. Shortly after, two of the four teeth became very painful, hot and cold sensitive, and very very sensitive to pressure. he was also very rough with the shots, causing bruising and stiffness in the jaw. I went to another dentist, and was told i had pulpitis in both teeth. The new dentist removed the fillings, tried to gently clean the tooth, then replaced it with a metal filling. I went for another year, but one of the teeth suddenly wouldnt stop hurting, and brought me to tears. Had it removed, and now the other tooth is aching all the time as well, and is going to have to be removed. I am very angry, because the visit to get the cavities fixed to my previouse dentist, cost alot of money, and i had to have two teeth pulled as a result of what he did, plus had bruises do to how rough he was in my mouth.
----------

I don't think your case would stand. Dentists usually tell the patients that if the cavity is close to the nerve there is a chance that you might need a root canal after the filling. I do however think the second dentist that put the amalgam filling in was not making a wise decision. Metal fillings expand and contract with temperatures and that would just aggravate the nerve more, not to mention they crack the teeth over time. I understand you are upset that the filling failed, but you could have a root canal and a crown and wouldn't have to have the teeth removed. Sorry.   (+ info)

Can throat pain be associated with toothache?

oh and PS-- dentist took a new xray, i don't have an abscess.. said likely was pulpitis
Well I have had this nagging, mostly mild toothache since I had a huge cavity filled 6 months ago on the upper right..the molar that's connected to the maxillary sinus. Got better for a while, then lately worse again. But I laid down to go to sleep and got woke up by this unbearable right sided throat pain, over the tonsil and way on down the throat. I mean it doesn't hurt when I swallow at all, and my throat looks totally normal. But I can't see how this severe throat pain could be from the toothache, because the throat pain is way worse than the toothache ever was. But what else could it be, I mean it won't even let me sleep but my throat looks normal. If getting my tooth pulled would make this go away, man, so be it.
it's not the kind of throat pain that hurts when you swallow, it's just there

Antibiotics are not working, pain meds wnt take the pain away...whats WRONG with me?

I have been on 500mg, 4 times per day since Sunday. The doctor at the emergency rm said it was the strngest dose he could give me. When i went in, my tooth hurt sO bad! I was crying and almost passing out from the pain. I had taken 3 t3's, 4 advil and 2 regular tylenol within 3 hours and it didnt take ANY pain away. I eventually fell asleep from the meds im guessing.

I thought i would be ok, after that, once the meds started to work(amoxicillan) Two nights late I woke up in so much pain i cound t focus n anything. i was delerious. again, pain meds didnt take the pain away, just knocked me out.

the next night, again, and again last night. The only thing that works is the massive overdose, and I cant keep doing it. i have kids and an injured husband to take care of.

Tonight after I ate(chewed n the ther side) I started feeling short sharp electricstabbinh feelings going thrugh my tooth. ive been on the antibiotics for 7 days now, shouldnt it be working? or culd it be the tooth has been brken and poossibly abcessed since february.

could it be acute pulpitis? An abcess?

Im phoning the dentist in the AM if its the last thign i dp. i have an unrealistic fear f the dentis.
the tooth will be pulled, no doubt. its broken in half. also, n emergency dentist around here. i have t travel 50 min to get to the closest dentist.
----------

I would recommend you call immediately, as they have emergency number to call for after hours. You should have called by the 3rd day. It doesn't sound like it is working. You may need a root canal, or they should evaluate what is causing your pain. I pray the dentist gets rid of your pain and you have no infection.  (+ info)
