How long does it take for Pulpitis to go away?

Recently I went to the dentist after having a cavity filled and he told me I have pulpitis in my tooth. The pain is excrutiating, I mean it's almost as bad as labor. He gave me nothing for it. I've been taking Ibuprofin which doesn't seem to help. I've been drinking cold water and icing it which temprarily relieves the pain. But I think I have gone through 12 glasses today and I can't take anymore water. Does anyone know how to relieve the pain? Also, how long will it take for the pain to go away? My dentist said a month. I have been reading online that sometimes the pain doesn't go away? Please someone give me some hope. :(

It does not go away on its own you must do a root canal  (+ info)

Why is my tooth pain radiating to my ear?

There is no abscess present on my radiographs, so why is my horrible tooth pain on #18 radiating up to my ear? It feels as though someone is jabbing a pencil into my ear canal. We suspect pulpitis, but I can't find an endodontist to treat me this weekend because I am 29 weeks (7 months) pregnant. I am taking an antibiotic and pain reliever for now.
----------

Well just because the radiograph did not show a abscess does not mean that the tooth in not infected. It only means at this point it is not a large infection and that it did not show up on the radiograph but the nerve could be dead or worse in the process of dieing which it one of the most painful teeth to have and also the hardest to get numb to preform tx on. If you are in terrible pain or if there is an infection a dentist will tx then because that is not good for the baby. The antibiotic will help but may take 36-48 hours. Sipping on cold water will help.  (+ info)

What is pulpitis?

This means inflammation of the pulp inside the tooth. The pulp is part of the inside of the tooth that has tissue and nerves. It is the technical term for a toothache.  (+ info)

Irreversible pulpitis, how to ease pain?

I have had this major tooth ache since about Wednesday. I have tried a lot of things (Orajel, hot things etc.) and my pain killers aren't working today. I went to the dentist and i need a root canal, but that isn't until Thursday. He put me on Pennicilin to rid of the infection but it still hurts like crazy (I went yesterday morning). The only thing that helps is drinking cold water. Nothing warm, because its throbs like crazy. What can I do? I need to sleep but I can't drink water and try to sleep lol. It sometimes can go as bad as feeling pain in my ear. I am pretty sure I don't have an infection in the bone because the dentist said it's just irritating my nerve. Please help.
Also the pain is extreme and is always constant, that's why I am aksing
----------

There is nothing you can do. What the dentist should have done, was frozen you up, drilled into your tooth to access the root canal and then removed the nerve. That is the only thing that could have helped you here.
Putting you on Penicillin was a complete waste. You put a patient on penicillin once the nerve has already died, and a bacterial abscess has started to form. The penicillin gets rid of the pus that is causing the pressure that is causing the pain.
Because you have said that cold makes the tooth feel better, this is a classic symptom of an acute irreversible pulpitis. The nerve is still alive, but is throbbing sore. No antibiotic will help this, and painkillers will only do so much also. Removal of the pulp would stop the pain. Wait long enough and the nerve will die and so will the pain. But that is when an abscess can begin.
Good luck...hope the dentist can see you sooner.  (+ info)

Is Pulpitis dangerous?

Please help I am so stressed out with pain and worry at the moment. I have had a dull throbbing and really bad pain when I bite in one of my teeth. Last time this happened in another tooth I needed root canal .
Anyway its been like this for 2 days now my usual Dentist is off and the other one only prescribed Erythromycin and said make an appoint for next week. Erythromycin makes me sick. Will I be OK till Monday if I dont take the antibiotic or will it abscess and cause major problems.
Would an emergency dentist start the root treatment instead or should I just take ibuprofen and wait till mon. Any Dentists out there? Please advise.
----------

If you are able to get back to the dentist today then do so and get them to give you a different anitbiotic. This is probably what any emergency dentist would do today (saturday) .

unless it were very urgent, they wouldn't start the root filling. If it is very swollen, then they would just open up the tooth (and leave it open) and let any puss drain out, to take away the pressure of the infection building up.

If you are not able to get to the emergency dentist then i think you could chance it until Monday to start treatment or change you antibiiotic especially if buprofen is helping.

Pulpitis is only dangerous if the infection is left to an extent of it building up to a large abscess and the poison of the infection pumping around the blood stream. But it is very exceptional and i am sure yours is not to this level yet.

good luck for monday. x  (+ info)

i had a root canal done 11 days ago with irrev.pulpitis. i still have sensitivity and pain non-stop. normal?

i had one done 4 years ago and it was the same way...it still is very sensitive to touch (non-stop). That one now has a bone infection due to a gap under the crown that wasn't sealed properly. With the new root canal, the pain and sensitivity is the same, am i allergic to the endodontic cement ? (FYI - they are on different sides - so its not referred pain). I've been on 3 antibiotics in the last 3 weeks. I do not have latex allergy (similar to the ingredients in the cement), but highly sensitive to most drugs. I had xrays, no infection, no fracture, no swelling seen. Should i have him remove of the pulp to relieve the pain? what about the nerves still in the bone area...that he says are "frayed".?? 11 days pain post root canal on percocet 10mg q 4 hours...this has to stop! what's the answer? Pull the tooth? please help

# On the charting representation, note the left and right sides.

# Note in the midline.

# Number the teeth in the three systems as designated on the grid above and below the teeth.

Note: The Universal System and some classifications will be used in the charting exercise. Later questions will be asked about this charting but other numbering systems will be referred to. (Remember that neatness is important!)

Select the best answer to each question based on the charting in the figure below.

My pain started as soon as the numbing of my tooth filling started?

Some people here on yahoo told me I may have pulpitis, which I have now learned is a bacterial infection. Can I just be experiencing the normal pain of a tootache after a filling? It was a deep cavity, they did not hit the nerve, so they put a filling in. I cannot even go to work today, cuz it hurts so bad. Do I call my dentist and ask her to take the tooth out? I won't pay the money for a root canal, I'd rather they just pulled it. I am really at a loss of words and knowledge. I wish you could know how painful it is, not literally, I wish you no harm, to determine what I should do. My ear hurts, my jaw hurts, other teeth on the bottom hurt, my filling was on top. When I drink a glass of water, it really hurts. Can you give me advice where I don't need to have the tooth pulled, please??????
CORRECTION FOR QUESTION:
MY PAIN STARTED AS SOON AS THE NUMBING OF MY TOOTH WORE OFF. IMMEDIATELY.
----------

Alot of times it could be the site of injection or also since it was a deep filling your tooth just went through a lot of trauma and you may need a pain killer until it gets better. Also another factor could be that since you were numb when you left you may need to have your filling adjusted. This can cause a tremendous amount of pain. I would definantly call your dentist and explain your pain, you may not need it to be pulled but I would go back in.  (+ info)

Differentiating between tooth problem & heart attack?

Ok, it seems pretty obvious I have a tooth problem. Possibly pulpitis, which unfortunately does not always show up on xrays. The tooth is VERY sensitive to cold, and is really bothered when I go between hot & cold food & beverage. I can't find any relief. My dentist won't treat me cuz he sees no abscess and I'm in my third trimester of pregnancy. I'm starting to freak that "what if it's really my HEART?"

Is there any way to really know?
----------

Find a different dentist! i have never heard of anyong complaining of tooth pain dues to a heart issue....jaw pain yes, took pain and sensivity ..no!  (+ info)
