pregnancy-diabetics?

Well have a doubt, my wife is pregnant and during her pregnancy period she got diabetics, I am curious does she get diabetics after 5 or ten year, if yes what type of precaution ahe has to take in future?
----------

My wife had gestational diabetes when she was pregnant with two of our four kids. She is fine to this day - the diabetes was a temporary condition due to the pregnancy. If your wife can control the diabetes by diet and exercise that is the best way to go - if she has to take insulin to control it I think her risk of developing diabetes later in life will be greater.  (+ info)

Diabetics and Pregnancy? Looking for honest answers on your experience during pregnancy with this condition.?

I would like to hear from women who have gone through pregnancy with diabetes and their experiances, good and bad.
----------

I've been a Type 2 Diabetic for 11 years. I have an 8 year old and I am pregnant now.

My first pregnancy was very rough - so rough that we decided to put on hold any plans of siblings. I was put on bed rest at 20 weeks with pre-term labor. They took care of that problem easily but found my blood pressure and my blood sugars were much more stable when I was on bed rest so they kept me on bed rest for the rest of the pregnancy. I was on 3 types of insulin, 21 shots per day. I did okay controlling my highs but had a lot of lows in the middle of the night and eventually they put me on a 24 hour monitor.

After all that, I had a completely healthy child who weighed 7 lb. 6 oz. All the work was worth it but it took a lot of time and resources out of the family. I had to go on disability and I didn't get my job back (they had something reserved for me but my job had to be covered). My husband had to do all the cooking and cleaning, and we lost my income except for disability but it was nothing like what I'd been earning and we'd been counting on.

This baby was a bit of a surprise, but the real surprise is how smoothly it's going. I'm on Metformin this time and my blood sugars are so much more stable. I'm on less medication than I needed before getting pregnant. It's really gone amazingly well, without all the crazy lows and struggles to keep my blood sugar from spiking. I don't know how much you can chalk up to pregnancy hormones and how much to medication - each pregnancy is different. In my case it is turning out to be VERY different. Thank goodness!

Hope that helps.  (+ info)

Have any diabetics been induced with their pregnancy?

They caught my diabetes at 19 weeks. They have done nothing to monitor really.(27 weeks now) I have a dietician but their not much help. Im watching my diet on my own cause im not depending on these crazy doctors! So far, so good. Here and there it will jump over 200 but i mainly keep it down. So i have only had 1 ultrasound and my question is did your doctor induce you early? How many weeks were you?how much did baby weigh? How did your baby do? I asked my doctor if we can make baby come at 38 weeks and he said NO, thats too dangerous and baby could be very sick. He said that most likely i will need a c-section( he has not even been keeping track of babies weight) I think he is c- section happy! I never had one and only want one in case of emergency! I had diabetes with my last but she came on her own 36 and she was fine, he says that she was just a lucky baby.

Its too late for me to change doctors...
----------

No, it's not too late to change doctors! And i would do it if I were you!

A baby is considered full term at 37 weeks, so your doctor is WRONG saying that 38 weeks is too early for an induction. What an idiot.

A c/s is not NECESARY just because you have GDM. In fact, the best way to handle the situation is for you to have a scan every four weeks from 28-30 weeks to measure the size of the baby. If it appears to be getting 'too big' THEN they should induce you early. It's much safer than a c/s.

I have been on insulin since i was 24 weeks pregnant. I see my Obgyn every two weeks, my gestational diabetes specialist every two weeks, and i have had scans at 28 weeks and 32 weeks with another one scheduled for 34 weeks. I have to test my blood four times a day to make sure it's at the right levels. At my 32 week scan, the baby was exactly average for size. So i am doing very well with managing my diabetes. I learned the diet stuff very easily, so i don't have to go to the dietitian anymore.

There is NO WAY i would opt for a c/s straight away.

At the hospital where i will be having the baby, the midwife said that the doctor is more likely to induce early than wait till full term and do a c/s. And that's ONLY if the baby is getting too big.

You need to insist on having sizing scans done. And do not consent to a c/s unless they can show you that your baby is too big. Don't let him guesstimate about this!  (+ info)
