What usually happens at a postpartum checkup?

I have my postpartum checkup in 3 weeks, and I was just curious what usually happens at the checkup. Do they do a pap smear? Take your blood? What usually happens?

Thank you!
----------

The doctor will push on your tummy to make sure your cervix is where its supposed to be. He/She will check your breasts to make sure they are working correctly or drying up depending on how you are feeding. And yes he/she will look up there to make sure everything is healing properly. The doctor will also ask how you are feeling just to make sure you don't have postpartum depression. And if you do its nothing that can't be fixed!! Best of luck and CONGRATS on the baby!!!  (+ info)

What are the signs of postpartum depression?

i already suffer from depression. is postpartum depression the same? are there different signs? is there a way to overcome it without medication? i'm afraid because i have 3 children, and their fathers are no where around (2 have the same father). my youngest is 3 weeks. i just don't want to get frustrated and take it out on my 2 older kids.
----------

If you have postpartum depression, you have had five or more depressive symptoms (including one of the first two listed below) for most of the past 2 weeks, including:1

* Depressed mood-tearfulness, hopelessness, and feeling empty inside, with or without severe anxiety.
* Loss of pleasure in either all or almost all of your daily activities.
* Appetite and weight change-usually a drop in appetite and weight, but sometimes the opposite.
* Sleep problems-usually trouble with sleeping, even when your baby is sleeping.
* Noticeable change in how you walk and talk-usually restlessness, but sometimes sluggishness.
* Extreme fatigue or loss of energy.
* Feelings of worthlessness or guilt, with no reasonable cause.
* Difficulty concentrating and making decisions.
* Thoughts about death or suicide. Some women with PPD have fleeting, frightening thoughts of harming their babies: these thoughts tend to be fearful thoughts, rather than urges to harm.  (+ info)

How do you deal with Postpartum depression?

my baby is 5 weeks old and i think i have postpartum depression... i am sad alot.. they say if you have been depressed before and if you are young you are more likely to get it... i have been depressed because 2 years ago when i was 15 my mom was murdered and i am a young mom.. i am now 17? can anybody help?
----------

I'm sorry to hear about your mom, that is enough to upset anyone's emotions. Now being a young mother won't help. But baby blues are common, very common! but if it persists much longer tell your dr and they can discuss it with you..just know it's not unusual and they won't think you are nuts. IF you start feeling like the baby makes you angry when crying, or you feel anger or resentment or want to hurt the baby or yourself or others.., call a ppd crisis line and your dr the next morning etc...becasue that is serious depression and could be a bigger issue. other than that...just relax. thing swill be fine, it's ok to feel down. try to take some time to youself during her naps and if you get upset, put her in her crip and go take a braether..it's hard, but there is help if you get worse.  (+ info)

Are postpartum periods suppost to be irregular or pretty timely?

I received my first postpartum period on May 29, 2009. I am wondering when should I expected my next period. I am already a week late. Is it normal to have an irregular period after having a baby?
----------

They can be pretty irregular. I had my third son a year ago (today-happy b-day to my little guy) and had my first period after having him on May 7th. It was so heavy that I could not leave the house! It was horrible. Then I had one on June 6th, only it was so so light that I actually thought I might be pregnant again (I always have a light period when I first get pregnant)... but it went by and I wasn't pregnant... then I got really moody and my hubby said "oh your getting ready to start, I can tell", I told him that not every bad mood could be blamed on Aunt Flow, lol... that maybe it was HE that was making me grumpy... but sure enough! On June 23rd!!! My periods have always been four and a half weeks apart! So, I called my obgyn and they said that this was typical and that they will regulate in time. This didn't happen with my first two, but I didn't breast feed them so I never really missed a beat with a period after having them.
ARGH, lol.... so I guess we just need to be patient and it will level out. :)  (+ info)

How do I know if I have PostPartum Depression and how can I get help?

i am a mother to a beautiful 3mth old babygirl. I had depression before i had her and now i think i have postpartum.
----------

my regular family doctor diagnosed mine... if you have a regular doctor, they can tell if you are not yourself... if you dont have a regular doc, ask your ob or see about a free/reduced fee mental health clinic in your area... they have a test to check for depression and as long as you give honest answers it will diagnose it... sometimes it takes some time to find a medication that works to treat it though, so try to have some patience .... but that said, if you ever feel bad enough that you want to hurt or abandon your child, get a friend, a family member, anyone to come watch your child until you can get to feeling better... if you dont have someone to help you and you start to get frustrated - walk outside... some people might get upset by this, but if your child is screaming and you have changed her and fed her and you feel ready to explode, just walk away - put her in the crib and walk outside until you can get in a better place... yes people, its not the best solution, but if you have severe post partum and no help and no one will come watch your child, it is better to walk away outside for a few than to lose your temper and patience with a baby... alot of times i would have to just walk outside for 20 min and scream and cry and then go back in and try to take care of the kiddo... maybe alot of people dont need that and they will want to tell you all the b.s. about "mistreating a precious gift and you should be grateful you have one, ect ect " and that is all well and good if you dont have post partum depression.... and great for them... but if you have it, you have to do what you have to do to keep your child safe and you sane enough to get help  (+ info)

How long after a woman has a baby could depression be considered post postpartum depression?

If I had a baby seven months ago, but just recently became extremely depressed could this be consider postpartum depression? I'm bi-polar and back on my medication for it but my medication treats my mood swings, not my depression. Any advice is much appreciated thank you.

What to do when you think you have postpartum depression & your doctors away?

I seriously think I have postpartum depression and it's getting really worse. It's getting to the point where I'm scared because a couple years ago I had a problem with drugs and alcohol to cope with my stress and depression so I really need to talk to doctor about it but my doctor is away this week and some of next week. I'm finding it extremely hard to cope and don't know what to do! What can I do? Is there anyone else I can get help from?
----------

ANY doctor can help you, not just your ob/gyn. You could call the OB's office and tell the nurse what is going on. My doctor had a standing order that any woman that called and said she thought she had PPD was to be prescribed a certain medication starting at a certain dosage, so if he was out of the office, it was still handled. Usually any time a doctor goes out of town or takes time off has another doctor on call for them, so you may be able to call and who ever is on call for your doctor could handle it.

If that does not work then go to acute care, the ER, a general physician, anyone. Get help now. Don't wait.  (+ info)

Is it possible for a mother to have postpartum depression beyond the childs infancy?

I have a friend who is 21 and she has a very jacked up relationship with her mother. Her mom has a very serious complex about herself and she wants to always be viewed as the nice 1 and the 1 thats most important and she has been this way sine her daughter was born. Is it possible for her to be still suffering from some sorta postpartum depression or is she just crazy?
----------

The mother is self-centered and most likely depressed and suffering from low self-esteem, but not postpartum. She would probably benefit from some kind of therapy and a drug to even out her emotions.  (+ info)
