How and why does ice help nausea and vomiting?

Nauseated and vomiting after surgery and extremely cold drinks/ice helps it to pass, and I was wondering why and how this is true. Many medications haven't helped at all.
----------

Ice does NOT help everybody, in each different degree of deterioration/circumstance. In quite a number of cases, though, ice does give an overall "numbing effect" to most "actions and reactions" that take place, in living biological organisms/cells.  (+ info)

How can I relieve symptoms of moderate to severe nausea and vomiting? Do I need to see a doctor?

My girlfriend has been vomiting since 10:30 this morning. We both ate the same piece of fruit for breakfast and I'm fine. We ate different dinners though that was 11:00 last night. She feels dizzy and a little feverish. Can you give us some advice to relieve symptoms or help her get better? Thank you.
----------

flu? head cold? knocked up? try a bland diet for the next several days or see a doctor
the diet would be dry plain toast white or brown rice and maybe a little (and I do mean little) fried ground up beef. and tons of water.  (+ info)

Is there a way to prevent nausea and vomiting when starting the pill?

I started with microgynon 30. I took it in the evening at 6 o clock (a time I'm likely to remember) but had extreme nausea at about 4am, finally vomitting at 5am. Would switching to taking it in the morning change this?
----------

Nausea and vomiting are really quite rare side effects of microgynon. If they persist it is definitely not the drug for you.  (+ info)

Is it common to have nausea and vomiting with headaches?

I always become nauseated and end up vomiting whenever I have a headache.

This leads to me being unable to take any pain relievers for my head and I'll often end up sick for hours and hours.

Is this normal?
In addition: This happens to me about once a month.
----------

Quite a few people experience nausea and vomiting when they deal with Migraine headaches. There are things you can keep on hand to help when a bad headache pops up.
You can keep a supply of migraine treatment meds on hand. See a doctor to find out what works best for you. There is an injection you can use just as the headache starts that will often break the cycle and stop the worst of the pain. I keep an anti-nausea medicine in suppository form, in my refrigerator. In that form you don't have to worry about tossing them back up.
Just keeping these things close stops most of my headaches before they incapacitate me.
Good luck.  (+ info)

Why would they give an 83 yr old woman with complaints of nausea & vomiting these meds?

She hasnt felt well for several days. Weak, tired, slight fever, nausea, vomiting. I was thinking they would give her something such as phenagren (sp?). They gave her chlodiazepoxide-clidiniu & pantoprazole-sod. From what I can see, those are drugs for peptic ulcers. They arent helping the nausea or vomiting.
----------

they gave me phenagren to help with nausea and vomiting, trust me I have been on it for 9 months and it does wonders.  (+ info)

Why am I vomiting every day & feeling nausea with stomach pain?

For several months I have vomited several days, felt sick and had stomach pains. On a few occasions I have vomited blood. I have been prescribed stemetil by my gp but am still vomiting. I have had an ultra sound scan and endoscopy and full blood count and everything has come back normal. What is wrong with me and are there any other tests that can identify the cause?
----------

I don't know if they have checked your blood Vitamin B12 levels, a friend went through all sorts of tests before they found the source of the problem. A few injections later and she is feeling much better.

It might also be worth getting your blood calcium measured (usually only comes as a 'bone screen' which is why doctors don't think of it), I had high blood calcium and had months of nausea, vomiting and everything I ate tasting foul before they found that one.

I don't know if these are the answer but you can check out all sorts of things on this site
www.patient.co.uk/patientplus.asp

I was given a print out from one of the doctors when I went in to have my high calcium investigated so it is solid information. I had months of 'normal' results, endoscopy etc as well.  (+ info)

how far into pregnancy does the nausea and vomiting end?

im 2 months pregnant, the nausea and vomiting is killing me,i feel horrible, how far along into pregnancy does it stop?
----------

First of all CONGRATS!!! Remember this is what you wanted lol... that is what I told myself leaning over the toilet all that time.

All of us are different. I have friends that never had morning sickness (yeah pretty much hate them lol just kidding).

Usually it goes away sometime in the second trimester. For me, the first one mine went away right at the 14 week mark and the next went away about week 16. I willed myself not to throw up this time which l think was actually worse. Ginger tea worked well for me along with other things.
I'm sure everyone has given you advise on that ;)

You have a ways to go unfortunately but remember, it's for a good cause and not just a flu:)

Here is a great website to check out. I really liked checking out each week to see what was going on with my baby and what sized fruit she would be compared to lol. Also it helps to let you know what to expect with your own body and that it's normal.

Why does intense physical pain cause nausea and vomiting?

If say you've just got a really bad migrane, there's nothing else wrong with you, no bugs or infections etc but you end up vomiting because you're in so much pain. What causes this?
----------

Vomiting is a primal reflex meant to get rid of toxins. Certain poisons may cause symptoms similar to having a migraine, so the body reacts with nausea. Same thing happens when you are dizzied or have stomach pain (e.g. from being punched in the gut).

The primality is also seen when someone becomes nauseous by seeing someone else vomit—until recently in human history, people tended to eat together, so this was a protective reaction to keep others from getting as sick as someone who was visibly poisoned.  (+ info)

What could cause nausea (no vomiting) a for a week besides pregnancy?

I don't think I am pregnant & nausea is not a pre-menstrual symptom for me. I have been having this queasiness for going on a week & my period is due in 4 days... Please help.
----------

Being dehydrated can cause nausea. There could be food allergens too. And your hormones may just be a little off.  (+ info)
