I suffered a mild head concussion in a recent major automobile accident. Do I risk post-concussion syndrome?

The accident was major because it caused very severe damage to the car and resulted in a 4-car accident. I want to get a feel for what my risk level for post-concussion syndrome is? And what I should do about it?
----------

Post concussion syndrome are the symptoms you feel after a concussion: dizziness, nausea, difficulty w/ concentration, etc. Which is totally normal, what you have to do is make sure you aren't doing anything like exercise or impact type activities to make them worse or to make them stick around. What you really have to worry about is second impact syndrome, which can be very dangerous. It's a very rapid and dangerous swelling of the brain which happens when you sustain another head injury after the initial concussion. Most of the time the "second impact" is mild compared to the first  (+ info)

If a CT scan results show a negative can a post concussion syndrome be claimed?

A friend is being sued when a careless person towards a backing forklift and a bolt of fabric fell on him causing a laceration on his forehead. After denying back and neck pain and showing full fuction of all his limbs and the CT scan came out negative, the day of the incident, he is claiming a list of injuries that do not follow his original claim in the medical report. Such as loss of consiousness when that was denied at the scene, and sexual disfunction due to traumatic brain injuries, with a new claim of post concussion syndrome, which when looked up, IS a concussion, which, wouldn't it have been picked up by the CT scan?
he was cleared in the ER, negative in everything, so wouldn't that mean it didn't show up in the emergency room, so it wasn't serious?
----------

Any time you have a head injury which causes the brain to "slosh" up against the skull, you are "concussing" the brain. A CT may not show anything if it is mild and no bleeding has occurred. The symptoms he is describing would seem to indicate quite a serious injury that would have been picked up on in the Emergency Department  (+ info)

I have post concussion syndrome, what does this mean?

So does this mean I have a mild concussion?
----------

Post-concussion syndrome, also known as postconcussive syndrome or PCS, and historically called shell shock, is a set of symptoms that a person may experience for WEEKS, MONTHS, or occasionally years after a concussion–a mild form of traumatic brain injury (abbreviated TBI).

Post-Concussion syndrome is an unusual syndrome that affects about 15% of people who get a concussion. A concussion is caused by MILD brain injury usually as a result of a blow to the head. When a concussion is MILD; most people recover from major symptoms, like nausea, dizziness and headache within a week to two weeks.

What puzzles medical researchers is that some people continue to have symptoms or develop post-concussion syndrome, and that these symptoms can last for weeks after healing has occurred. In rare cases, symptoms can persist for a year or more after a person has suffered a concussion.

Therefore, mild concussion is mild traumatic brain injury.
Those who sufffer a mild concussion recover within a WEEK or two weeks. . However, PCS can last for weeks; months or longer. So the diffference between the two is the DURATION.for the symptoms to go away. . .  (+ info)

Have any of you suffered through post concussion syndrome?

And how long did it last and what were your problems? I had two bowling pins fall on my head at home on May 3rd. I have the CT scan (negative), went to the er and to a neurologist. I have terrible headaches and nausea. Not too mention whiplash on my neck from me throwing my head back when it happened and dizziness also from the crystals in my ear getting out of whack per the neurologist (its like an inner ear infection). I just want it to all go away!!!
----------

I created this account on the sole reason of reading your question.

The problem you are having may not be related to the post concussive syndrome.... but just the concussion instead...

If the neurologist noted there is calcium crystals loose in your ear, then you need to find someone who can position your head correctly to get them back in the original chamber.

You'll be pleased to hear that there is a solution,

The crystals used to be attached to small hairs, unfortunately after your accident some of them may have been dislodged and fallen into some of the semi-circular canals in your ear which are used for balance/orientation. The stimulation from those crystals are soo strong and soo obscene from moving the fluids in your semi-circular canals, that your eyes probably move accordingly. (when you lie down?)

Find a neurologist or chiropractic neurologist who isnt afraid to reposition your head to get those crystals back into the coch-sac area...

If the dr. can not figure out if the crystals are in the Lateral or Posterior semicircular canal.. give him/her a hint and tell him to watch your eyemovements when you lie down...

It wont be fun repositioning those crystals during the procedure, but it will get better after...

Also, I am not a doctor and do not have any medical training.

good luck.  (+ info)

I was diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome, What does that mean?

It means that you are having different symptoms like maybe headaches, dizziness, depression, anxiety, loss of concentration to name a few that the doc's can't find an explanation of why they are occurring.  (+ info)

can anyone tell me if post concussion syndrome can cause panic attacks?

----------

After doing our own research, I believe my son is PCS. He has all the classic symptoms, but has never lost consciousness at brief periods of time. Do you have other resources to suggest for us to get information. I am wondering how many teenage athletes has this??  (+ info)

Question about post concussion syndrome, neck strain, headaches?

About 2 1/2 weeks ago I was at work and bent over to pick something up and on my way up I hit my head fairly hard on an x-ray unit. I didn't feel well a few days after but my headache went away. About five days ago I felt worse and have a neck strain too. When I am in bed trying to fall asleep at times I jump up because it feels like I'm losing my breath for some reason. I went to the doc today and he thinks I may have post concussion syndrome. He prescribed me some darvon and I took one and now my forehead/head feel like they are asleep. They scheduled me for a head CT scan for next week Thur to see if I have bleeding or any severe problems (he thinks I should be fine) but I don't know if I want to wait that long since I don't feel well at all. My question is for anyone who has ever had post concussion syndrome are these symptoms supposed to be severe like they are for me? Or is this not normal?
----------

Post-concussion syndrome, also known as postconcussive syndrome or PCS, is a set of symptoms that a person may experience for weeks, months, or even years after a concussion, a mild form of traumatic brain injury. As many as 50% of patients who have experienced concussion have PCS, and some sources say as many as 90% of patients experience postconcussion symptos. Some doctors consider patients who have symptoms resulting from concussion for more than three months after the injury to have PCS, while others diagnose patients with symptoms starting within a week of trauma with PCS.In late, or persistent PCS, symptoms last for over six months.

It is not known what causes PCS symptoms to occur and persist or why some patients who suffer a mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) develop PCS while others do not. It is commonly believed that physiological and psychological factors before, during, and after the injury all take part in the development of PCS.

What You are experiencing is normal. I'm sure it's a nightmare for you. You just have to go through all the testing and let the doctor figure out the best treatment for you.  (+ info)
