hum... my friend told me about it. he said that people that suffer from porphyria lost blood and very sensitive to sunlight; and early peopel who suffer from porphyria drink blood because there is no cure...
he also said that it's the origin of vampire and werewolf.....

i don't know, but i suppose that there is no magic in science, so i just want to know how you people think, or i mean tell me more about this porphyria.

Hi there my story is very long to tell, with all this stupid game with health care system in the USA, it's a joke. I am 36 yrs old and due to a blood transfusion when I was born, I was infected with the HCV virus, since the age of 3 a develop Porphyria cutanea tarda, a skin disorder which any time I am exposed to the sun light, I develop a lot of painfull blisters on my skin etc, I read this is because of the HCV. Any how I don't have money for a biopsy which I badly need, and my question is that the sonogram shows my liver ok, and with the blood test I don't show cholesterol or anything abnormal, but the quantitive test show very high virus close to 6000000, is it possible my liver is fine or only biopsy will show? can you explain to me more please? Thank you

Wow. I think it's time to see if you qualify for a study trial! Usually medicaid will pick up the expenses, but in the meantime a study trial will allow you to be on treatment at no cost. 6 million is high.
Its a shame you have suffered with the PCT for so long....It's also a shame no one has suggested that you do treatment ...there is a good chance that your skin issue would resolve post antiviral chemotherapy.
PCT is caused by a damaged liver. And, many have normal enzymes and have liver damage. The alt and ast waxes and wanes all throughout the chronicity of the hcv virus. Many even have normal enzymes and still have some sort of damage.

A biopsy is the only way to tell how well the liver is doing. PCT is a huge symptom of HCV (as well as other types of rashes).

I'd ask the doctor about a study trial. You can also start by talking with your local Department of Health to see if you qualify for either reduced or free insurance. Most states have medicaid, medical or other and if you make too much money they usually have a program in which you can pay for insurance. If your a single mother you should also qualify for medicaid.   (+ info)

ohjoy - CP is an important medical condition because porphyria attacks can be very serious. Prevention and early management of attacks is the main goal. With a sensible approach and good medical supervision a person can have a normal lifespan and normal quality of life.

Symptoms
There are various symptoms which a person can experience during an attack of porphyria however most involve the nervous system and skin. Attacks are rare before puberty and uncommon after menopause. The majority of attacks can be traced to a precipitating factor.
The most common symptoms during an attack of acute porphyria are:
1. stomach/abdominal pain (90% of patients)
2. dark urine (74%)
3. pains, numbness or tingling of arms and legs (40-50%)
4. constipation (48%)
5. nausea/vomiting (43%)
6. hallucinations or mood swings (40%)
Others are weakness in arms or legs, loss of feeling in hands and feet, seizures or fits, fevers or chest pain. For most people, mild symptoms are more frequent than acute attacks.

I was just diagnosed with porphyria,after 3 yrs. of suffering. The doctor said there is nothing they can do for me, as it is inherited and in my genes. I suffer terribley with pain. I weigh 77lbs. now and am 5'5". There must be some kind of relief for me! I pray someone out there can give me advice. Thank you
I don't have porphyria, but I am sorry you haven't gotten much help so far. At least you have a diagnosis, though. That is a start. It seems that the porphyrias are such rare conditions that most doctors are not very familiar with them. You might be better off finding a specialist with experience with porphyria, because it seems (from the first 2 sources below) that there are treatments. You might also check into support groups for people with porphyria (the last 2 sources below) -- they probably have a lot of good advice as well. Finally a doctor told him what it is and gave him some cream that helped. He said there are only 1-100,000...so they don't know much about it. He is wearing everything he can to stay out of the sun, but has long blisters on his hands, arms and one on his ear. Back when he first started he had diarrhea very bad for days and lost 5 lbs.
