How can you die suddenly from acute alcohol hepatitis?

I had a friend that fell into a coma and passed away some years ago. Her family didn't tell me the true reason for her death. I found out she had acute alcohol hepatitis. I've researched this but I'm confused on how this condition can suddenly kill you even if you have stopped intoxicating yourself?
----------

You got a simple but accurate answer already. I have HCV, hep c. It's in chronic form and I'm a non responder to current therapy. If I don't take care of my liver it may develop an acute form of HCV, which means it would destroy my liver, right through cirrhosis to end stage liver disease (ESLD). The liver filters out many toxins, lots of which have the ability to kill if not removed from the body. Alcohol induced hepatitis in the acute form does the same thing, and usually in less time. Alcohol isn't the only toxin removed by the liver, and like I said, many of them can kill.  (+ info)

how long does it take for acute keratitis to heal?

I have acute keratitis in both of my eyes, which is caused by my contact lenses and there ARE ulcers on my eye. My opthamologist prescribed some anti-biotic eyedrops and after a few days, she said I didn't need them anymore and prescribed artificial eyedrops. It's been a week and a half and she said that my cornea is looking better but not completely healed.

However, she did not tell me how long I would have to keep wearing glasses and using the artificial tears and when I can start wearing my contact lenses again. Can somebody tell me?
----------

Treatment depends on the cause of the keratitis

Infectious keratitis generally requires antibacterial, antifungal, or antiviral therapy is to treat the infection. This treatment can involve prescription eye drops, pills, or even intravenous therapy. Over-the-counter eye drops are typically not helpful in treating infections. In addition, contact lens wearers are typically advised to discontinue contact lens wear and discarding contaminated contact lenses and contact lens cases. Antibacterial solutions include Quixin (levofloxacin), Zymar (gatifloxacin), Vigamox (moxifloxacin), Ocuflox (ofloxacin — available generically). Steroid containing medications should not be used for bacterial infections, as they may exacerbate the disease and lead to severe corneal ulceration and corneal perforation. These include Maxitrol (neomycin+polymyxin+dexamethasone — available generically), as well as other steroid medications.. One should consult a qualified Ophthalmologist or Optometrist for treatment of an eye condition.

Some infections may scar the cornea to limit vision. Others may result in perforation of the cornea, (an infection inside the eye), or even loss of the eye. With proper medical attention, infections can usually be successfully treated without long-term visual loss.

I hope I helped!  (+ info)

How do you get rid of acute bronchitis?

I have had acute bronchitis for about four months and the doctor has given me a couple of different antibiotics. Has anyone had this and how did you get rid of it?
----------

Your Doctor sucks.

In the short term use something like Mucinex to mitigate the problem.

Ask for a short, about 4 day stint of steroids. That will bolster your ability to fight off the congestion. Well that's what My Doctor did and it worked. Anti-biotics are useless.  (+ info)

How long does it take for an acute sesamoid fracture to heal?

For the last 2 months I have had an acute fracture of my sesamoid bone. It is beginning to become very annoying as it limits me from participating in all of my sporting events. For half of the time its been broken, I continued to play football on it so the recovery time I've had has been more like a month. How much longer is this expected to go on and what are my options?
----------

Go and see a podiatrist when you get a chance. My recommendations for you is I treat these with a walking boot and a bone stimulator. These small bones are very difficult to heal and often take a long time to heal. A bone stimulator will help a lot and also getting fitted with an orthotic to off-weight the area also helps. Most of these people get better in 6-8 wks. It does take a long time, but you'll get better. Hope this helps!  (+ info)

What is the acute HIV blood test you get after the rapid test?

Hello, here in NYC at the STD clinic you get the HIV rapid test to test for HIV antibodies. This happens 1 to 3 months. The result is ready in about 20 minutes.

After that I gave blood and this was the acute HIV test. They said to call back the lab in a week for it. What is the difference between the two tests.
----------

The rapid test is a preliminary exam that is often associated with false positives and false negatives. The blood test is more reliable. Basically, both tests can detect HIV, the blood test is more reliable since it looks for the virus in your bloodstream.  (+ info)
