Why do i keep getting pleurisy?

I first got pleurisy (sounds like pluracy) when i was 18, i had open heart surgery as a small child, 13 months old, but it has never caused any other problems, and i dont think that is the cause. Since the first time i got it, i have had it at least once a year, usually in the fall. I am now 23 and live a pretty healthy life but i cant understand why this keeps happening. Thanks for any help

Open heart surgery is a possible cause since scarring from the surgery could possibly create enough friction to irritate the lining, but many times, the cause is unknown. You could see about getting a CAT scan that might show what's causing the problem. A doc could also perform a thoracoscopy, and remove any tissue build up if that appears to be the cause.  (+ info)

why does Pleurisy affect the shoulder?

How come whenever someone has Pleurisy, they often have pain in their shoulder blades?
----------

It is radiated to that side. Doesn't occur at that site, but is felt there. Be aware that your lungs are also located near your shoulders. Check an anatomy site for "hilar lobes of lung"  (+ info)

How long will it take me to recover from bacterial pneumonia with pleurisy?

I was first diagnosed by my PCM as having pulled a muscle. The next day I went to the ER cause I was in so much pain and couldn't breathe right (sat.night). I am very uncomfortable and in a lot of pain. The ER Dr. put my on Azithromycin with a pain killer. How long will it take me to recover from this? This is horrible!!! (I am 29 and healthy(besides this!)).
----------

Very painful, so sorry. Everyone heals on their own time frame. Perhaps some days to weeks as long as the pleural infection and pneumonia respond to the antibiotic.  (+ info)

I have pleurisy and started my anti biotics a day ago. how long before the pain and infection starts to go ?

I am a 46 year old bloke and a moderate smoker.
----------

It depends on what caused the pleurisy in the first place and how long you had it before it was diagnosed. You should start to feel a lot better within about 4 days, but if you're still smoking, it may take a little longer. Everytime your inhale the smoke, you're irritating your lungs again.... so I know it's hard, but try to at least cut back until the antibiotics have a chance to start working.

Expected Duration

How long pleurisy lasts depends on its cause. For example, pleurisy caused by pleurodynia may come and go over a few days. In rare cases, a person with pleurodynia may have several episodes of pleuritic chest pain over several weeks before the illness finally goes away. In patients with bacterial pneumonia or rheumatic fever, pleurisy typically goes away when the infection is cured with antibiotics. In patients with lung cancer or connective tissue disease, the chest pain of pleurisy may persist for longer periods.

I hope this helps.... and that you feel better soon.  (+ info)

How long does it take to cure pleurisy?

Pleurisy is an inflammation of the lining of the lung/lungs. Many things depend on the cure and it's duration like your age and gender, how bad it is, what type of infection it is and the cause, etc. The problem in health is that everything isn't just an open and closed door. You need to plug all the data and info in to get any type of feasible answer and go from there. The most common forms are treated with amoxicillin and ibuprofen and lasts about 2 weeks. Taking it from there the treatments and medications go to Indocin and other more potent forms of antibiotics along with stronger drugs for pain. These come along with life changing alterations too. To help alleviate the pain try laying on the side effected. This might sound crazy, but it helps. Sometimes chest tubes are placed in the lung and set to drain the infection out of the pleural lining too. You need to be seen by a Pulminologist ( lung doctor ) asap. These specialists will do everything needed to get you back up and feeling healthy again. Good luck and God Bless  (+ info)

What is the difference between pleurisy & costoconditis?

Pleurisy is the inflammation of the pleura - the lining around the lung (between the lungs and ribs) to reduce friction associated with the movement of lungs inflating/deflating. This is usually an acute condition associated with a virus.

Costochondritis is the inflammation of the joint where the cartilage (between the ribs and the sternum) attaches to bone. This often can be a chronic condition similiar to arthritis.  (+ info)

Know anything about Pleurisy and other causes of resperatory issues?

OKay, so in november I ended up in the Emergancy room because i was having a lot of chest pain/difficulty breathing, I was told that i had a bad chest infection, was givin a z-pack and sent home, a week later exactly 7 days to be exact, i was back again, only this time it was worse, I couldnt say more than 4 words without being completly out of breath, Never had any breathing reperatory issues other than a dry cough that refuses to go away. They then told me i had pleurisy. Well In Febuary I started having breathing problems again, and very very very high heart rates and blood pressure, like heart rates of 160+ Im 22. I have been given echocardiograms, ekgs, numerous chest x-rays 3 mris, and 2 catscans, everything comes back perfectly normal except my white blood count is around 11. Nothing they give me will make the "infection" go away or the problems stop. ANyone have any idea what it could possibly be?

I have been diagnosed with pleurisy. What can I do to help my health along?

I am aware of the obvious factors, such as no smoking (help!) and I beleive diary products can 'bung up' my chest, but is there anything else I can do to help my respiritory system recover and stop all this darned coughing! I have been a smoker for over 25 years but have stopped now. I have also cut down on diary products. What else can I do as my G.P. is worse than useless!
I am vegetarian and live on the south coast of England.
Thank You....x
I am also a single mum to five year old...resting is not easy!

You poor thing- thats awful i have had that and my daughter used to suffer from it regularly. Lots and lots of rest highly recommended. Coughing up anything on your chest is very good- painful but essential and then just use a cough soother like honey and gylcerine (beware that some bronchial mixes actually cause you to cough!). You can take pain killlers- your doctor could prescribe codeine phosphate- they are excellent but only available on prescription. I used to hold a heat pad to my back and under my ribs to ease the discomfort too. But bed rest really is essential.  (+ info)

Has anyone been diagnosed with Pleurisy?

I have been diagnosed with Pleurisy after a 2 week battle with an upper respiratory infection. I have a fever of about 100 and I just generally don't feel well. I have aches, pains and chills like that that are associated with the flu. Does that come along with it?

Also, Naproxen 500mg was prescribed to me. What kind of side effects does it have? Thanks!
