Prolonged Pityriasis Rosea. . .What Should I Do?

I was diagnosed with P. rosea in July 2006. While the rash spread to my entire body (including my neck, face, hairline, ears, feet legs, torso, back) it finally started to subside around Thanksgiving. However, I keep getting new breakouts of the small scaly patches, just not all over. I have a new rash on my face. Its been almost 9 months. Has this happened to anyone? Do you have any information that will help me? All the websites say the same thing and obviously, my case is different than the typical one.
----------

Well, you never said what kind of treatment you have tried.
True, it is only supposed to breakout once or twice and then never come back, so my question is, have you been tested for Syphilis?
Once you test negative, you can ask your Doc to try some steroid creams. For now, some diaper rash ointment (at night) can be helpfull and soothing. It has zinc in it, great for your skin. It's the same thing that the sun bathers use on their nose.
last, maybe you were misdiagnosed, since it keeps coming back.
I would get a 2nd opinion..good luck, I know how devastating this can be, because it's something everyone can see...  (+ info)

Pityriasis Rosea and Valtrex?

I just learned I have pityriasis rosea and my doctor prescribed valtrex for me. Has anyone else taken valtrex for this? If so, how did it work out?
----------

That's interesting. I was just diagnosed with pityriasis rosea and have spent a number of hours reading different articles about it and have not seen one mention of Valtrex as a treatment option.

I am not a doctor, or in any way a medical expert, but from what I understand Valtrex is a drug used to treat some symptoms of certain herpes strains (seems mainly genital herpes, shingles, and labialis) and although there is no known cause for pityriasis rosea a lot of articles mention a possible tie to HHV-6 and HH-7 (Human Herpes Virus 6/7). I'm not sure if your doc knows something the rest of the online publications out there don't or if he is just trying to be a little more radical in his treatment plan but it sounds like he's convinced that there's a connection.

If it were me I would be a little concerned and want to know more specifics directly from him/her as to why they prescribed it, just to make sure I wasn't taking a prescription drug based on their personal "hunch".

Hope that helps ...

I've just been diagnosed with Pityriasis Rosea (Christmas Tree Rash), is it contagious?

I went to the urgent care clinic this weekend for some pink spots that have been appearing on my torso, neck, and back. The doctor said it wasn't contagious but I'm reading up on it, and most sources (I will not look at WebMD anymore for this reason "It usually occurs in children, pregnant women, and blacks"...See my point) and some say that it is contagious and others say it is not. My question is: is it contagious and how long will this take to go away?
----------

I had it before No it's not Contagious at all and it will fade away within 2 weeks max with or without meds don't worry hon :)  (+ info)

Is there treatment for Pityriasis Rosea?

I am a 41 year old female just diagnosed with this ailment and other than allergy meds to help with the itch doctor says it just has to run its course 8-10 weeks The itching is driving me absolutely crazy!
----------

Pityriasis Rosea Treatment
Mild cases of pityriasis rosea may go away by itself and may not require any treatment.

There is no direct treatment for this condition - however, corticosteroid creams may be prescribed to help relieve the itching. It is thought that exposure to ultraviolet light - usually done at the doctor's office - can shorten the duration of the condition and help healing.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Treatment
In most cases, pityriasis rosea goes away in four to eight weeks. Treatment usually focuses on controlling itching. The antiviral drugs acyclovir and famciclovir and the antibiotic erythromycin may reduce the duration of pityriasis rosea to one to two weeks. These medications often are not necessary, however, because itching is usually mild, and the condition clears up on its own.

If itching is a problem, your doctor may recommend the following to provide relief:

Steroid creams or ointments. These creams will help ease itching and decrease redness.
Oral antihistamines. These medications are available by prescription as cetirizine (Zyrtec) and fexofenadine (Allegra), and over-the-counter as diphenhydramine (Benadryl), chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton), clemastine (Tavist) and loratadine (Claritin).
Light therapy (phototherapy). This can be with ultraviolet B (UVB) light or sunlight. Talk to your doctor before using sunlight to treat your rash. UVB therapy is most often available at your doctor's office.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Self-care
These steps may help relieve the discomfort of pityriasis rosea:

Bathe and shower in lukewarm water.
Take an oatmeal bath. You can find oatmeal bath products at your pharmacy.
Use zinc oxide cream or calamine lotion on the rash.
Avoid strenuous physical activity if sweating makes the itching worse.

I ask what you would do if you had a terrible itch having pityriasis rosea.?

I was told to use cat pee and see a doctor.
THANKS FOR NOTHIING YAHOO.
This is covering my whole body and is driving me crazy. Is there any body out there in yahoo that has a brain????????????
Or is it the same old answers I have been looking at on yahoo and google the last couple of days?>>????????????????
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
----------

Calm down. I had pityriasis rosea, and I know how terrible it is. I used to get out of the shower and use a special cream all over my body. The doctor gave it to me. It was a pretty basic anti itch lotion, and it had a cooling effect that really made it less itchy. Also wearing light, soft clothing does wonders during the day. Hope it clears up soon! I feel your pain.  (+ info)

Does pityriasis rosea always spread dramatically? Or does it sometimes stay as a herald patch and a few bumps?

This spot is called the herald patch. The entire rash that will take place over your body in the next few months comes from this spot. Sometime between one and 30 days later, you'll notice a rash forming on the trunk of your body. This rash takes the initial form of a typical bumpy rash, then changes to larger, wrinkled, pinker spots. The rash usually follows the creases in your skin … under your arms, the crease in your neck, around your navel, on your ribs. The disease, and it's referred to as a disease because it's viral in nature, is truncated … meaning that it usually stays on your torso, down to the shirt sleeve line on your arms, and to the shorts line on your pants. It reacts differently to different people, of course, but it usually is a thick covering of your torso, front and back.  (+ info)

ok so i don't know if this will help you but my husband was diagnosed with that also. Before he deployed to iraq he was given a shot on his arm and right away he broke out with nasty rashes all over his body. We spent so many hours in the hospital just so they could give him medecine or something but we gave up, so my friend gave me a home remedie book and i found one for skin rashes it didn't exactly say for pityriasis rosea but i gave it a try. I went and bought 3 big cans of oatmeal, filled the tub w/ warm water, stirred it around for like 5 mins then i told him 2 get in there. He didn't want to but he did and he stayed there for about 40 mins and we did it again the next day for less mins. And all of the sudden his rashes started to dry up and peel off his skin...i was soo happy because my hubby was so deppressed cuz we could go out anywhere he was so embarrased cuz it was itchy and he couldn't stand it. sorry if this is too long jeje but u should try it i don't know how bad you have it but this is what helped my hubby and i hope it helps you 2 =) e-mail me if you need any more 411...good luck!  (+ info)

Does anyone know of any home treatment or remedies that help with pityriasis rosea? (mine doesn't itch)!?

I have pityriasis rosea but it doesn't itch unless I accidently scratch it, which I'm trying not to do. I know you're supposed to just let it go but I'm wondering if anyone knows of any products or home remedies that will help it go away or down faster.

do you think pityriasis rosea is caused by a chemical inside the water that has increased...?

during the spring and fall that skin may be allergic to?
----------

No, most doctors believe it is caused by a respiratory virus. You only contract pityriasis rosea once in your life, and not again. This is part of the reason why the medical community believes it is caused by a a single DNA-based virus (belonging to the herpes family, like chicken pox). It is not caused by any contaminants or toxins.  (+ info)
