Can you die from a pituitary adenoma?

If so what is the percentage? Can you tell if a pituitary micro-adenoma has turned into a macro-adenoma? Can you die from that too?
----------

A pituitary adenoma is a type of tumor of the pituitary gland. This gland is located basically in the middle of the head, just below the brain and above/between several large sinuses. Microadenomas are very common and generally harmless, and one study estimated that as many as 1/5 people have one when they die and have no noticeable problems as a result.

However sometimes the adenoma can cause problems; because of its size (it can compress the optic nerves or blood vessels) in which case a person might suffer progressive blindness or a stroke, or because it can secrete excess pituitary hormone. The hormone and resulting symptoms vary depending on the exact location and cell type, but for example it may release growth hormone or thyroid hormone. Like I said many people have a microadenoma and don't even know it, don't have any symptoms. But if begins to cause problems, there are multiple drugs and surgical procedures which can remove it.

With all of the available treatment options it's pretty rare to die from a micro- or even macroadenoma, but again it's something to keep in the back of your mind if you develop strange symptoms. These are too many and too various to go into here, and in any event is best done in person with your primary physician. However the most common one I will say is vision changes, usually a noticeable decrease in the peripheral vision of both eyes that results from the tumor growing and compressing the nerves responsible for sight. Hope this helps.  (+ info)

Can your pituitary gland cause flashes of light and spots in your vision?

I have persistant spots and flashes of light in my eyes, occuring every day all day long. I have been to the eye doctors and they found nothing. (Including neuro opthamologists)I was just reviewing my two MRI's and CT scan results which the doctors said showed nothing. The CT scan showed a plump pituitary gland according to the final report. Should I look further into this? I know the gland is right behind my eyes however my doctor neve mentioned it to me. Anyone with this same problem? I do not have migraines and am desperate to find a cure. I now think I just stumbled upon the problem. Thanks in advance for serious replys!

Well, hyperpituitarism has been known to cause vision problems, but usually (not always) it is partial blindness. But it is very likely that you may have found the problem.  (+ info)

Has anyone had glactorrhea or a pituitary glad disorder?

So i had a mammogram done today and an ultrasound to see why my right breast is leaking. They are now suspecting galactorrhea, but that is really hard to catch considering tests run on the pituitary gland can be easily misdiagnoised. Has anyone had glactorrhea or a pituitary glad disorder? If so how was it diagnoised and when was it diagnoised in relation to when you started showing symptoms?
If you could, please also describe your treatment.
Thanks! I am really worried.

What are the causes apart from Pituitary Adenoma for a non pregnant female to start lactating?

My daughter is 28yo and her youngest is 18mths. She finished breast feeding about 9mths ago and all of a sudden she has started lactating. She is not taking OCP. Any suggestions you medical gurus out there??
----------

I think a pit adenoma or cyst would be the biggest possibility. These are usually non-cancerous and treatable, but the worry is the damage being done to the pitutiary. Has she all her hormones tested? This is the first thing that needs to be done. If more than one hormone is out of range then it points to a pit tumor or cyst. The next step would be a pit MRI. This is my favorite site for symptoms of pit hormones: http://www.goodhormonehealth.com/symptoms/gland_hormone_symptom_table.html Have your daughter look at this table to see if she has other symptoms. She should be seen by a pitutiary endocrinologist--not just by a regular endo who primarily sees just diabetes patients. go to www.pituitary.org for Dr. listings.  (+ info)

How do you get a test for hypothalamus pituitary adrenal and hypothalamus pituitary thyroid?

My mother-in-law would like to have these test. She is 82 years old and in constantly going to different doctors to get this test and she says they do not know about them. Can somebody please give me an answer on how the test is performed sothat I can relay to her. She thinks she needs this test.
Thanks

The person to see is an endocrinologist who will probably arrange some sort of blood test.  (+ info)

What hormones does the pituitary gland control or release?

If you can please mention what side (anterior and posterior) releases what?
----------

The pituitary gland secretes hormones regulating homeostasis, including trophic hormones that stimulate other endocrine glands. It is functionally connected to the hypothalamus by the median eminence.

Anterior pituitary (Adenohypophysis)
Main article: Anterior pituitary

The anterior pituitary synthesizes and secretes important endocrine hormones, such as ACTH, TSH, prolactin, growth hormone, endorphins, FSH, and LH. These hormones are released from the anterior pituitary under the influence of hypothalamic hormones. The hypothalamic hormones travel to the anterior lobe by way of a special capillary system, called the hypothalamic-hypophyseal portal system.

[edit] Posterior pituitary (Neurohypophysis)
Main article: Posterior pituitary
The hormones secreted by the posterior pituitary are

Oxytocin, where the majority is released from the paraventricular nucleus in the Hypothalamus
Antidiuretic hormone (ADH, also known as vasopressin and AVP, arginine vasopressin), the majority of which is released from the supraoptic nucleus in the Hypothalamus
Oxytocin is the only pituitary hormone to create a positive feedback loop. For example, uterine contractions stimulate the release of oxytocin from the posterior pituitary, which in turn increases uterine contractions. This positive feedback loop continues until the baby is born.

[edit] Intermediate lobe
There is also an intermediate lobe in many animals. For instance in fish it is believed to control physiological colour change. In adult humans it is just a thin layer of cells between the anterior and posterior pituitary. The intermediate lobe produces melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH), although this function is often (imprecisely) attributed to the anterior pituitary

Could it be my hormones and pituitary gland and future height?

I was wondering if there could be something wrong with my pituitary gland? Also what could happen if I don't get it checked out? Also what could my future height be?

My stats are:
6' 1.5" tall
154 pounds
9" hands
Barely smaller than 14 shoes
42" from hip to floor
19" sleeve length
6' 6" uncle
6' 3" dad
6' grandmother

Any help is welcome! Please NO stupid answers! Thank you!
OMG! Can't believe I forgot to put I am 15.
----------

One important question: How old are you?

Overall though, it seems like you come from a family of tall people. Pituitary giants aren't as common in developed countries because it's recognized and treated far earlier than it was just a few generations ago.

Depending on your age, it's probably not likely, but if your height seems to be getting out of control, your hands and feet continue to grow or your jaws are suddenly growing, you should be evaluated by a endocrinologist.
