Pilonidal Sinus provoking back pain?

An embarrassing one, yes, but I've had a pilonidal sinus burrowing its merry way into my back for the last 2 years while I wait for the surgery to have it removed.

At the same time, about a month ago I hurt my back quite badly while not doing anything especially strenuous (just twisting and bending to lift something not especially heavy).

After some NSAIDS and a lot of physio (and no sitting!) I'm not in a huge amount of pain, however I do have sciatic nerve pain when bending backwards and when twisting.

The physio initially diagnosed a disc problem, which made a lot of sense, however some of the symptoms that I've been having more recently are inconsistent with that, and some targeted Googling has suggested that in some cases a pilonidal sinus may burrow its way toward the nerves around the spine and wreak havoc.

If there are any doctors out there who know a little about this then I'd like to know what are the chances are... am I being silly, or is there a realistic chance of a cause/effect relationship between the sinus & the back/sciatic pain.

What I find alarming is the thought that the sinus may have made its way towards the nerves in the area and may now become infected (as they are wont)... not a pleasant thought :/

Thanks!

No. While a very serious case might be this extensive, you would have to be one out of millions for this to be occurring - the chances are very slim and it would more likely be related to an underlying Spina Bifida. What is more common is that people with Pilonidals frequently sit and walk a little funny as they try to move with pain. This leads to strained muscles because the body is off balance all the time to compensate. So, the bottom line is that there is a chance that the two are related - many people report that their back pain went away after their Pilonidal surgery.

The best thing would be to get the Pilonidal dealt with. Assuming you are in the USA, there is no reason for it to be taking two years to get in for Pilonidal treatment from a Colon & Rectal surgeon.  (+ info)

im about to have an operation for a pilonidal sinus, what operations for a pilonidal sinus are there?

the doctor said about some kind of banding which confused the hell out of me
----------

Pilonidal disease is a common complaint affecting mainly men from puberty to their early thirties. Acute abscesses need to be drained and followed up with meticulous attention to hair and debris removal and wound packing. Wound infection should be treated with broad spectrum antibiotics, such as metronidazole and erythromycin, for at least two weeks depending upon response. Chronic pilonidal sinuses are best treated with wide excision and secondary healing.Long-term recurrence is reduced by good hygiene and regular depilation.  (+ info)

Pilonidal sinus - Post op pain...?

I have recently had an operation for a Pilonidal sinus. (17.03.09)
It was left as an open wound, the pain was bearable until about 3 days ago, when i started getting muscle spasms, they are very painful and happen at anytime, more so when i am moving around.

Anyway, i am asking for personal experience on how long your pain lasted? (or at least until you could go about your normal day without to much discomfort)
Did you get these muscle spasms?
And what pain relief did you use?
How long did the discharge last?
did the discharge have a strong smell?

Thank you.
Should i walk around the house regualy, or should i rest for long periods? it feels like the pain might improve if i get a bit of exercise.

I had my surgery (closed excision) on 3/16/09, but I had an open healing from a lancing before that & have done a lot of research, so hopefully I can help...

1. Pain should steadily decrease, but varies from person to person. Sometimes pain increases if the surgeon used a lasting anesthetic during surgery. If you were prescribed pain medicine, you should take it as prescribed (or as needed if you do not need the maximum allowed amount). If you were not prescribed meds & feel you need them, you should call your surgeon and ask about that.

2. No, I have not had muscle spasms. I have, however, had sharp pains (more since the surgery than I did after the lancing). Sharp pains could be from moving the wrong way, from nerve regrowth or damage, or it could be a problem.I do not, however, know if muscle spasms are normal. Again, I would advise you to discuss with your surgeon if possible.

3. After lancing I was prescribed Vicodin & after surgery Percocet and then Vicodin (Perc. made me ill). I took as needed, although I think that during the first week after surgery I should have taken more medicine and been a bit less active. This week I am still taking Vicodin for pain, although not often.

4. My incision is still draining. I had my stitches removed today, and there are several small open wounds (the stitches had not fully closed the wound), so I assume this is why a bit more is draining now. I have heard of wounds draining anywhere from a few days to several months if healing does not go well. This varies from person to person.

5. No, not a strong smell, but a slight smell. If your discharge contains pus (greenish) that is absolutely NOT good and you should contact your doctor immediately. Exudate is not the same as pus, and that is alright. It can be whitish or yellowish and has an odor, but in my experience it isn't a strong odor. If you have concerns, you should check with your doctor.

My advice is to spend as much time resting as you need, to not work out, but short walks through the house or for a few minutes outside probably won't hurt you at all. I say not to work out because that could cause undue stress on the wound if it is open or healing, which I'm assuming it is because you had surgery less than two weeks ago. Try not to bend too much or lay on your back, especially if either of these cause you pain. Be careful when sitting; consider sitting on pillows or using a Tush Cush (more info available at pilonidal.org).

You don't mention how large your wound is or whether you are on antibiotics, so these answers are not as specific as they could be. I hope this was of some help.

I suggest you visit www.pilonidal.org and read some of the information there, both on the various pages and in the "Community" section with forums. If you post these questions there, you are likely to get many more answers from people with more experience than I. My advice is that if you do go there and post, do not become distressed at some of the problems others have had. Most people heal and never have another problem after one surgery; it is the people with repeated problems who post there most often, which is good because they have much information, but bad because their stories are scary.  (+ info)

Pilonidal Cyst/Sinus has Burst....?

I have always known for about 10 years ive had a tiny little hole at the top of my butt crack, but never thought anything of it, now aged 22, 2 days ago i started getting some swelling right at the top of my crack, by today it was absolutely excrutiating, so much so that i could not sit, lay, anything........ when all of a sudden, blood and ooze started gushing from the little hole, and all i can say is...... wow, pain relief, although still tender, the pain has almost completely gone, and there is still blood seeping slowly from the little hole but no swelling, and no pain, i have bathed in antiseptic and washed, now should it all be ok and heal, was it a pilonidal sinus? thanks
----------

You may want to see a dr and get it looked at. The problem with these is that the hole may be small in your skin, but the area underneath can be huge. I would make an appt with your pcp to have them look at it. you may need antibiotics or wound care done to it. Good luck  (+ info)

Risks of untreated pilonidal sinus?

I'm pretty sure I have a pilonidal sinus. My mother has made an appointment for me to see a doctor in about a week, but I unfortunately waited a long time to tell my mother about it since I'm a girl and it occurs mostly in men. I'm only 15, but I've had it for around a year. It has become inflamed a few times, all of which I recovered from and took care of myself. But I'm really worried about it now because I read that it can evolve into an anal fistula, although my sinus is at the very top of the crease of my buttocks, which worries me even more because I also read that it could affect my spinal cord. How long does it take for a sinus to get that far into your body to cause an anal fistula/ spinal issues? I haven't had any back problems, or any sepsis symptoms either, but I'm still worried. Is there a possibility that it has reached my spine since I waited about a year to inform my mother?
----------

I am in the exact same situation as you except that I am 3 years older and I am a guy. I noticed it three years ago and took care of it when it was inflamed and didn't think it was a big deal. However I learned that it was a pilonidal cyst 5 months ago and went to see the doctor. At first, they put me on antibiotics to make it a little bit better but later they referred me to a surgeon and I just came back from the surgeon's office and made an appointment to get it removed.

I am almost 100% sure that it hasn't caused any serious problems for you yet. However it could always get infected so I suggest that you get it removed now. Most people don't do anything about it and leave it alone until it gets painful or causes damage to other tissues. When it becomes badly infected, you need to be rushed to the ER and get it lanced (painful) and excised (not very painful but takes forever to heal). So your choices are to wait and see if it causes any problems in the next 6 years, or get it removed now and never deal with it again.

Getting it removed:
Option 1: closed wound surgery:
Simply put, they close the wound once they take it out and it takes 4 weeks to heal. But there is a 25% infection rate and if that happens, then they have to open the wound and it'll take 8 weeks to heal.

Option 2:
Have them open the wound in the first place which takes about 8 weeks to heal.

I would personally get it removed now since you are in your summer break (just like me) and I don't think you want to risk having to get it removed during school. But you should definitely consult you surgeon and see what he or she recommends. I know you probably don't what the surgery now but since you are only 15, you should recover much faster.

Tip: don't pay too much attention to what your family doctor says. Pilonidal cysts are not their specialty and they don't know much about it. Ask your doctor to refer you to a surgeon and see what he or she has to say.  (+ info)

Is this a pilonidal sinus?

Well today, when I went into the shower, I noticed a small red bump on my buttocks, a little close to my buttcrack. It kinda hurts a little but not much. Is this a pilonidal sinus?

My sister had one a while ago and by the looks of it, it was EXTREMELY painful. She was screaming and she had a really hard time going to the bathroom.

I'm a 15 year-old male. So if it is, what should I do about it?

p.s. All stupid or non-serious answers will get reported.
I also live in Phoenix Arizona and it's summer, so could it be some kind of heat rash?
And btw it's like 2-3 inches on the right of my buttcrack.
And I just barely noticed it appeared somewhere around yesterday.

Do I have a "pilonidal sinus" and if so, what do I do? :(?

I'm 16 and female (in case that means anything?) and a few days ago I noticed a very tiny hole above my anus and I have been intensely upset/worried about it. I googled and it seems that it is a pilonidal sinus, but some of the photos I've seen are a lot worse that what I've got. I'm worried that mine will get to be like these. There is no discharge and it doesn't hurt. Any advice/help would be appreciated a lot, thanks :)
Sorry, I should've made that clearer. It's not immediately above, maybe an inch or two above.

Is it okay to clean your pilonidal cysts/sinus with peroxide and alcohol?

I have been diagnosed with pilonidal cysts/sinus and I am just wondering is it ok to clean them with peroxide and alcohol? I like to clean them and then apply a thin layer of triple antibiotic ointment to them, it just makes it feel more sanitary to me. But I am wondering if there are any health concerns with this? I don't have big open sores. i have 6 little holes the size of apple seeds and haven't had any problem with them but just am a clean freak about them.

Anyone had the Pilonidal sinus op recently and was it done by day surgery did u get out the same day?

Not recently, but about 7 years ago. Yes, I had it done with day surgery, and I did get out the same day. I had a spinal block and the procedure was the removal of my right sinus and it was left open to close on its own. I had to have someone drive me home, but I was able to leave a few hours after surgery.

Some people had major problems with pain with this operation. I didn't. Nothing could compare to the inflamations in the sinus before the operation. It healed well, and besides keeping the area clean and frequent follow up appointments, it was a breeze.

If you are having this done, good luck!  (+ info)
