my boyfriend has a pilonidal sinus?

for the last i would say two months hes been telling me about something bothering him at the bottom of his tailbone like a 'hole' which pusses, anyway i looked it up and found out its a pilonidal sinus, hes going to the doctor about it, will he need surgery? thanks
----------

Speaking from experience, a pilonidal cyst is quite painful. More often than not, unless the cyst is very small, surgery is the definitive treatment. He will not need to be admitted to the hospital, it can be performed in a same-day surgery unit, but he will lose some time from work or school.
Putting off treatment is not a good idea- the cyst will continue to grow. He's very fortunate that his cyst does drain on its own- in many cases they do not, making the pain intensify.  (+ info)

Pilonidal sinus question?

Do people with pilonidal sinus fart more or at least experience more of fart like sounds? I have had this problem for a while now and it's socially crippling me. I can't undertake the surgery now so I have to figure out a way to deal with this. And moreover, these sounds come after I take a shower (probably due to water trapped there) and after I eat (even if it's a small amount)

Thanks in advance for any help

I wouldn't be surprised if it were related - pits can contain air and air has to find its way out.
Surgery seems to be the only answer since the pit can become infected with recurring painful abscesses.
I don't know the answer all I can say is that you have my sympathy. Wonder if there is some kind of medical filler which can provide temporary relief in preventing the "farts"?
I would go back to my doc and ask if there is anything to tide you over this embarrassing episode till you can have remedial surgery.  (+ info)

some one please help about my pilonidal sinus!!!!?

i had a pilonidal sinus cut out ELEVEN weeks ago and it is still healing. after surgery i was left with an open wound that has to be packed everyday...im only young so it should have only taken like 8 weeks to heal but on my last trip to the clinic they said it has stopped healing altogether so i have to go tto a specialist....has anyone had this happen to their sinus? how was it fixed :( mine is still quite big!
----------

your diet is a large part of the healing process....plenty of protein is essential, also Vitamin C and zinc....make sure you are eating a healthy diet, it goes a long way to promote healing......sorry, when I had mine removed I was able to be sutured closed, but was still off work for a month.  (+ info)

My sons had one and to be honest I think he could have died, He had an all over body rash that kep appearing and the doctor said it was a allergic raction to something. Little did we know he had one of these and it was leaking poison into his bloodstream! Luckily it ruptured and we took him to hospital and it was removed but it had to be packed out for weeks afterwards and regular visits by the nurse. Don't keep leaving it is what I'm saying  (+ info)

pilonidal sinus- i have pilonidal sinus for 2 years. if i dont have the ultimate operation what'll happen?

i've that problem for 2 years having 2 minor drainning operation. i just want to know can i continue as usual life like now or it will be a major problem in future. what am i suppose to do now? have the operation or continue ignoring the abscess?
----------

I wouldn't ignore the abscesses. Pilonidal sinuses may abscess into your spinal tract, causing major life threatening problems. Talk to your doc, he/she can explain what problems you can expect and pros and cons of surgery.  (+ info)

Pilonidal sinus. has anybody had one removed and whats it like after the operation?

My husband had this cyst removed. It was extremely painful before the surgery. It was a quick procedure, and he had to be off of work for about a month. The reason is, they must leave the wound open after surgery, so that it doesn't create another pocket for a new cyst. He had a nurse come for the first week to clean it out with saline, and then pack it with gauze. She showed me how, and then I took care of it. It is not for someone with a weak stomach, because it is a very deep wound. He healed nicely and hasn't had any problems since. Good luck!

PS for people answering this question: A Pilonidal sinus has nothing to do with your nasal sinuses or teeth or skin!!! it is a sinus infection which causes a painful abscess in your tailbone area!!!!  (+ info)

Pilonidal disease is a common complaint affecting mainly men from puberty to their early thirties.

Acute abscesses need to be drained and followed up with meticulous attention to hair and debris removal and wound packing.

Wound infection should be treated with broad spectrum antibiotics, such as metronidazole and erythromycin, for at least two weeks depending upon response.

Chronic pilonidal sinuses are best treated with wide excision and secondary healing.

Long-term recurrence is reduced by good hygiene and regular depilation.  (+ info)
