Could I have photophobia?

Recently my eyes have become sensitive to bright light (sun, computer screens, some lights) and after some research I've come a conclusion that I could possibly have photophobia.

When outside on a sunny day I often find myself squinting because of the bright sun and I've had to dim the screen on the computer I'm using to stop my eyes from hurting and sometimes I find a headache come on.

I'm thinking of getting them tested just in case but what do you think?

For the record, I've had plenty of sleep and no trouble getting up in mornings so I don't believe its tiredness. I do spend some time sat in front of a laptop but when nothings going on I look away.

Thanks
My eyes aren't dry really. I have no trouble blinking and the water nicely at times. But I have seriously cut my time down in sitting in front of a laptop screen for god knows how long. I used to sit in front of it all day long now it's been cut down to around 5 or 6 hours with some breaks to play guitar or eat/drink.

I drink lots of water also.

Yes I have been recently experincing the odd headache too.

I wouldnt jump to conclusions and assume you have photophobia before you actually get checked out. Go to an optician/your gp and explain your problems and mention that you came across photophobia on the internet and that your symptoms are similar to that of photophobia.

Do you wear glasses at all? I squint a lot outside in the sunshine and get headaches quite often when I'm using the computer, and when I had my eye test they said I needed glasses for when I'm concentrating on something and using the computer etc.

I would really go and see a specialist, they will be able to help you more than me :) good luck  (+ info)

Is there such a thing as having a phobia of the dark?

If your answer is yes, could you tell me if there is a name for it? Yeah, I know there's photophobia, which is normally excessive sensitivity to light due to having an eye problem or disease, but it can also be an irrational fear of light.
----------

Known by a number of names - Achluophobia, Lygophobia, Myctophobia, Nyctophobia, Scotophobia, Fear of the Dark, and Fear of Darkness being the most common - the problem often significantly impacts the quality of life. It can cause panic attacks and keep people apart from loved ones and business associates. Symptoms typically include shortness of breath, rapid breathing, irregular heartbeat, sweating, nausea, and overall feelings of dread, although everyone experiences fear of dark in their own way and may have different symptoms. .  (+ info)

what is photophobia?

Photophobia (Light Sensitivity)

By Judith Lee and Gretchyn Bailey;
reviewed by Dr. Vance Thompson

Photophobia, or light sensitivity, is an intolerance of light. Sunlight, fluorescent light, incandescent light — all can be bothersome. Sometimes light-sensitive people are bothered only by bright light. In extreme cases, any light can be irritating.
Photophobia Symptoms and Signs

The main symptom of photophobia is discomfort in bright light and a need to squint or close your eyes to escape it. Headache may also accompany light sensitivity.
What Causes Photophobia?

People with lighter-colored eyes, cataracts and those who suffer from migraine headaches are more likely to notice sensitivity to light and glare.

Often, photophobia is a symptom of another underlying problem, such as a corneal abrasion, uveitis, or a central nervous system disorder such as meningitis. Light sensitivity may also be associated with retinal detachment, contact lens irritations, sunburn and refractive surgery.

Photophobia often accompanies albinism, total color deficiency (seeing only in shades of gray), botulism, rabies, mercury poisoning, conjunctivitis, keratitis and iritis. Certain rare diseases, such as the genetic disorder keratosis follicularis spinulosa decalvans (KFSD), are reported to cause photophobia. And some medications may cause light sensitivity as a side effect, including belladonna, furosemide, quinine, tetracycline and doxycycline.
Photophobia Treatment

The best treatment for light sensitivity is to treat the underlying cause. In many cases, once the triggering factor is treated, photophobia disappears. If you are taking a medication that causes light sensitivity, talk to the prescribing physician about discontinuing it or replacing it with another drug.

If you're sensitive to light, avoid bright sunlight and other bright lights. Wear wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses with ultraviolet (UV) protection  (+ info)

I woke up this morning with a headache and I still have it. What to do ?

I laid down for about 3 hours this afternoon and slept. I have taken Acetaminophen, drank a glass of iced tea.
I have photophobia and have been sitting around in the lounge chair with a towel over my face with the TV on. It seems to have gotten better, but not completely gone. What do you suppose is causing my headache and what do people do to make them go away? If I wake up tommorrow like this I will be crazy. I need this to go away.
Im a busy RN and work 13-16 hours in a hospital 4 days a week and answering questions has become a hobby. I dont drink, smoke, gamble or have any other bad habits. I doubt question answering has anything to do with my headache.
Its actually very relaxing. I have worked in the hospital for many years, but this headache has me baffled. I just think someone may have some idea about what to do for this headache. You know herbal medicine, or some trick up their sleeve.

There is no medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.
Acidity, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis,
Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy are their causes. None of them can be treated with medicine.
Acupuncture is the best treatment. I can treat it with naturopathy & YOG, but how can you manage pl see. I feel that a glass of cocoanut water at early morning can solve your problem if you have no cough or common cold.
Acupressure for acute H/A works nicely. Search a painful point behind your thumb nail(any) three to 10 mm away. Press that point couragiously or ask others to do it; it will pain for a moment but H/A WILL DISAPPEAR WITHIN A FEW SECONDS!
You try one herbal remedy IF H/A IS CHRONIC - two drops of drumstick leaves' juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it isvery strong.
