How to tell if you have a fever without a thermometer?

Is there any reliable way to tell if you have a fever without a thermometer? Other than just putting your hand on your forehead and seeing if it's hot?
----------

Putting your hand on your forehead doesn't tell you anything, because your hand and your head are both the same temperature if you have a fever. Someone else can put their hand on your head and tell if you are warm, hot, flushed or whatever, but it is very difficult for you to tell with any degree of reliability.
If you have a really high fever, you will feel hot and flushed.  (+ info)

How long after antibiotics are started should my child's fever be gone?

She has an eye infection and ear infection. She started taking Augmentin (basically Amoxicillin) on Monday night. She's had two full days of antibiotics. She is still running a fever (around 101 or 102, breaks and comes back throughout the day.) She is one year old. Does this mean the antibiotic isn't working? Or is it normal for a fever to linger for a few days after antibiotics are introduced?
----------

the antibiotics kill bacteria. the fever fights the bacteria. give her some motrin and plenty of fluids like pedialite for the night and if her temp goes back up tomorrow, i would call the pediatrician because of her age. if normally takes 24-48 hours for abx to work  (+ info)

How long should a fever last before seeking medical attention?

I've had the flu for the past 3 days with my fever ranging from 100.5 to 102.5. I think I may have bronchitis. I'm just wondering if the bronchitis would cause the fever or if there may be some secondary infection. Just wondering if I should see a doctor or if I'm just being an alarmist.
----------

The fever could be from the flu, the bronchitis or something else. A fever is one way a body fights off infection and a fever of up to 102 can actually be helpful to the body.

Most doctors will give these guidelines as to when to come in:
- a fever of 104 that will not go down after 2 hours of home treatment
-a fever staying above 102 for 2 full days
-a fever staying above 101 for 3 full days
-a fever staying above 100 for 4 full days

If you have an immune disorder, a heart problem or lung disease, you should be seen earlier.

If the fever happens with a very stiff neck, headache, shortness of breath, pain above the eyes or cheeks, pain with urinating or abdominal pain, you should be seen the same day.  (+ info)

Is it normal to have a low fever during the first 2 months of pregnancy?

I have a fever of 98.9 at the time, and i've been pregnant for 2 months and this hasn't happened before. I am having chills and I feel very nauseated, also I have a very bad headache. Also I feel as if my heart is skipping beats, it also feels as if it's a little hard for me to breath.
----------

Yes! In fact having a higher "basal temperature" is just part of being pregnant---many people who are trying to conceive are advised to keep a log of their temperature because having a slight "fever" is a good sign of pregnancy changes in the body!  (+ info)

How can you tell you have a fever withought using a thermometer?

I'm feeling really sick and I can't tell if I have a fever or not. Any suggestions on how I can tell?
----------

One way you can tell is by putting your hand on your forehead or your cheek. If you have a fever it will feel warmer than let's say an area like your hand.

However, I would recommend checking with your doctor (this can be done on the phone) as well to see what they say.  (+ info)

My son has had a fever for almost three days now. We took him to the doc and he said it was probuably viral since they couldn't find anything else wrong with him (no ear infection, no strep). It's not the flu. How long should I let him have the fever before I go back?
----------

Not long. Some may lead to chronic fart disorder. See your doctor for details.  (+ info)

Is there any quick way to reduce a fever quickly without taking painkillers?

I've had bronchitis for about a week so far and it was getting better, but all of a sudden I've developed a head splitting headache with a fever today. ----------
