Anyone who's had a peritonsillar abscess.. is it normal for the area to still feel "weird" for awhile?

I'm 24, had my first peritonsillar abcess a month and a half ago. Had to have it drained, went on antibiotics, it came back 2 weeks later because I guess the infection wasn't completely drained. I had it redrained and I've been fine for 3 weeks now, but my mouth doesn't feel like it used to before all this happened. I get pressure/minor pain in my jaw on the side the abscess was on.. sometimes my throat feels tight (but doesn't get sore). Also, before all this happened, my ears clicked everytime I swallowed.. now sometimes it doesn't click in the left ear when I swallow.. like it feels clogged. It feels different.. no pain, just not the same. I've spent hours trying to research this but I haven't found any info. I know this sounds slightly hypochondriac-ish, but I want to know what's going on.
----------

its not hypochondriac, you damages the nerves to some extent, hopefully you will recover completely and soon, keep doing gargles and talk to your doctor about an anethetic mouthwash which will essentially numb you up if you have pain, good luck  (+ info)

Has anyone heard of, or had, a peritonsillar abscess?

Yeah. Why ?

A peritonsillar abscess forms in the tissues of the throat next to one of the tonsils. An abscess is a collection of pus that forms near an area of infected skin or other soft tissue.

The abscess can cause pain, swelling, and, if severe, blockage of the throat. If the throat is blocked, swallowing, speaking, and even breathing become difficult.

Common Organisms Associated with Peritonsillar Abscess
Streptococcus pyogenes
Fusobacterium
Staphylococcus aureus
Peptostreptococcus
Haemophilus influenzae
Prevotella
Neisseria species
Bacteroides

Symptoms
Progressively worsening sore throat, often localized to one side
Fever
Dysphagia
Otalgia
Odynophagia

The doctor has several options for treating you:
Needle aspiration
Incision and drainage
Acute tonsillectomy
You will receive an antibiotic.

There is no home treatment for peritonsillar abscess. Call your doctor for an immediate appointment to evaluate your symptoms.  (+ info)

will this peritonsillar abscess (quinsy) go down with the antibiotics?

i had a quinsy drained 3 days ago and now that my tonsil swelling has gone down a bit i can see that i still have a small lump behind it. i have been put on antibiotics and have been on them since it was drained - will this disappear over the course or should i ask my doctor?
----------

well yes, just take your antibiotics FAITHFULLY. right dose, right time, right duration. After you've taken all of your antibiotics you MUST follow up wiht your doctor, he needs to examine your throat again. To find out if the antibiotic course has been effective.

Good luck!  (+ info)

Peritonsillar Abscess- Dr. didn't drain?

I went in yesterday to get antibiotics for strep throat, which I get every year, and was told I had a peritonsillar abscess. The thing is, I kind of always have that lump in the back of my throat, but it's not always filled with pus. I've been reading more about it, and everything I've read says it needs to be drained by a Dr. Mine didn't drain it, she just told me to gargle warm salt water three times a day to soften it so it would drain on it's own and gave me some antibiotics. Should she have drained it? Should I get a second opinion?
----------

hey babez,
ur doctor is absolutely right.
usually they drain abcesses in your mouth like around your lips, oral cavity and even your tooth but you can never drain an abcess in your tonsil. it is very hard to open your mouth that wide to reach your tonsil, you will gag and you might vomit.
the chances of pus leaking in your mouth and swallowing are very high.. ewoe... you don't want to do that.
best is what ever your doctor said if the problem is persistent you can have a tonselectomy so the problem will not occur every yaer  (+ info)

what is the diffrence in peritonsillar abscess and strep Throat?

I was having horrible pain in my throat for about 4 days. Bad fever, and had every sign of strep. Well the ibuprofen stopped working so I said fine im going into the er and beg them to make the pain go away. I went in and the doc looked at my throat and then said we are getting you on morphine and having a Specialist look at your throat.

Another doc came down said I had peritonsillar abscess and they needed to take a needle numb me then make a small cut in my throat and drain stuff out. Now that i cant feel the pain meds again im back to horrible pain but what is the difference. The doctor didn't tell me in a way i could understand.
What is the difference in this and strep? What would have happened if I didn't have it looked at? What is worse this or strep? Is it contagious? How do you get it?
----------

peritonsillar abscess is caused by diphtheria which is more dangerous and more painful than strep throat!
well basically the clinical feature of strep and diphtheria are same but the complication part is much more severe with the latter.. diph causes peritonsillar abscess and quinsy! if you leave it without draining it out , the tonsil may rupture and spread the infection to other parts of your body.. and more over diph throat is like excruciatingly painful and doesnt respond to ibuprofen... and the doc used morphine to relieve pain! but he must have told you to take anti diphtheritic drugs..!

final treatment of choice is tonsillectomy where you remove the tonsils surgically

What happens if I have a peritonsillar abscess?

I am a 20 year old female, nonsmoker, with mild tonsillitis. I have no health insurance so I have to rely on my school's clinic which will not offer anything if I have peritonsillar abscess since it's usually a small operation. E.R. is NOT an option because I have racked up bills from previous visits for spranged arm and severe strep. I am NOT positive I have one but I have done my research and it sure looks like I do... I'm very scared. Thank you for your help.

do i have strep throat or a peritonsillar abscess?

-one side of my throat hurts more than the other. especially when i take in a deep breath.
-my uvula points more to the side that doesnt hurt.
-there are patches of white stuff covering my tonsils.
-the side that hurts seems to be a little swollen
-when i woke up in the morning, my voice was really raspy and it hurt so bad to talk. but after a while it went away and i can talk now
-i have a horrible fever =[

i looked at symptoms of a peritonsillar abscess and i have most of them. but pictures of it show swollen, ball shaped tonsils. its making me think twice about whether its strep throat or not.

another thing... i cant go see a doctor because my dad thinks its "not bad" and that we shouldnt waste money for a "stupid cold." he really isnt that stupid... he just thinks im faking. WHICH I AM NOT!! but he wont believe me =[
----------

Either way, it cannot be confirmed without a culture from your throat. It DOES sound like streptococcus infection. A little heads up, strepto is an alpha-hemalitic bacteria which means, GO TO THE DOCTOR NOW before this blood-eating bacteria spreads to the rest of your body. Once inside the body, strepto can cause serious problems. It is septible to antibiotics... in other words, antibiotics can kill it. You need to go before the damages done cannot be reversed.

Problem #2, let Dad know he needs to take this either on faith or by inoculating himself.

BTW, you should NOT be in contact with other people until after finishing your antibiotics.  (+ info)

Turns out my strep throat turned into a Peritonsillar abscess.?

My strep throat had been killing me, litterly. So yesterday when my breathing started to become irregular my dad finally took me to the ER. Well when the doctor takes a look he tells me I have a Peritonsillar Abscess and that I'm going to need to be looked at for surgery. Luckily they let me go home because my dad is in the medical field but I have to go back today to get looked at for some type of surgery where they cut open my tonsils! Has anyone had this before, should I be scared?
----------

yes had it
no don't be scared
it will stop the pain; how can that be bad
you won't feel a thing, it gets numbed up  (+ info)

i had a peritonsillar abscess drained on thursday. it's sunday now. i feel better overall (no fever)?

but when i looked at my throat today i saw 2 more white spots in different places than where the abscess was. are these additional abscesses? i have been on antibiotics since thursday. is there a chance these are additional abscesses or can you only have one at a time? i guess i don't know what they look like because the first was 'hidden'?
----------

The peritonsillar abscess you had was probably due to a tonsillitis that got out of hand. Chances are with the abscess drained and healing properly, you still may have a mild case of tonsillitis. Give the antibiotics a few more days to help and these spots should clear up.
And to answer your question, yes you can have more than one abscess at a time but this doesnt sound like the case in your situation. Due to the lack of fever and "feeling better overall" statement, you are gonna heal just fine.
Dont forget to follow up with the E.N.T. that did the surgery.
Good luck...  (+ info)
