Peritonsillar Abscess?

In May, woke up with a sore throat looked down throat noticing tonsils swollen, bubbles and pus on tonsils. Went to ER, doctor told me she believes I may have Quinsy (Peritonsillar Abscess). Next day in alot of pain, went back to ER, had throat culture and blood test for GF. Bloods came back neg, throat swap all I was told was fungus was grown but it was not resistent to penicillin. She prescribed me Penicillin (25 tablets 500mg) for ten days to which I started immediately. Noticing the Pus was then falling off and the infection seem to be clearing up I was all happy once again able to swallow. 14 days later after I finish the course, I then notice it returns. This time I got to my GP who I tell this story to ONCE again and he once again does another throat culture has a spastic fit over the doctor only giving me a 25 tablet dose, prescribes me another round of penicillin (50 tablets-4 per day 500mg). Once again come the end of the treatement which i believe worked out the be once again almost 14 days I start showing signs again of the same thing. Soooo.... back off the GP (same doctor) explained same thing once again.. he does yet another throat culture this time prescribes Erythromicin. So I got off and take that for my 6 days course (I think) come the sunday of course my symptoms are gone. After sunday (last tablet) I notice my tonsil area once again becoming red and inflammed. No signs of any pus spots (hooray) but to my dismay, my left tonsil is still the one that is greatly enlarged. Thursday brings new light. Mouth still red raw, popping pills (was suppose to see doctor the wed but cos of receptionist stuff up, I am moved to saturday until I get a call cancelling saturday now moved to monday) my chest hurts. Friday night in agony all night very little sleep and notice pus nodules re-emerging (esp one spot to which I believe is where the abscess is but doctors apparently NEVER listen cos they're always right) get up saturday morning still can hardly talk, in complete agony from my chest and throat (extra pus nodules and bubbles devolped) so to hell with it go back to ER. They do ECG cos of the chest pain and its all clear so I sit and awake to be called. Go in, doctor listens to chest and heart etc (does NOT check glands nothing else) looks down my throat and goes ohh yes pus we're going to put you onto Roxithromycin (pretty much same area as Rulide- added drug than Eryc) and onto prednislone.
I have to go back in 3 days if it doesn't seem to get any better, I do have a doc app on monday to which I can talk to GP about it all. I am wondering if anyone else has had same experience or if someone who has any capable medical background could possible answer this. If you're gonna sit there and say (GO TO THE ER) well I already have and there is nothing else they will actually do. All I can ask for next is ENT and tonsillectomy.
Any input would be much appreciated. I am currently on Roxithromicyn (150mg 2 daily for 5 days) and Prednislone (25mg 2 daily for 5 days) I also was prescribed Panadeine Forte for pain relief.
The pain is literally unbareable and I am sick of seeing ppl who don't seem to look any further into it. I don't know if a throat swab can detect an abscess, but I sure as hell wouldn't wish this upon my worst enemy cos my heard kills my chest kills and it makes you so ill and light headed.
Also, is it contagious, my 5 yr old has a adenotonsillectomy in 3 weeks and if chances are he could catch the tonsillitis off me, I wanna get him onto something str8 away.

Deffy been classified as bacterial hence antibiotics. My belief is because it always starts in the one spot being that the top left side of my left tonsil that it's possibly where the abscess is to which continues to spread the pus, but I will request another blood test. My last one came back fine apart from the normal white cell count which was within reason for an infection of it's nature
the infection if bacterial in nature, is resistent to the antibiotics.
maybe the dr should do some blood tests.

They should re test you for mono (viral infection)

Tonisllitis is the medical term for red tonsils due to a bacterial or viral infection. so your child would prolly catch the bug thats causing ur tonsils to be red.

i had it drained yesterday and its gone but when can i eat! IM STARVING
It would be good to call the docs office and ask them, because the amount of time you need to wait could vary depending on the size and depth of the abscess. Usually, you can consume foods right away as long as it doesn't hurt too much. For at least several days, you should gargle with salt water to rinse out any food that might get stuck in the abscess. You run a very low risk of problems from eating liquids like soup or a milkshake as long as you rinse afterward.   (+ info)

Is it possible to have Peritonsillar Abscess after a Tonsillectomy?

Two years ago I had a Tonsillectomy, but since like a year I noticed a protuberance in the left, where my tonsil used to be. This sack-like thing seams to be fill with a substance, and from time to time it gets swollen, hurts and irritates the whole area making my life quite miserable.
I have seen many doctors but they seem to avoid the existence of such an abscess. I started to think it is because of the difficult procedure to cure it.

I think I have them, but then I look at the description, and they cause pain?
I'm so conufsed, what I have looks like tstep throat and peritonsillar abscess, but my throat feels fine, but I'm bugged by it and I go two new ones recently [and I've never gotten knew ones for the past several years, always the same ones stay]

Gahhh... I can't ask to go to the docter.
But its really making me wonder and I dunno
if you have an abscess it has to be drained and treated with antibiotics ... or it will cause complications like sepsis and might spread to blood and lymph nodes or cause airway obstruction ,,

pain and fever are common symptoms but not always present ... that's why you must consult the doctor ... :)  (+ info)

In appropriately treated uncomplicated peritonsillar abscess, a 90-95% success rate is reported with a 10-15% recurrence rate. It's important you keep your mouth as clean as possible. Bacteria formation is what causes this problem. It's probably going to take a few weeks before you feel better.

Pharyngitis with possible Peritonsillar Abscess?

I was diagnosed with exudative pharyngitis with possible peritonsillar abscess and given a single shot of bicillin in the booty. That was 2 days ago, and I honestly don't feel a lot better. I've been taking tylenol to keep the fever down (still goes up to 102 at times, highest was 103) and make the pain of swallowing managable. Now I have a headache in one spot on the back of my head and stiffness in the neck. Is this a red flag, and should I have seen improvement from the antibiotic by now? I am afraid of the possiblity of abscess, simply because I am well aware of what they do to treat them. My rapid strep was negative, I don't know the results of my culture. There is a lot more "white" on my tonsils than there even was when I first went in. Any ideas? I'm a little concerned about the new symptoms.
Ouuu, yucky! Sounds like you might have a tonsilectomy ( remove tonsils) in your future.

Peritonsillar abscess, antibiotics? Need to be drained?

I went to the doctor the other day for peritonsillar abscess and they just gave me antibiotics. Its been a couple of days and not much change. Ive had this before and theyve cut and drained it. Im wondering if they should of done this again. How long should I wait before going back to the doctors?
P.S. The draining of the abscess was the worst pain ever!!
You probably need to call your doctor to tell him you are still hurting. You might need a stronger antibiotic. Why you hurt so much when you had your abscess drained is because you cannot deaden where you have infection.  (+ info)

peritonsillar abscess recurrence in throat?

i had a peritonsillar abscess in my throat and i just got over it, and im getting my tonsils out in a year or less so that it doesnt recur after that, but im just wondering what the chances of the abscess recurring in the next year again before i get my tonsils out are..i know its a pretty high recurrence rate but i just want to know if it is most likely to happen again within a year..
Actually not everyone has a high rate of recurrence. It really depends on your anatomy.

Since an abscess of this type usually occurs in relation to an episode of tonsillitis I guess the real question is how often you get tonsillitis.  (+ info)
