Urgent Dental Help! Infection in Wisdom teeth.?

Ok, so I am 18, 6', 185lbs. I just went to the dentist for a consultation of the extraction of my wisdom teeth. He said that I had pericoronitis. It is an infection under the flaps of my partially erupted wisdom teeth. Now....on wikipedia, it states that pericoronitis should be absolved before the extraction of the teeth. This is because it can make it spread to the throat and cause serious complications. The thing is....my surgery is scheduled for tomorrow! Shouldnt this infection be resolved before the extraction of the teeth?

Also, he noted my large tonsils, then asked me about how I slept. I told him that I sleep okay, but most of the problems come from the amount of caffeine I have. Should I be worried about this? He didnt seem to bothered from it, but he asked me about my sleeping. Could it be from the infection in my wisdom teeth? cancer? I really have no idea, and I figure that since this doctor cant comprehend that the infection needs to be taken care of before the extraction, he probably wouldnt be able to diagnose a proper reason behind my enlarged tonsils...

Please help....im going under the knife tomorrow morning!

I would not worry about the present infection. What you read about was referring only to the most severe cases. If there is any worry about post op infection, I'm sure the dentist will prescribe some antibiotics along with some pain pills for you. If you have any concerns you will want to talk to him before the procedure. Good luck tomorrow.  (+ info)

Wisdom Teeth!?

Help, I'm having pericoronitis.

Symptoms include a swelling and redness of the gum around the eruption site, difficulty in opening the mouth, a bad odor or taste in the mouth, and pain in the general area which also run down the entire lower jaw or possibly the neck.

How do they cure it?
----------

Pericoronitis is a common condition which occurs as an inflammation around the soft tissue surrounding the erupting tooth. It mostly occurs around third molar(wisdom tooth). It can be treated with surgical excision of the soft tissue over the erupting tooth followed by antibiotics and analgesics. But in most of the cases dentist prefer to extract the tooth because of its recurring nature and removal of third molar doesnot make any difference to your chewing ability. So go for a check up today.  (+ info)

Bad taste and smell coming from near one of my wisdom teeth but no pain?

I have been trying to figure out what this horrible taste and smell is in my mouth. i will go to see a dentist if i cant fix it but i would like some feedback. I have only found one thing but it doesnt quite fit. I have found that it could be pericoronitis. The taste and smell is coming from near my wisdom tooth. There is no pain no swelling. it looks like its healthy perfectly fine. Pericoronitis usually leaves people with pain to the point of being unable to open their mouth. so im really confused. also my wisdom tooth has not broken through the skin yet. it is much more rare to get pericoronitis if the tooth has nor erupted yet. sooo... does anybody have any idea what this could be?
it has actually gotten much much better... it just still has the slight taste and smell. before it was REALLY bad though
my tonsils were removed when i was 4 and it is most definantly coming from that tooth

should I have my wisdom tooth out?

My molar three (M3) (bottom left) has being giving me jip - I have pericoronitis and had to go to the emergency dentist late last night. He drained it, flushed it, syringed it with corsodyl and gave me a 5 day course of metronidazole (evil stuff!)

For people that don't know what pericoronitis is it is where the M3 is semi errupting (half in/half out) the gum and there is an infection because the area logistically cannot be kept as clean as one would like.

For those that have had this problem - have you had the tooth removed or was the pericoronitis a one off? its not the first time I've had trouble with errupting M3 - last time was about 5 years ago however there was no infection - just swelling.

I'm in the UK so it would be free at the dental hospital - not at the dentists. go the NHS!

I have to think about this option before Wednesday when I see my regualt dentist.

Please advise.
----------

I had the same thing happen with both my bottom wisdom teeth. Half in, half out. My dentist recommended having them out, because of exactly the problem you are having - increased risk of infection because you can't brush the part of the tooth which is still inside the gum, yet bacteria can get in there. Bite the bullet and get them out. You won't regret it.  (+ info)

abscessed tooth or cavity? how do you tell the diff prior to going to dentist?

What's up with my throbbing tooth (diagnosis guess please)?
Yesterday, spontaneously, the back area (the tissue behind all the bottom row teeth, left side of my mouth) swelled up. It was so bad that my teeth couldn't even touch to chew. the pain was ridiculous. I thought it was simply a painful case of Pericoronitis. However, the swelling has since subsided (thanks to salt water rinses and aspirin). But now my very back tooth is throbbing. And it seems my neck lymph node feels a bit swollen (on the left side of my neck).

I do not have insurance and cannot go to the dentist until my check arrives.Do you think I will have to have my tooth pulled?
I tapped the painful tooth with a tooth scaler (to make sure it really was the tooth that was in pain and not surrounding gum) and it definitely was the tooth!
my insurance doesnt kick in until either July or August :(

PS. if its the tooth itself that hurts, could it really be my wisdom tooth sprouting in that would be causing the pain? if its the wisdom tooth, shouldnt my gums be hurting instead of an existent tooth (genuine question)?

I'm 26 years old by the way
----------

hmmm,,, It could be a periodontal lesion (abscess) since the pain is localized to one tooth, if it was a wisdom tooth pain it would have "probably" spread to different areas of your face and neck (ear, headache), so in the case of a periodontal your dentist will drain the abscess, clean the pocket and maybe have a root planning (filling below your gum) and prescribe antibiotics

I'm guessing your tooth is not decayed as you didn't mention it, but if it is then it could be a periapical lesion and you might need a root canal treatment

since your insurance is going to take some time, you should keep on rinsing with warm water and salt, use the aspirin or ibuprofen for pain

I hope you feel better soon :)  (+ info)

Horrid pre-op wisdom tooth extraction pain - is it serious?

I got my two lower wisdom teeth taken out last Friday, out-patient. They were impacted and were pressing on my other teeth, and it was confirmed that I had pericoronitis also. A few weeks passed untreated and then the two teeth came out. The pain wasn't that bad, but now I can't stand it! The Darvocet made me vomit like crazy, and even though I've abstained from it, I'm still incredibly nauseated. It might just be the half-life, but I'm not sure. My jaw hurts more than anything in the world and the pain is so intense, I can't sleep, eat, or be bothered to move or talk. My face is still swollen and I feel like dying. :( I don't think it's dry socket, but it could be.

I'm going to talk to my OS, but for now can you give me any pointers or advice? Thank you! >__<

Also: I'm fifteen, female, and I have braces, if that helps at all.
oops - i meant post-op. sorry, pain gets to ya i guess. :(
----------

are you taking any other medication? like antibiotics?

dry socket usually starts on the second or third day after a tooth is out. You will be in extreme pain, in tears usually, if that's a dry socket.

swelling is normal after extraction, but should subside after a few days. For the first couple of days you can place ice pack around your cheek, now you can place something warm to help diffuse the swelling.

Speak to your OS, never a bad idea.

SEVERE pain around newly rising wisdom tooth!?

I have fibromyalgia so for the past week I thought the pain from my wisdom tooth was just a flare, however now I think it could be something else. The gums above the tooth, slightly on the inside of my mouth around the tooth, and on the side facing the cheek are a bit bubbly I guess the word would be. It went away yesterday when the tooth started to come out more, but then it reappeared. There is an actual bubble on top of the tooth. The pain is severe, going from the tooth into my jaw, cheek, neck, and ear!!! It hurts SEVERELY to swallow, and to chew on that side, chew something too small, and to close my mouth. I looked up pain relief, seeing if there was like a time limit to the pain, or a threshold, but with putting in my symptoms, all I saw was IMPACTED TOOTH and PERICORONITIS. I was told when i was 12 having my 2nd molars coming in, that I needed a spacer, but then my mouth made room for them, so the doctor decided not to do it. I still have a baby tooth on top, but these wisdom teeth are on bottom. I have on partially showing, but it stopped coming in, there is nothing wrong with it, but I do notice it is slightly tilted so perhaps is impacted as well, and just stopped growing. This new one I can feel with my tongue is out a bit, but the swelling of my cheek and gums is too much for me to see if it is actually coming in sideways. Is it more likely that this is that infection with an impacted tooth, or are these symptoms common? My fiance said he never had this, but did have the severe pain, but he always has pain when it comes to his teeth (he HATES dentists and has not gone since a school required it). My breath isn't bad that I know of, but I cannot even brush the tooth next to this wisdom tooth coming in without blood and so much pain I start crying. Can someone please help me? If I go to a dentist what will they do? I only have HMO...
I still brush my teeth, its just PAINFUL. I did it anyway, and the gums where it is, but it hurts sooo bad!
----------

Food is getting trapped between the gum and tooth. Try rinsing with warm salt water. If you can, go see the dentist. He/she will prescribe you antibiotics and give you a prescription for pain. The pain will eventually go away, but it will surely come back again in the future. It sounds like you may need to eventually remove the wisdom teeth.

How much salt water can I gargle in 24 hours for infected gums?

Please help. I am a phobic of taking ANY medicine so I need an answer to this. I already gargled an entire glass of salt water today and I am wondering how many FULL glasses can I gargle per day?

I don't want to O.D. on sodium being absorbed in my body.

Also anyone have any suggestions to EASE the pain naturally so I can get some sleep tonight??? (the pain is spread to the back of my neck and my ear, and is mildly throbbing constantly and has created a sore throat . It is due to my wisdom tooth I think its pericoronitis.
----------

As often as you want to,, you are just going to gargle and spit it out,,, so it will not hurt you at all. Will do your throat good.  (+ info)

I need some advice here please......?

I normally live in England and am registered with a dentist down there, however following a car accident I'm back home in Scotland while I recover, which could potentially be for another couple of months.

I have a wisdom tooth trying to come through but there's no room in my mouth for it and it's growing kind of diagonally out of my gum rather than straight up through the gum. It's partially impacted and I think I've probably got a bit of pericoronitis (infection of the gum around the tooth). It's pretty painful where it's trying to come in, and I think I probably need to see a dentist about it, but I'm 250 miles away from mine.

Anyone know how I go about being seen by a dentist up here where I'm not registered with anyone? I can't afford to go private, so it would need to be NHS.

I have a dental catch-22, if you are an expert please advise?

I have pericoronitis and thrush. The thrush developed shortly after I had been experiencing dry mouth from taking albuturol (for asthma I developed during the beginning of spring) and antiboitics when my wisdom tooth was giving me pain . I recently changed jobs so I have put off going to the dentist for 3 or 4 months because I was uninsured. I made an appointment to see a dentist this friday. However, my concern is that I don't have pain but the cheek slightly above the lower wisdom tooth has swellled up pretty bad and I am scared that I might have cancer because there are the appearance of blisters, my hearing seems to be very slightly impaired. I also have experienced some numbness in my inside lips and cheeks after I have washed my mouth with salt water or mouth wash (is it bad to overdue the mouth washing?). Anyways do I have a serious situation on my hands or will the simple extraction of my wisdom tooth, antifungal medication, and antiboitics cure my oral calamities?
----------

my guess is yes. the blisters are probably part of the thrush or maybe where your tooth rubs against the cheek. both are treatable. Your asthma inhaler makes you more suceptible to thrush and so does taking antibiotics as they kill all the mouth bacteria that keep the fungus in check. yeah over doing the mouthwash is bad, keep it to once or twice a day.

if your still worried talk to the dentist when you go for your appointment.  (+ info)
