What is pelvic inflammatory disease? Is it serious? Treatments?

Are there any home remedies? Can you still have children with it? Thank you everyone.
Just so you know. This question is not about me. Thanks again.
----------

Inflammation of the pelvic organs like vagina, cervix, uterus etc. is called PID. It ascends up further to involve fallopian tubes(salpingitis) and results in infertility. Causes may be poor hygiene, STD, abortion, blood borne infections, allergy to locally applied and inserted things like tampons etc. It is therefore to be taken seriously.  (+ info)

What else can causes Pelvic Inflammatory Disease apart from STDs?

can it be contracted in other ways?
----------

PID occurs when bacteria move upward from a woman's vagina or cervix (opening to the uterus) into her reproductive organs. Many different organisms can cause PID, but many cases are associated with gonorrhea and chlamydia, two very common bacterial STDs. A prior episode of PID increases the risk of another episode because the reproductive organs may be damaged during the initial bout of infection.

Sexually active women in their childbearing years are most at risk, and those under age 25 are more likely to develop PID than those older than 25. This is partly because the cervix of teenage girls and young women is not fully matured, increasing their susceptibility to the STDs that are linked to PID.

The more sex partners a woman has, the greater her risk of developing PID. Also, a woman whose partner has more than one sex partner is at greater risk of developing PID, because of the potential for more exposure to infectious agents.

Women who douche may have a higher risk of developing PID compared with women who do not douche. Research has shown that douching changes the vaginal flora (organisms that live in the vagina) in harmful ways, and can force bacteria into the upper reproductive organs from the vagina.

Women who have an intrauterine device (IUD) inserted may have a slightly increased risk of PID near the time of insertion compared with women using other contraceptives or no contraceptive at all. However, this risk is greatly reduced if a woman is tested and, if necessary, treated for STDs before an IUD is inserted.  (+ info)

can Pelvic Inflammatory Disease be caused from somthing other than an STD?

I was just diagnosed with PID and i am trying to find some information on the subject
----------

yes it can be cause by other things like

urin infections

What causes PID?

Bacteria (a type of germ) moves up from a woman's vagina, infecting her tubes, ovaries, and womb. Many different types of germs can cause PID. But, germs found in two common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)–gonorrhea and chlamydia–are most often the cause of PID. After a person is infected, it can take from a few days to a few months to turn into PID.

It is rare, but you can get PID without having an STD. No one is sure why, but normal bacteria found in the vagina and on the cervix can sometimes cause PID.
Are some women more likely to get PID?

Yes. You are more likely to get PID if you:

* have had an STD
* are under 25 and are having sex
* have more than one sex partner
* douche. Douching can push germs into the womb, ovaries, and tubes, causing infection. Douching can also hide the signs of an infection.
* have an intrauterine device (IUD). You're less likely to get PID if you're tested and treated for any infections before getting an IUD.  (+ info)

If you have pelvic inflammatory disease would it show up on routine blood work?

It would most likely show up as elevated leukocytes levels in your blood. It would probably show up better in a Urinalysis, because of the elevated leukocytes and a presence of bacteria in the microscopic examination of the urine sediment.  (+ info)

I have pelvic inflammatory disease, the doctor told my the only way to get it is std, is this true?

The thing is, both my boyfriend and I have been tested for stds and we were both clean. We have been together for 15 years and as far as I know we are both faithful. I have had several utis, colitus, and kidney ifections over the years. I also got a staff infection while in the hospital for apendex removal about four years ago.
I have also had a miscarriage february of 06 and did not go back for the dnc the doctor recomended.
----------

PID can also be caused by Bacterial Vaginosis if it's left untreated which is not an STD. I would think that if you didn't have a DNC and didn't let them check to make sure all the tissue is out that could cause the infection as well.  (+ info)
