Patellar dislocation?

I dislocated my right patella Thursday evening. I'm wondering what structure(s) within the knee are most likely to be damaged? Patellar shift was lateral, greatest pain and swelling was and is medial.
I tore the ACL on the other knee a few years ago and it didn't hurt as much as this. I figure some ligament or tendon holding the kneecap in place ripped, but I don't know who the likely suspects are. There's a lot of stuff in that one joint.
----------

Well I know the pains of a knee injury just like you had the unfortunate mishap of finding out that it really sucks. I would remember to keep in mind possible injury down the line to the Medial Meniscus, the MCL, ACL, PCL, LCL, and the Medial Condyal  (+ info)

Is it possible to tear the ACL from a patellar dislocation?

Four years ago I was injured and was told I had a patellar dislocation, My doctor told me i had a slight lateral meniscus tear and a bone bruise and to do PT and I'd be fine. I found out halfway through this year that my ACL had been torn then (confirmed by retrieving my old MRIs) and had deteriorated.
Wouldn't an ACL tear require/result in a knee dislocation, not just patellar?
Note: i am aware of the rarity and difficulty of total knee dislocation, i just can't understand why displacing the knee cap could cause a tear in my ACL.
I hav had multiple dislocations since the first, but the original injury and MRI were together and I had never suffered any type of injury previous to cause such damage; I was only 15.
----------

Many times a patellar dislocation is caused by a rotational or twisting injury. This is the same mechanics of injury that is common for an injury to the ACL. A tear of the ACL would not result in dislocation of the knee. This would involve many more structures of the knee and would be very obvious.  (+ info)

How can I prevent patellar subluxation dislocation?

I 've had this since high school, I'm 23 now. I tried therapy, does no good. Is there surgery out there for this kind of knee problem?
----------

Yes there is surgery. I had it done on my right knee after I was in physical therapy and used a tape to help get the patella back in place. Eventually I started having numbness in my toes and I was scheduled for something called a lateral release. It was done with sedation (not general which involves a tube in the airway) and I never felt the needles for the numbing and I woke up in recovery and wasn't sick like I was with a previous surgery with general anesthesia. I did need crutches. Ask an orthopedic surgeon to help you out and get recommendations if your current orthopedic dr. hasn't offered you surgery. You've dealt with this to long. I also had mine since high school but never went to the dr. until after I felt my knee "pop" and was 25yrs old at the time when I put my infant daughter into the bath. The pop could have been the patella going further towards the side of my knee. I had an MRI to make sure nothing was torn. My knee feels great now and I had the surgery in 1997.  (+ info)

is it possible to walk in a week after dislocation of the patellar?

is it good to walk after a patellar dislocation?

its been a week and my knee doesnt hurt at all, even when i dislocated it
----------

I don't recommend it. There could be some instability and weakness around the area, despite there no being any pain. I recommend you see an orthopedic specialist and have them do a diagnostic test. That way your condition can be properly diagnosed and a proper treatment plan can be developed.

Good luck.  (+ info)

post patellar dislocation, do knee supports really support the knee from recurring patellar dislocation?

i had my patella dislocated twice, and on those two events i wasnt wearing anything, now im wearing this

http://images.google.com.ph/images?hl=tl&q=lp%20support%20knee%20brace&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi

of course with wearing that, ill be exercising my hamstrings and quadriceps, and a little more discretion while playing. does knee support really help lessen the chance of recurring disloaction?
----------

As an orthopedic doctor, I commonly give my patients patella/knee supports like the one you are using. While not 100%, the chances that another dislocation are significantly decreased, especially while playing sports. You are doing the right thing by exercising just make sure you are doing so in moderation and working up to full function. Make goals-i.e 0-2 weeks after injury *simple exercises goal full weight bearing, control swelling * 2-6 weeks goal walking/biking, 6-12 full functionality and complete return to sport. Good luck re-dislocations are very common use discretion and hopefully you have already consulted a good orthopedic doctor.  (+ info)

What treatment is there for a patellar retinaculum tear?

I dislocated my knee cap (patella dislocation/subluxation), as well as have a lot of fluid and internal bruising. I also have a medial patellar retinaculum tear. I am most likely going to have to have surgery, but am wondering if surgery is also the treatment for the tear, or if it should heal on it's own, and if surgery, what type of sugery.
----------

If by chance you should have to have surgery, it would be an arthroscopy in which the physician makes three small incisions around the knee cap and looks inside with a scope. If there is in fact something torn, it can be repaired through the scope. This is an outpatient procedure and your return to daily activities should be quick. I would recommend exercises with physical therapy. They work wonders and will show you exercises to strengthen the knee to keep it from going out and tearing the meniscus further if you do not have surgery. You may possibly look into a patella stabilizer as well which will help to stabilize the knee cap.  (+ info)

Knee dislocation (not patellar dislocation)?

is the patellar tendon damaged in any way during a knee dislocation? (not patellar dislocation)

injury of cruciate ligaments, meniscal injuries and injuries of collateral ligaments can cause the same thing as well as ligamentum patellae injury..  (+ info)

Should I go see a doctor (patellar dislocation) ?

So about a month a go I dislocated my left patella playing football. I didn't go to the doctor since I have been through a lot of sports injuries without seeing one. It's creeping up on five weeks since my injury and there is still a lump on the outside of my knee that won't go down. I have decent range of motion, but there is still some pain. I have looked up rehabilitation exercises and stretches and can complete a few of them but the others have caused pain. I have my days when it doesn't hurt bad and others where I need my brace just to walk. Also I don't have complete control over my leg, my knee goes into a slight hyper extension when I walk and pops. I've read that these are all symptoms of patellar dislocation, and the injury takes around 5-9 months to heal but I was just wondering if I should see a doctor to make sure that there is nothing wrong other than the regular aches and pains experienced with this injury. What do you guys think?
