Can coffee or too much caffeine in the diet daily cause pancreatitis?

I have a friend who just got back from the Hospital with a really bad case of pancreatitis. I have hypoglycemia and drink caffeine drinks daily and am concerned that I could get it too if I am not careful to cut down on my caffeine consumption.

Gallstones and alcohol abuse are the most common causes of pancreatitis. Less common causes include certain types of infections, high triglycerides, certain medications, and injury. If pancreatitis is long term, it may develop after an attack or after several attacks over many years. Most attacks of pancreatitis are treated in the hospital with pain medications and fluids given IV. You can read more here

Can lupus be a cause of pancreatitis since lupus is an autoimmune disease?

My Mom has been battling pancreatitis for over a month with little relief unfortunately she is losing a lot of weight which is something she cannot afford to do. She is on an all liquid diet and I am afraid of her becoming malnourished. Any Help would be appreciated
----------

I am sorry your mom is having such a hard time of it. Yes, lupus can attack any organ in the body. But there can be many other reasons for pancreatitis. It is important to let the doctors do the diagnosing. Lupus is a complex disease and not easy to diagnose. And they will not make a diagnosis of lupus until everything else is ruled out.

Your mom needs to have opend discussions with her doctor to find out what he/she is exploring. If the doctor refuses to communicate with her, it may be time to fire that one and get a new one.   (+ info)

Does anyone have pancreatitis that does not drink at all like me?

Has anyone had pancreatitis that does not have a gallbladder like me? The two main causes of pancreatitis and I have neither! Why am I having this? Does anyone have the same thing?
----------

i know 2people ,who had pancreatitis, and weren't alcoholics.just suddenly felt sick, fever etc.found out in hospital its pancreatitis. One person was taking Lipitor(a medication) and that may have caused it?
I had my gallbladder removed 4 years ago:i was very sick after.the pancreatic duct and bile duct join and form almost an Y shape before emptying into the small intestine. My Dr explained: if there is a blockage in this duct, everything is blocked from draining.I had incredible pain on my left side and right side.Maybe you have some type of blockage of the duct, and the pancreas is very sensitive.did you have an MRI?  (+ info)

Does pancreatitis affect the ability to get pregnant?

I was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis last week. I'm irregular in my periods to the point where I have to take medroxy-progesterone. I noticed that this month I didn't have to take it and as soon as I got out of the hospital I got my period. Does my pancreatitis have anything to do with me not getting pregnant?
----------

I tried to find the information for you but found nothing conclusive. If your gynecologist does not have the answer than try contacting any of the pancreatitis support groups, I am sure they know the answer:

can i go to gym and follow a high protein diet after acute pancreatitis?

Is there anyone who has been able to play bobybuilding after acute pancreatitis?
----------

1) Your body doesn't need more than 50 grams of protein per day... If you consume more than this, your body will attempt to get rid of the access by leaching calcium from your bones.
2) A study by the Cancer Research Center of Hawii has found people who eat processed meats have a 68% greater chance of getting pancreatic cancer than those who don't.

What to expect from acute pancreatitis?

My dad went to emergency yesterday and they diagnosed him with acute pancreatitis but they aren't really sure. What to expect from this? Is it serious?
----------

Acute pancreatitis: Sudden inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas abruptly becomes inflamed and then gets better. Some people have more than one attack but recover fully after each one.

The cause of acute pancreatitis is most often alcohol abuse or gallstones. Other causes include use of prescribed drugs, trauma or surgery to the abdomen, or abnormalities of the pancreas or intestine. In rare cases, the disease may result from infections, such as mumps. In about 1 case in 6 or 7, the cause is unknown.

Symptoms usually begin with pain in the upper abdomen that may last for a few days, is often severe, and may be constant, just in the abdomen, or it may reach to the back and other areas. The pain may be sudden and intense, or it may begin as a mild pain that is aggravated by eating and slowly grows worse. The abdomen may be swollen and very tender. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, fever, and an increased pulse rate. One often feels and looks very sick.

In about 20% OF CASES, THE DISEASE IS SEVERE. The patient may become dehydrated and have their heart, lungs, or kidneys fail. In the most severe cases, bleeding can occur in the pancreas, leading to shock and sometimes death.  (+ info)

Is Severe Acute Pancreatitis really correlative to nightmares? or is it just a myth?

cause i've heard a number of times that people who are known to have died from "nightmares" actually died from Severe Acute Pancreatitis. how true is that?
thanks for the answer, Neka. but I just need a clarification, not a rhetorical question.
Thanks dr. shahriar, but how come there was this incident in my friend's country wherein a person died from it yet had no symptoms at all? it was declared in the autopsy that such condition killed him instantly.

can amalase levels be normal even with pancreatitis?

I had pancreatitis a while back, and my amalase levels were elevated, however I am having the same exact symptoms and sever pain similar to that of pancreatitis attack, but I went to the doctor friday and my amalase levels were normal. Could it be possible to still be suffering from an attack of pancreatitis?
----------

The previous poster is absolutely CORRECT. I suffered with chronic relapsing acute pancreatitis for over 10 years. My enzyme levels were finally caught elevated about 2 months prior to my pancreas being removed. Yes, I live without a pancreas, the surgery is termed total pancreatectomy with autologous islet cell transplant. I wouldn't take a pancreas if they were being given away.
I have been to most "known" pancreas specialist in the US. I have read and been told that by the time the pain starts with the episode, the enzyme levels have already started to decline. Most of the time, people wait a day or two and try and ride it out themselves, and then when they can't stand it anymore they go to the Dr and then the results are low normal. Go to the Dr or at least call and try to obtain and order for lab work to be done as soon as the symptoms are first felt.
There are many fine yahoo groups that deal with this subject. I highly suggest finding one that meets your needs and learning all that you can. I can tell you from experience that most physicians aren't aware of what we need or how bad the pain really can be.  (+ info)

Pancreatitis can be caused by alcohol, but it seems that it would have to be long term use of alcohol (as alcoholism is listed as a possible cause). More likely, it's an infection that is causing your symptoms. The Mayo Clinic has a good site on pancreatitis, it's causes and treatments.  (+ info)
