My wife has Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome post embryo transfer and it is resolving. Does that mean a BFN?

My wife is undergoing IVF and she developed OHSS 1 day after the embryo transfer. Today is day 8 and she is feeling better. Unfortunately, she is getting nervous because she is concerned that she did not get pregnant? Anybody know if OHSS can get better and one can stil be pregnant?
----------

The good news is that she can still get pregnant. In fact, pregnancy can set off OHSS in some cases. I suggest you read the article - it explains it better than I ever could.  (+ info)

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome?

I'm in so much pain. I took clomid this cycle, and now AF is here. I feel like my ovaries are going to bust. This is my 5th cycle on clomid. Not consecutively the first three were when we were trying with our second child. I've had nausea, a 6lb weight gain in less than 48 hours, and severe severe pain. Just wondering if anyone has had OHSS while on clomid?
----------

Yes I have, not as bad as when I did an IVF cycle, but it is pretty nasty on Clomid as well. I would call your OB/GYN/RE right now and make sure you aren't bordering on the really unhealthy side of OHSS. The weight gain is worrisome, I believe they told me if I gained a couple of pounds in 24 hours, I needed to call my doctor. The problem is that OHSS seems to get worse continually before it gets better because your follicles are constantly releasing fluid into your abdomen. I had very little fluid around my ovaries and I was in horrible pain and I had a hard time breathing. I was in bed for a week but I only had moderate OHSS (no hospital time for me). Call your doctor right now and describe your symptoms.  (+ info)

I have ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome can i get pregnant i been pregnant twice before i got this syndrome?

its been 5 years ago when i got pregnant
----------

Most people only get OHSS as a side-effect of some sort of fertility drugs, like Gonal-F or Follistim. Are you on these type of medications? If so, your doctor can coast you on the meds to keep your OHSS from flaring up too much and that will give the eggs time they need to mature. I have seen many women suffering from OHSS on the fertility boards I post on get pregnant while suffering from it, so it can definitely happen with the right medical care and supervision.  (+ info)

Ovarian Hyperstimulation?

Has anyone had this? What did you do to make yourself more comfortable?
----------

OMG, yes. I got pregnant after taking fertility injections and was overstimulated. I had to be really careful, because I was pregnant... (which probably added to the hyperstimulation as well). I put a warm water bottle on my lower stomach/groin for the terrible cramping. You could use a heating pad on low.... I used the water bottle because I knew I was pregnant and didn't want to raise my body temperature, which is bad for the baby. Also, drink, drink, drink water. Drink until you feel like you may drown! It helps immensely. If you aren't sure if you are pregnant, take some regular strength Tylenol, just in case. You don't want to take pain killers that are bad for the baby. Baths really helped too. Just make sure the water isn't "hot." Just nice and warm, and don't stay in too long. Good luck!  (+ info)

could these be signs of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS)?

i am due to ovulate any day but over the last two days i have been in alot of pain, i know its not an infection but it does hurt alot, i have taken some painkillers but they have little efffect on this, and also i am short of breath been having this for almost if not more than a week, feeling a little warm (temp) and been getting pains in my legs i am sooooo worried.

We are on our 5th round of clomid now and this is the worst it has ever been although i always get pains, its usually just one side that's sore but this month its both and alot worse than usually.

please help can't get an appointment at the doctors until next thursday...

oh i also have PCOS.
----------

Yes. Shortness of breath is a more severe symptom of OHSS. Are you still experiencing this? If so, I would try and see if your clinic has an off hours doctor to speak with you. If they do not have a doctor for you to speak to, go into emergency. Thursday is not soon enough. You really don’t want to take any chances. You may have built up fluids that need to be drained. OHSS with Clomid is very rare. Although you can feel bloated and uncomfortable, there usually is not enough of the drug to stimulate your ovaries to develop so many follicles that you over stimulate. BUT, that is not to say you have not developed OHSS. I got OHSS on my last fresh IVF cycle. Other than extreme bloating and cramping, I would not have known I had OHSS if it weren't for positive blood test. I was told to watch my waist size (with a fabric tape measure) and see if it was increasing, watch weight gain (weight gain of greater than 2 pounds per day indicates OHSS), and make sure that the fluid I was releasing was the same amount that was going in. Right now find some sodium rich foods and drinks and get as much in as you can. Gatorade and V8 are two that were recommended to me by my RE. I am so sorry you are going through this! Keep me posted on how you’re doing!

Edit: Kaba my clinic had me do the opposite of you and everyone I know who has had OHSS was told to get in sodium rich foods and avoid water. Salt pulls the fluid from the abdomen. Water can build up the fluids making symptoms worse. The reason for Gatorade and specifically no water in OHSS is that with OHSS your blood vessels become leaky and you leak fluid into the surrounding tissues. Gatorade contains sodium which helps keep the fluid in the vessels helping your the to evenly distribute the fluid in your body instead of it gathering in your ovaries, abdomen, or your lungs. I guzzled Gatorade/V8, salty crackers, canned soup when I had OHSS and it never got worse. I also got pregnant that cycle and OHSS when you are pregnant can get much worse. My symptoms subsided shortly. It is advised you drink lots of water while on the stimulation medications but not if you have OHSS by most clinics. Then they told you to drink green tea and iced tea, which has caffeine, but then told you not to drink caffeine? Curious! Good you got better!  (+ info)

How long can polycystic ovarian syndrome last?

I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome at the age of 27. I've just turned 33 and still continue to have acne breakouts even though I take the pill, Yasmin on a regular basis. I never had acne until I was 27 and soon found out I had poly cystic ovarian syndrome. How long can this condition last, am I doomed to have acne and poly cystic ovarian syndrome until my cycle ends sometime in my 50's?
----------

Well I am 20 and I have had it for a year. I believe you will have it for the rest of your ovulating life but there are meds you can take for it. One popular one is Metafomin. Go to your OBGYN and get on meds they help:) Good luck! I have one question tho...Have you had kids since you were diagnosed? Message me back.  (+ info)

I need some advice on polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, how did your doctor treat it?

I was just diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome and was wondering what to expect in treatment for this. I have small cysts on my ovaries, and they are big and bulky. I was just wondering if you have this syndrome how your doctor treated you. Thanks for the advice.
----------

I dont have PCOS, but I am a Registered Nurse and I once attended a surgery called "ovarian drilling"... there may be other names for it but it is a sort of unconventional type treatment that they've been doing for quite a while now... they drill tiny little holes into the follicles all over the ovaries... it's a simple procedure... I believe they still use a scope down thru the belly button ... so no scar... and the holes acutually stop cysts from forming... it was amazing to see and it actually does work for women who want to get pregnant.  (+ info)

What is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and do you have some info on it?

My doctor just told me recently she thinks I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. She really didn't explain to me what it was, so I am just wondering.

I am 14 years old and I have type 2 diabetes, so how could this effect me?

Any information you have can help, thanks.
I have had Insulin Resistance already.

And can you get rid of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome?
----------

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common hormonal disorder among women of reproductive age. The name of the condition comes from the appearance of the ovaries in most, but not all, women with the disorder — enlarged and containing numerous small cysts located along the outer edge of each ovary (polycystic appearance).

Infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods, excess hair growth, acne and obesity can all occur in women with polycystic ovary syndrome. Menstrual abnormality may signal the condition in adolescence, or PCOS may become apparent later following weight gain or difficulty becoming pregnant.

The exact cause of polycystic ovary syndrome is unknown. Women with polycystic ovary syndrome may have trouble becoming pregnant due to infrequent or lack of ovulation. Early diagnosis and treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome can help reduce the risk of long-term complications, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.  (+ info)

what is a cure for polycystic ovarian syndrome?

Im am 13 and my mom is a paramedic and she thinks i might have polycystic ovarian syndrome. I keep wondering if i will need surgery if i do have it. I am going to an ultrasound soon. If i do have this will i need surgery? Or will the cure just be a pill, like my mom says?
----------

If you think you have this you should set up an appointment with an Endocrinologist, which is a doctor the deals specifically with hormones.

You most likely will not need surgery. Only if there is a complication with the cysts. Some women don't even have the cysts.

You may be put on a pill to help with symptoms like acne, excess hair and excess weight. Or a pill for called Metformin for diabetic symptoms that can sometimes occur.
