how do i get back my strength?

i am a skateboarder and recently i had to take 5 months off because of osteochondritis dissecans.
but now im back skateboarding and have been for about 1 week.
and it feels like all my muscles just dont work.
if i dont land a trick and i just go forward off my board it take me longer than it should to stop myself because.
my hamstring(whatever muscle that goes from above your hip to your thigh gives me so much pain after about 10 minutes of skating. and on the outside of my lower knee whenever i land it hurts a lot. it feels like the muscle i just straining alot.
how can i get back my strength in my muscles and get back skating like i used to be able too. both my knees are sore at the end of the day and my legs. what are some good stretches for hamstrings and knees
----------

Eat more food that has protine like chicken or beef, since this will help gain more muscle strength, and drink a lot of milk to strengthen up your bones. doing stretches will help with the weak feeling you get in your muscles. Try doing push ups and sit-ups and cardio like running. I'm sure you'll start feeling like your normal self in no time:-)  (+ info)

Help diagnose my son's condition!!!!!?

My son has an undiagnosed genetic condition--first thoughts were a skeletal dysplasia--now not sure! Family history of shortness and arthritis--he also has mild scoliosis in the lumbar spine, plus compressed & bulging discs in the cervical & thoracic spine, he is 15 & is 4' 11", he has osteochondritis dissicans of both knees & ankles, he has flat feet, he has a rotated left tibia, and he is knock-kneed. He has a history of allergies to trees & pollen, asthma, & migraines. No history of deafness (hearing problems due to allergies), no eye problems--family history of severe near sightedness. Father's side carries the history/father's side is French. Mother's side is German/American Indian. Mother's side has history of extremely tall men. Son is also a fraternal twin--twin has Osgood Schlatter Syndrome and is ten inches taller, near sightedness, no asthma, no allergies. Can someone help diagnose this--anyone w/ similar symptoms or story? Genetic testing hasn't been done but MRI's were!

There are dozens and dozens of genetic diseases. Without doing genetic testing, you may not be able to find out.  (+ info)

what is the best knee brace to wear on and off the slopes that will provide full mobility yet support properly?

hey. im 20 and 5'2 (i dunno if it makes a difference for my ?) i think i either have acquired Chondromalacia patella or Osteochondritis dissecans, when i walk there is a popping feeling in my knee cap. like every time it goes in and then back out, it feels like it pops out. it started with one knee after a fall where i tweaked it to the side a bit too much in the air freeskiing. it was bruised and i couldnt kneel on it or put much pressure on it for about 3 months after, so i started putting the weight i didnt use on that knee, on the other. for a while the popping feeling would go from one knee to the other and so.. occasionally both pop. it gets worse and feels like something is rubbing together inside my knees. i have no health insurance and wont stop skiing or skateboarding, so i figure the best thing is to prevent whatever iv got from getting worse and possibly help my knees to feel better. someone told me that don joy knee braces are the best for sports. i tried the ace knee supports that drug stores sell, the one with the hole for the knee cap and the wire down the side. it makes it better for like 5 mins, then starts sliding down and is not comfortable at all. what do you think i have and what is the best brace type thing for it?
it dosnt make sense to spend a crap load on a doctor when the mri they will take will cost more than braces and the mri will do no good if i cant afford to do anything with the mri. i am limited on funds. i still owe the discount clinic money and wont be able to afford insurance till about January or February.
----------

I would try the Don Joy Tru-Pull lite knee brace while you're doing any sport related activity. It's pretty cool and will allow you to track your knee cap better. However I would do some quad strengthening exercises to help with the chondromalacia. Don't do any knee bending exercises as this will just aggravate your symptoms. Just do straight leg raises and NO knee bending. The undersurface of the patella will just keep rubbing and rubbing when you do any bending type exercises. When the quads are nice and strong then you can do the other stuff you want to do.

Good luck with the skiing. If you're really smart you should get at the very least accident insurance and some kind of health insurance. What happens if you really hurt yourself and you end up in the hospital. My kids don't play sports unless they join a club or league that provides some kind of insurance in the event of an injury. Fortunately they are insured but I wouldn't think of them playing anything unless they belonged to an organization that has accident insurance for any and all medical problems. My kids played soccer and the soccer league provided them insurance when they practiced or played on the field. You should join a league that does snow boarding. At the very least they give you insurance as part of joining the league. Again, good luck!  (+ info)

I broke both of my legs right above my ankles two years ago. My right leg still gives ma a lot ot problems.?

I snapped the tendon in the same leg. My docotr did an MRI a month ago and this is what she had to say. What does it mean?

The findings are that there is a moderate sized defect in the dome or weight bearing surface of the talas below the tibia.
It would be pretty bad if it actually went thru into the joint.
Let me refer you to Podiatry and get their opinion on whether or not you need anything done to the cyst.

* IMPRESSION **:
9 mm medial talar dome subarticular cystic focus adjacent reactive
edema without evidence of overlying dome irregularity or chondral
defect, consistent with osteochondritis dissecans.
Lateral ankle tendons unremarkable.

I think the cyst came after the break. I didn't have problems with my ankle prior to the broken legs.
----------

Your doctor who interpreted the MRI is basically saying there's evidence of a condition call Osteochondritus Dissecans. Could be the previous break in your right ankle pinched a nerve, or something else is causing an artery that carries blood to that area to be blocked. The loss of blood weakens the bone and causes the cartilage to loosen between your bone joints, the bones scrap together, therefore your ankle hurts. The bones in the ankle area that scrap together over time causes one of them to form a small hole (i..e cavity), within that hole a fluid fill sac has form (called a cyst). The cyst is dangerous because it may cause infection.

Treatment options are a) relax, stay off your feet and let it heal on its own, b) surgery to remove the cyst, to fill the cavity, to remove/bypass the blockage in the artery  (+ info)

Osteochondritis Dissecans?

Does anyone know how long Osteochondritis Dissecans surgrey on the ankle is? i might have to get it and was wondering how many hours is takes and if its an inpatiant or outpaitiant.
thanks
----------

This isn't a question that we can answer for you. Do the the nature of osteochondritis dissecans, each surgery is unique. Talk to your doctor. Ask him/her how long they think it will take and if the surgery will be inpatient or out.

Good luck!  (+ info)

----------

Without knowing a little more recommending a treatment would be hard.. Normally OCD appears at the knee but could happen at almost any joint. Conservative treatment seems the best approach but without knowing more I couldn't recommend anything. I have listed several web pages that you might find helpful.

Osteochondritis Dissecans?

I had surgery on my knee not quite 2 years ago for this condition & had 3 "loose bodies" removed... The result was great and made my knee 100% better... but now my knee is starting to hurt and pop again just like it did b4 my surgery... could I have more "loose bodies" or is this normal??

-I also have "chondromalacia Patella"(sp?) in that knee
----------

First off the spelling is good. Second, there is always that chance. Xrays of your knee should show most loose bodies in your knee. There are several other things that could be causing the popping, so seeing the doctor that did your previous surgery whould be your best plan of action at this time.  (+ info)

I have some knee issues and would LOVE some opinions?

My knee has hurt for a few years, and i never had an injury to it, sometimes it feels like its gonna go out or go backwards, it gets very stiff and pops frequently when i move it. It clicks and catches and locks and gives way and is very uncomfortable. I have lost 20 lbs to relieve the pain but has not helped. I tried to go to webmd.com and find out some info but every diagnosis is from and injury which i have not had. The only one that kinda sounds like it is osteochondritis dessican, but i dont really have limited movement...ANY help would be greatly appriciated...
I have had an xray and it came back normal
----------

You didn't mention your age or actual weight which does relate to the issue.

The cartilage in your knee joint is showing signs of wear. You don't always have to suffer a traumatic injury to injure cartilage. Being overweight will do it. Eventually the cartilage will wear away resulting in a bone on bone problem.

Having your knee lock up IS limited movement.

First chance you get, see an orthopaedic doctor.

Good luck!  (+ info)
