Knee Injury?

I was just informed by and orthopedic doctor that i (16 years old) have a torn lateral miniscus, tibial stress fracture, and osteochondritis dessicans (OCD). I will need a minor surgery of drilling the bone to help cure the OCD. I have not played sports for 2 weeks since the massive swelling began. Any idea when i will be back into sports and active? Is there any long term problems that might arise because of this?
----------

Well really you have 3 issues going on here.

The menisucs, I would assume they are also doing some surgery on. If it is torn then depending on where the tear is, they will either reattach it or cut off the part that is torn. This will vary because some of the meniscus has blood flow and some does not. The parts that do not have a blood supply will not heal on it's own which is why they tend to do a menisectomy so the torn part won't catch or flap in the joint area. Being sewn back together in a meniscal repair, these can take between 4-6 months to return to play depending on severity. If they just cut part of it off, those are faster to recovery, but the return is more dependent on patient discomfort. When you lose part of the cushionning you can't always return to full activity (but this is NOT the case all the time so don't worry).
**though you didn't mention this as part of your surgical procedures which is odd unless it is very small and they believe it will resolve on it's own (though usually they put you in a straight leg brace for this)

The stress fracture usually takes about two weeks to start resolving, but once again, it is based more on patient/athlete tolerance than anything else. Stress fractures are caused by over use, so the best thing to do is take a few weeks off, ice and use anti inflammatories. Sometimes a compression wrap such as an ace bandage can help as well. Also look at the shoes you are wearing if they are supportive and if you have flat or high arched feet, those can also add to the problem and you should be getting shoes designed for your foot type or some sort of orthotic insert to correct biomechanics of the foot/lower leg.

OCD, they are probably trying to increase blood flow to the area, this is why they would drill into the bone, cause some injury to the tissue to help facilitate healing of the lesion. This will hopefully help the lesion resolve. This can also take months, I would guess 3-4+ but can't give you an exact answer.

The best bet is to just keep in good contact with your doctor and make sure if and when you have surgery you keep up with your physical therapy and do your own rehab at home too. The better and more determined you are for increasing your strength, balance and flexibility on your own, the greater your recovery will be. Now with saying that, don't do any exercises that your health care providers do NOT reccomend.

Long term problems- arthritis, but if everything heals quickly and there isn't a lot of damage, you should be okay. Overtime as we age we do have to modify our activites somewhat though because damage to meniscus and cartilidge can lead to future issues but most older adults regardless of previous injury have wear and tear on their joints.

Good luck with the surgery!  (+ info)

OCD in the knees??

I recently had surgery last October on my left knee because I have Osteochondritis Disecans. I have pain from time to time. Does anyone have it to? If so, How do u sooth the pain?
----------

OMG!!! I never thought I would meet somebody who had this, too. I had OCD in my left knee for 20 years. I just had surgery recently in Chicago. I had dead bone, no cartilage, etc. It was painful, the surgery was more painful, but now I'm doing fine. I don't know what type of surgery you had, but my surgeon grew a sample of my cartilage in a lab, he cut the dead bone out of my knee and replaced all of my missing cartilage with brand new cartilage. He even filled the missing bone section with cartilage. Really cutting edge surgery. Sometimes in the winter, I have aches and pains. I used Advil and ice. It never hurts that bad though. If yours still hurts, check out Doctor Brian Cole out of Rush Presbyterian St. Lukes Hospital in and around Chicago, Illinois. He is one of the best in the country, which is why I went to him. Even if you already had a surgery, he will look you over. He invented the new type of surgery I had. I limped for 20 years up until the surgery. He's great.  (+ info)

Whats wrong with my knee?? Long history?

Ok. I have a long background with my knee. 2 years ago i got diagnosed with osteochondritis in my knee. they did surgery, but when they went in to fix it, they found i had "plica" too along with some shredded cartilage. they took out the plica and cleaned up the knee a little but never fixed my osteochondritis.

2 years later, my knee feels and sounds disgusting. every time i bend it, it crackles and sounds like rice crispies lol. i can bend down, but it is very hard to get my knee completely bent. and when i do, it hurts alot when i stand up. i dont know what to do. im very active but i feel like this is holding me back. it has gotten progressivly worse in the last 2 months? what could it be??

I'm a 17 year old with arthritis in my knee so i know where you are coming from.
go to the doctor and tell him what wrong because it could be serious.  (+ info)

why does my knee still hurt after 5 weeks of injury and mri sees no problem?

i injured my right knee about 4 years ago, playing football, i was stuck on the outside of my knee. i rested it for two weeks and its seemed ok, but loose, like it would pop out of socket at times, it would only hurt momentarily. i hurt it again a year later. i jumped up and i felt like my knee popped out and went back in when i landed. had xray done, nothing wrong, only fluid in knee. another two weeks and i was ok. occasionally i feel this looseness in my knee when i jump, stepping off a ladder, and sometimes i feel like my knee is twisting inward. recently, i sprained my knee again just by coming up from the ground after i picked something up. my knee felt like it twisted inward as i pushed up on it. i felt a snap in my leg and it locked up. i had 9 days pt following injury, felt progress first 3 wks. and no improvement after. i felt pain in the inner side of my knee cap. i had fluid again in my knee. i would feel heavy pressure behind the knee. i cant straighten my leg. my feel a clicking when i bend my knee forward. and it hurts when i pull in with my heel. after three weeks, i can walk much better, but after thirty minutes or more, i get pain and start limping. its been 5 weeks now, i just got mri report says study performed in the coronal, axial and sagittal planes with t1 and t2 weighting
-no evidence of fracture or dislocation
-no osteochondritis dissecans or bone marrow edma
-ant. and post. cruciate ligaments intact
-quad and patellar tendons normal
-no evidence of medial or lateral collateral ligament tear
-no meniscal abnormalities
-no popliteal masses
-no chondromalacia patella
impression-nomal mri of knee
i still feel knee is unstable. cant straighten leg fully and still hurts when pulling in with heel, still have clicking in knee. knee feels uncomfortable and slight pain at times until i feel it crack( like cracking my knuckles)then feels better. doc says knee is taking longer to heal than usual and nothing seems wrong. i researched my symptoms and sounds like i have problem with my meniscus, even therapist said it to be very likely. but mri says ok what else could it be?

Knee Problems?

So, the other day I went to sit down on my recliner [w/ my left leg sorta bent so i was like half-ass indian style] Anwyays... I don't know what I did, I don't know if my knee cap popped out of place, but something happened & there was sudden unbearable pain in my knee joint and I didnt want to move cuz it hurt so bad, but after a second i sorta moved my leg just a little bit & it like popped back or something & I stood up & it hurt to walk just for a couple mins afterwards till I I stretched & walked it off, but oh my gosh I cannot even explain how bad it hurt! Has this ever happened to any of you??

ps: I had surgery on my knee about a year and a half ago cuz I had "osteochondritis dissecans" and "chondromalacia" [sp?] so i didn't know if maybe those had anything to do with it?
----------

I agree with the first part of what the other person said: your past history is most likely not related to what happened to you the other day. Osteochondritis dissecans has to do with the cartilage on the ends of your bones wearing down and possibly producing a loose body. Chondromalacia is the backside of your kneecap irritating what's underneath it.

I also doubt that you dislocated your kneecap. When that happens, unless if you're significantly overweight, you'll know it VISUALLY. If you ever see a dislocated kneecap, you'll know it.

Your knee probably "locked up" on you, where it feels like it's stuck or caught on something, but if you force it, it moves past that point, but it hurts a lot afterwards. This is usually caused by torn meniscus (which is the cushion between the bone above your knee (femur) and below your knee (tibia). Sometimes, this problem solves itself, sometimes, it doesn't. It depends on how and where the tear is. Even if it doesn't heal, if it doesn't cause you too much problem, you can live with it. Give it a few weeks and see how it feels then before going to the doc.

Has this happened to me? Many times.. sometimes worse than other times. I played volleyball and put my knees into weird positions out of a bad habit in my form. I've never gotten to the point where I need to go to the doctor since it's always gotten better for me (not necessarily true for everybody though).

Here's some quick info on it:

I have some knee issues and would LOVE some opinions?

I have some knee issues and would LOVE some opinions?
My knee has hurt for a few years, and i never had an injury to it, sometimes it feels like its gonna go out or go backwards, it gets very stiff and pops frequently when i move it. It clicks and catches and locks and gives way and is very uncomfortable. I have lost 20 lbs to relieve the pain but has not helped. I tried to go to webmd.com and find out some info but every diagnosis is from and injury which i have not had. The only one that kinda sounds like it is osteochondritis dessican, but i dont really have limited movement...ANY help would be greatly appriciated...

Additional Details
Yeah, I go on the 31st, I am just trying to get some info as to what the problem may be...or honesty i dont even know if thats normal...

I HAVE NOT HAD AN INJURY!!
----------

You didn't have any catastrophic injury you remember. You probably fell on your knees many times as a child and you are getting arthritis from that - perhaps. Try taking 2 Aleve or ibuprophen every day for a week or so and see if that helps. You might need to go see a doctor about it to get stronger medicine if that doesn't help.  (+ info)

Blood test: 84.3 SEGS, 11.3 Lymphocytes, 138 ALKP, 126 GGTP, 119 SGOT, 177 SGPT, 222 LDH, 20 CO2. Diagnosis?

Have had two CTSCANS showing multiple lymphnodes in the .7 -1.6 cm range (no change between scans 3 months apart.) However, 5 months ago lymphocytes were at 20 and only one liver function was slightly higher than normal range. Have history of abdominal pain, but it has recently gotten worse to nausea and major indigestion but stool is normal to dark - very rarely green. Upper right abdomen tender. History of moderate alcohol use and use of tylenol and other pain pills for osteochondritis issues. No visual jaundice, and no history of risky sexual practices and drug use... Anybody?
I am seeing a doctor and have been referred to a specialist. Just seeing what all you think.
----------

Please disregard the comment about doctors being the only ones that can interpret lab tests. As a matter of fact, doctors rely on people like myself, a medical technologist to do all the work of interpreting them and then notifying the docs when results are so abnormal as to be life threatening.

That said, here is what is going on. You have some serious liver issues. The hematology results are in reference to the relative percentages of the different types of white blood cells in your blood. It isn’t in reference to the amount. The numbers I see for your tests are COMPLETELY normal, and I would not be concerned AT ALL about leukemia. If you saw anything like the following words on you hematology results, it would be cause for concern:

Bands
metameylocytes
meylocytes
promeylocytes
blasts (very serious situation for someone with cancer who should be immediately treated by a doctor)
prolymphocytes
smudge calls in high amounts on the blood smear
high white count
low HGB or HCT
PLT < 80
PLT > 700  (+ info)
