What foods are good for optic neuritis?

large doses of methyl-prednisolone
If you have optic neuritis, you should be in hospital or on supervised high doses of steroids until it goes away. You can have it for as little as a week before you get permanent damage and lose your sight. If you have been diagnosed your doctor would have told you all this already  (+ info)

Any one ever have Optic Neuritis?

My husband was just diagnosed with Optic Neuritis and has lost about 60% of his vision in his left eye. He has an appointment an MRI do further testing, to determine what might be causing it.

Has anyone ever had or know of someone who has had this?

We have looked online but as you all know sometimes there is way to much info and always the worst case scenarios.
----------

I've dealt with many cases of it.
The key issue is, indeed, "to determine what might be causing it."
About 40% of cases are a single episode, with no proven underlying cause, and no recurrance, leading to varying degrees of recovery from little improvement through to so complete that only careful tests will show the eye once had a problem.
Few doctors will, most wisely, predict what the final outcome is likely to be.

If an underlying cause is traced the likelihood of recurrance and the degree of recovery will very much depend on this diagnosis.
The "elephant in the room" is the question of multiple sclerosis which does have long term health implications.
MS is not infrequently detected though presenting with a case of optic neuritis. But there are a range of other possibilities apart from the 40% mentioned above. For examples Lupus, or reaction to Chloramphenicol, (an antibiotic).
Once the treatment of the eye with steroids is underway, everything else waits on diagnostic tests.

Best wishes for your husband.  (+ info)

Is optic Neuritis curable? if yes, How soon? If not, will the patient become blind?

Recently, my wife was diagnosed optic neuritis and treated with steriod. The doctor stopped the 12 doses of steroid and told us that it will be healed by itself later on. But at the back my mind there is doubts because until now there is no progress. The disease is 2 weeks old.

I am 18 now and had optic neuritis when I was only 10 years old. The doctor is right. It will heal on it's own. I had it for 3-4 months. During that time my vision in the eye I had it in progressively got worse, but eventually started to get better. I still have permanent damaage to my optic nerve and even with glasses my sight in that eye cannot be fixed. With both of my eyes open though I don't really notice and have 20/20 vision with both of my eyes open with my contacts.

Just trust your doctor and keep seeing him so he can make sure that everything that is going on is normal.  (+ info)

2nd time optic neuritis help?

I've had optic neuritis before, but I can't really remember how quickly it happened. For the last 3 days I've been having that same pain as before, but I'm not quite sure my vision is blurry yet (it usually is already). Is it possible for optic neuritis to start with pain before the bluriness or to just only have pain?

Anyone heard of Optic Neuritis?? Anyone Experienced/Can Tell Me What it is?

I have Bilateral Optic Neuritis (ON)
I have no sign of MS...
I'm having the same symptoms of when I got it the first time, so could I get it again??

Thank You x
----------

It is an inflammation of the optic nerves in both eyes. It can be idiopathic or due to a neurological disease. In other words, sometimes no cause is ever found. Somewhere around 40% of the people who get it do develop multiple sclerosis or some other neurological disease within ten to fifteen years.

I had optic neuritis as a presenting symptom of MS, and it involved a lot of pain. Of course not everyone experiences pain with it. Usually it happens in just one eye rather than both eyes and begins to resolve itself in two to three weeks. However, it can result in reduced color vision, poor night vision, permanent blurred vision or blindness. Yes, you could get it again. Most of us only have a single occurrence of it, but that is not always the case obviously.  (+ info)

Hi, has anyone suffered from Optic neuritis?

I was diagnosed with Optic neuritis 3 months ago after going completely blind in my left eye. I know about the condition and possible links with MS etc. 3 months in i only have about 60 percent vision in my left eye with very little periferal vision. Has anyone suffered this condition and what were your lasting effects or did you make a complete recovery? Thanks in advance for your answers.

Mercifully, not I.

i have Optic neuritis what are the chances of it coming back and me having ms?

Your chances of developing MS in the next ten years are 38% according to a study done by the Mayo Clinic. Did they do an MRI to look for the lesions that are indicative of multiple sclerosis? If they did an MRI and found even one lesion your chances of developing MS are 56%. Are they going to treat your optic neuritis with steroids? If they do your chances of developing MS are greater according to studies. The chances of the optic neuritis coming back if it is not the result of MS are minimal if you do not have or develop MS.  (+ info)
