In the world.

What can I do about a sciatic nerve or numbness in my leg?

I've been having this numbness in my front leg for quite some time. It gets worse when I am in a sitting or standing position. Could I get permanent nerve damage from this? What should I do about this? TIA for any help!
----------

I'd go to an orthopedic specialist - they can figure out what is wrong and if necessary send you for an MRI (someone suggested an Xray, but if it is indeed sciatica, an Xray won't help as disks won't show up). A chiropractor will try to treat you but it may not be the treatment you need - chiroprators are not MDs and I wouldn't risk further injury or aggravation by going to someone who may not be qualified to deal with it. Trust me, I have had back problems for 20 years, finally fixed after two surgeries. You DON'T want it to get worse if it is, in fact a disk problem. That said, most sciatica goes down the backs of your legs. Do get it checked out.  (+ info)

How to differentiate between patient with olfactory nerve problem or with malinger?

How can a doctor know that the patient is malingering or if he/she truly have an olfactory nerve problem?
----------

I'm not a doctor yet, but I would suggest testing them with some really noxious odor that they would not be able to pretend they don't smell. Or have them come into a room, and have the room flooded with said noxious odor when they are by themselves, but record them or secretly observe them to see if they react since no one is around. Some people vomit just from the smell of vomit, feces, dead fish, etc. If they don't see it, how else would they be able to react without smelling it? Good luck!

Can they taste food? Ask them what foods they have been eating lately, but try to disguise what you're looking for - people who cannot smell cannot taste much, either.  (+ info)

What is moderate spondylosis, and can it cause nerve pain in the feet?

I'm still trying to come up with answers for my burning, tingling, painful feet, the MRI says no definite nerve root effacement is identified. Does this mean the foot thing is something totally diffrent, do you think i need a podiatrist, rather then a neurologist?
----------

A spondylosis can cause nerve pain in the feet. Your pain may be compression on the spinal cord itself. Degenerative changes such as that with spondylosis can cause a spinal stenosis that can also cause nerve pain. What things make your foot symptoms worse and what makes it better? Feel free to e-mail me and we can get a better idea what type of doctor you should be seeing.  (+ info)

What makes certain diseases more likely to be frequent and widespread epidemics?

like cholera, the flu, dengue fever, and the plague. there's a list of epidemics on wikipedia and i'd like to know what those diseases have to make them so popular (in relation to deaths/occurences/etc) throughout history.
Thank you.

Interesting, isn't it? These diseases are living right alongside humans. Humans and these diseases grew up together - evolved together - perhaps we're dependent upon one another in some mystical way. (Read "Guns, Germs and Steel" J. Diamond).

So on the day you don't enforce the health laws (as we often don't in these recent times of republican "deregulation"), these diseases wait in the wings to step up and start killing people - we just saw this with the salmonella in the peanut butter.

Li'l Bush killed the food inspectors - the money had to go to his rich friends instead for more bottles of champagne. And now people are dead from this - and we're damned fortunate it wasn't worse.  (+ info)

What surgery for genitofemoral nerve entrapment?

I had hernia surgery eight months ago and have had chronic testicular and thigh pain since then. I've completed all conservative treatment efforts. A recent nerve block appears to indicate that the problem (which causes both shooting thigh pain and testicular pain/sensitivity) lies in the genitofemoral nerve.

On the internet, there appear to be a few different approaches to dealing with problems with a specific nerve.

What type of surgery would you suggest? I live in the Washington DC area (not far from Baltimore either), so I'm pretty sure that every type of surgeon is within about 30 miles of me. For starters, there's Georgetown and George Washington in DC and the Dellon Institute in Baltimore.

But I have no idea what the best approach is. (Cryoablation instead? Micronerve surgery? Cutting one nerve? Cutting all three nerves in the area? Something else?) Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you.

This is not the place to find an answer to your questions. Please see your doctor. He or she will be able to set you on the right course.

What sort of diseases might cause slight limps but no deformity of the leg?

I need to know of a few diseases that a child might catch that would render her with a slight limp for the rest of her life, but no physical deformity.

Thanks.
----------

The most frequent cause of limping in an otherwise normal youngster is the childhood disorder "transient synovitis of the hip." It is presumed that a virus produces inflammation in the lining of the hip joint since most affected children had a mild cold before they suddenly started limping. This self-limited condition usually occurs in boys between 2 to 12 years of age (average 6 years).
_____________________________________________

Legg-Calve-Perthes disease is a rare condition that always has to be considered when a child limps. It develops when, for unknown reasons, something happens to interrupt the blood supply to the top of the thigh (femoral) bone. This results in destruction of bone’s top causing pain when the child walks. Boys ages four to ten are five times more likely to be affected than girls. X-rays of he hip may be normal at first but repeated studies and bone scans make the diagnosis apparent.
______________________________________________

Another cause of limp in children is "slipped capital femoral epiphysis." For unknown reasons the top of the thigh (femoral) bone slides into an abnormal position causing an abnormal fit of the hip joint. It is most frequently seen in overweight male teenagers (10-15 years of age). There is often a history of slight injury and pain may be first felt at the knee, even though the condition afflicts the hip.
