Cerebral palsy and myoclonus?

my wife has CP. She was a preemie breach birth. She also has Bi-polar disorder. She is on Lithium 300mg caps--3 caps AM, 4 Caps HS, Depakote ER 250mg tabs--3 tabs PM, and Effexor ER 75mg caps--3 caps AM. She takes the depakote for sleep. In the recent months her myoclonus is increasing, and her stamina is also decreasing. Her shaking is so bad that now she needs help with drinking and eating. Can the meds cause that or can her CP get worse as she age?
----------

Have her meds changed? That's the first place I'd consider.

I know next to nothing about CP. All I can do is share my experience on these meds. Maybe something will be useful. Just remember, each person responds differently.

Lithium can cause tremor, it's a common side effect. I only get a slight one in my left hand when I am dehydrated or something like an underlying body one when my blood pressure is real high (hard to describe). I have a friend who says it can magnify anything underneath for her. These two are abstract, non-medical descriptions. Not really sure how to describe.

Effexor made me shakey, but it also made me manic.

Depakote just makes my hair fall out while making me hungry... and my brain loves it, so I deal with the side effects.

Not sure if that helps at all.  (+ info)

Anyone diagnosed with Myoclonus-muscle jerking. Let me know how you are doing and on what,if any, meds. marlyne

Have had this for some months and medication I am taking is not that much help. Mine is sleep related which is hilarious since I have severe insomnia-wide awake for at least 2 nights in a row and yet function daytime with NO grogginess and people tell me they cannot understand how I can be so up! I am experimening ,in a safe way, of course, to determine if this is caused by low blood sugar (dibetis). Life can sure seem like a yo yo experience, but at least it isn't boring! Any help is appreciated. God bless Marlyne B

I've been having a burden with hypnagogic myoclonus. Does anyone have any advice for me? personal experience?

This has become a huge burden for me. Judging by my symptoms, I'm assuming it's hypnagogic myoclonus. also called, sleep starts, and hypnic jerks. Every night that I start to go to sleep I either twitch and it wakes me right back up, or I have a very short dream that scares me half to death and I wake up. But i'm not asleep, just barely about to fall asleep. has anyone else had this happen to them? or any advice to make it go away? can I get some pills or something??? It's getting really old
----------

ya, i do that a lot. for me i have noticed that i do it when i am especially tired or stressed. i don't really have any advice other than, try not to think about it, it only makes you stressed which worsens it. good luck.  (+ info)

What is dx-myoclonus???

My sister was diagnosed as having it and I'm clueless. Help!
----------

brief, involuntary twitching of a muscle or a group of muscles. It describes a symptom (as opposed to medical sign) and, generally, is not a diagnosis of a disease. The myoclonic twitches or jerks are usually caused by sudden muscle contractions; they also can result from brief lapses of concentration. Contractions are called positive myoclonus; relaxations are called negative myoclonus. The most common time for people to encounter them is while falling asleep (hypnic jerk), but myoclonic jerks are also a sign of a number of neurological disorders. Hiccups are also a kind of myoclonic jerk specifically affecting the diaphragm.

Myoclonic jerks may occur alone or in sequence, in a pattern or without pattern. They may occur infrequently or many times each minute. Most often, myoclonus is one of several signs in a wide variety of nervous system disorders such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and some forms of epilepsy.

In almost all instances in which myoclonus is caused by CNS disease it is preceded by other symptoms; for instance, in CJD it is generally a late-stage clinical feature that appears after the patient has already started to exhibit gross neurological deficits

Myoclonus may develop in response to infection, head or spinal cord injury, stroke, brain tumors, kidney or liver failure, lipid storage disease, chemical or drug poisoning, or other disorders

Myoclonus can occur by itself, but most often it is one of several symptoms associated with a wide variety of nervous system disorders

Treatment of myoclonus focuses on medications that may help reduce symptoms. The drug of first choice to treat myoclonus, especially certain types of action myoclonus, is clonazepam, a benzodiazepine

Dosages of clonazepam usually are increased gradually until the patient improves or side effects become harmful. Drowsiness and loss of coordination are common side effects. The beneficial effects of clonazepam may diminish over time if the patient develops a tolerance for the drug.  (+ info)

Take some Aspirin with some White Zinfandel.

I sometimes have asthma attacks triggered in midwinter after I lay down at night, caused by reflux. I also have myoclonus jerks, and it usually happens if I have a cold, and have been exercising out in the cold. Any good web sites on this?

my dad had the same problem with the acid reflux trigering his asthma, and the only thing the doc told him her could do is take Prilosect OTC and try to sleep in a upright position, also he told him to try to cut down on acidy foods. good hope you start to feel better.  (+ info)

medical question please help, Any answer is exceptible?

My gf might have myolclonus (http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/myoclonus/detail_myoclonus.htm) and the medicine that could help cure it warns against people who having trouble using breathing, and she has asthma to. Any help or websites or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you!
----------

her neurologist should be able to decide if the medication at effects breathing is best, or if another drug or combination will work. sometimes, sorry to say, we have to take chances of risk/benefit- is the risk of more asthma worth taking the drug? perhaps changing or increasing asthma medications in combo w/ the other drug will work. best of luck  (+ info)
