Sores in the mouth can be cancerous lesions but are rarely seen in the young outside of tobacco chewers. More often than not it is related to a virus and will get better on its own, but can be related to fungus or bacteria (Strep, Gonorrhea, etc.) that would benefit from treatment. Thrush may be a harbinger of diabetes or an immune problem.  (+ info)
