Its a blood borne pathogen. A monkey bite or contact with monkey blood would have done the job.
As for why it wasn't an issue up until the 1980's, viruses mutate and evolve just like all other living things. It happened to mutate into something transmissible and deadly to humans.

Is it reasonable to test drugs on animals if the cause is to help people suffering from incurable diseases?
I saw an advert on TV showing a monkey in a cage. They asked whether it was right to test a drug on him. I said "No". Then they asked whether it was okay if it would help a man in a wheelchair recover from an incurable disease. It was a difficult one but I decided the answer was still no. What are your thoughts on this - is it right to swap one life for another? Do you believe that all animals are inferior to humans and that it is okay to carryout experiments on them?

I totally disagree with animal testing. They do not only use unadoptable animals they use specially bred dogs, maily beagles. These animals have a miserable existence and some suffer abuse from the lab technicians if they don't tow the line i.e. allow blood to be taken from the vein in their necks without struggling. I have suffered a great deal of trauma from what I have experienced first hand of this practice. It's no good saying only necessary experiments can be done as this is just too ethically difficult to decide so a blanket 'permission' is given to the drugs companies. Each study uses about 50 dogs who only stay alive for 6 months and are then all euthanised. Some of the technicians find this funny....I have seen this! These animals respond to love .... I tried to give it to them....but it didn't save them, probably made it worse for them to accept the cruelty and suffering. (

There are probably millions more disorders in animals, but we can't communicate like them and develop a sense of normalcy in animals. Also, keep in mind that humans are some of the most complex animals on the planet (genetically). (
