Does anyone get migraine with aura while on hormonal birth control?

What kind of birth control works for people with this condition?
----------

Migraine is a relatively common side effect when on OC. However studies have shown that if it is accompanied with aura, these women have a higher chance of getting blood clots when on OC. This can be dangerous leading to stroke, heart attacks and deep vein thrombosis. The increase in blood coagulability increases with the content of estrogen in the OC. So you have several options.
1) Go on low dose OC with estrogen of 20mcg, but effectiveness of the OC may be compromised
2) Go for progestogen only contraceptive like Minipill or injectables like Norplant or intrauterine devices like Minera
3) Go for IUD, but this is not advisable if you have pelvic inflammatory disease
4) Other modes of contraceptives...condoms, spermicides, femidoms
Hope that helps!  (+ info)

Is this a migraine blind spot / aura or just random?

A couple of weeks ago in a lesson at school, I couldn't concentrate as out of the corner of one of my eyes, my vision was blurred. it looked like when your eyes are watering, but they weren't. My eyes were really sensitive to the lights so it was hard not to squint. and I did have a really bad headache for a while that day. But by the end of the day , it was gone. Was it a migraine? and was it an aura or blind spot?

it sounds just like an aura with the migraine following  (+ info)

Birth control pills and migraine with an aura?

My wife experiences migraine headaches accompanied with an aura (visual disturbance). a while back Planned Parenthood told her she could no longer take regular birth control pills because of this.

She is on some other low/no (?) horomone pills and hates them. She claims they make her skin break out a little (which is a small price to pay for not getting pregnant I think). She is going crazy trying to find something else, coming up with all these natural calander charting methods that just don't sound very effective and would make me extremly paranoid.

She has also looked into a copper IUD thing and is finding all these horror stories about them.

I can't find any info about effective alternatives other than calander/temprature things that sound pretty sketchy to me.

Anyone have any suggestions or been through this before?

The web site for the plastic IUD thing (minera?) makes it sound like you need to already have a child for it to be an option. Is this true?
----------

You SHOULD have at least one child before using an IUD (because the uterus is a little more relaxed after childbirth). But even then it's no guarantee. I had my IUD perforate my uterus and had to have it surgically removed.

There are a LOT of pills out there; but if she's having problems with the ones she's tried, she really has only 2 options: keep trying different ones every 3 months till she finds one she likes (I tried two dozen!), or go off the pill entirely. And I agree...acne is a small price to pay for peace of mind!

There's the shot; she may or may not like that...some women don't.

There's the Nuva Ring...it may be better since the hormones are right where they need to be (AT the uterus) so less is in the blood stream.

I don't recommend the patch....similar problems to the pill.

Then of course there are barrier methods. I used a diaphragm but got pregnant; I know of a LOT of people that LOVE their diaphragms however. Its something to look into.

Finally, there is a new barrier method that touts a higher efficacy rating than the diaphragm called Lea's Shield.

Combine the barrier methods (with which you would also us a spermicide) with the rhythm methods (calendar charting and BBT), and you could conceivably have a pretty safe sex life.

Your wife (and YOU) should talk to her doctor about these and other options. Good luck.  (+ info)

is it possible to have a migraine without aura?

ive had migraines with aura for about 10 years and yesterday i didn't get the aura but i did get the ranging headache the nausea and the numbness i was wondering if this has happen to anyone else
----------

Sure does. Begin by giving up or cutting down on your fav foods (allergy is a big headache -causer). A GOOD ear-acupuncturist can stop migraines in 4 visits; finding the cause is the only cure.  (+ info)

I have been getting the migraine aura every day this week....what's up?

I have only been getting flashing in my eyes like I usually get before a migraine, but I haven't actually been getting a migraine...Why is this happening?
----------

Claire i have answered you i think.
pl see what suits you.
If you are in cold country use all warm things.
Pl try cold water bath and observe if in hot country, if pain increases use warm.
If you have cough/cold body hot water bath will help.
Massage and exercise in front of morning sun is good thing, pl try.
Pl try simple acupressure given below for immediate relief.
If it fails you will have to go for Acupuncture.

There is hardly any medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for RA, OA, Back ache, Ear ache/ringing, Stomach ache and almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.

Acidity, WORRY, sadness, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation; drug side effects, stress, bad smell, TV & COMPUTER SOMETIMES, Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy, BODY CONSTITUTION etc are their causes.
None of them can be treated with medicine.
Our 100% success in treating migraine &H/A confirms it.

Acupuncture is the best treatment.
I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see.

Pain killers don't treat the pain but we loose the sense of pain for some time; in that duration our body itself treats sometime and credit goes to meds.
The useless drugs have tremendous power of side effects like liver/kidney failures, ulcer, inflammation of intestines and lot more.

Avoid late sleeping if possible; worry, tension, spicy foods, sour fruits, stale bakery foods, SMOKING and alcohole.

Sweet foods, COCOANUT WATER,sweet fruits like dates, milk, rice, SPROUTS, SALADS and good sleep will help if cough is not there.

But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves' juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it is very strong.

If it is acute pl search a painful point (with round tipped pen/jimmy) 3-6 mm behind your thumb nail and press it, H/A will disappear within 30 seconds.

For forehead/eye pain the points are in front of nails on the finger tips or 3-7 mm below.

It may disappear naturally too.

Few months ago, I had a migraine with aura.?

It's been about 3 to 4 months since I last had it but that was the only time and I never had it again. Does that mean I don't have migraine? because I researched and found out that I can only be diagnosed with migraines if I have at least 2 migraine attacks with aura. I only had one.
----------

The episode you had sounds an awful lot like a migraine to me. I"ve been having migraines (w/ aura) for years along w/ vomiting and a splitting headache. Sometimes ---but not always-- I'll have a seizure along with it.

If I were you I'd take the "wait & see" approach. Try to avoid things that might trigger an attack (e.g.
chocolate, processed meats, red wine, flashing lights, video games, etc.). Make sure you get plenty of sleep. If you get another episode, make an appointment w/ your doctor. They have prescriptions that can help you. Don't worry...you'll be O.K. :)  (+ info)

Aura Migraine? How much longer?

Ive had Aura Migraines now for about 20 years every sence I was 7. Now here recently Ive been haveing them more often. About four in 2 months or so, when I usually have them once every 3 to 6 months. I am just wanting to know how do you deal with your migraines, what medcation works the best, and when can I look forward to kicking them for good?
----------

i have had them too most of my life. i have been on preventative medications for the better part of 10 years, they have changed my life. it was easier to tell the dr the days i didnt have a headache than the days i did. i went from many a month to one every once in a while. i was diagnosed with atypical chronic migraine, in another words they have no idea what causes them. i have learned most of my triggers as artifical sweeteners, storm fronts (thats a hard one nothing i can do to change the weather). there are some bad ones that the dr can not even get to go away with high dose medications, they just go on their own. find a neurologist or a headache specialist, there are many new medications that really help. there are prevenatives, and abortives that are great. i wish i could tell you when they would go away,,,or how to get them to leave permenatly, i look forward to the day i could be migraine free, but for now i take my meds and go one day at a time.

keep a diary and see if you can pinpoint a trigger.  (+ info)

Migraine with Aura question?

Hi, I get migraines regularly. I get auras (visual disturbances) with them. Until now they have always just been a C-shaped sparkly thing on one side of my vision. This morning I got one, only the aura was on both sides of my vision, 2 C-shaped sparkly things mirroring each other. Has anyone else had this? Has anyone else had their migraine auras change after years of being pretty much the same? Thanks!
----------

i get visual disturbances in both eyes too, but it seems to be worse in the right eye. take something for pain as soon as this happens and it can usually keep the pain that follows from happening.  (+ info)

what can be a sign of a migraine attack about to happen? my 16 year old daughter suffered a severe headache?

starting friday afternoon and gradually got worse until 4am the next morning she was vomiting. the migraine started to slowly go and this morning is just left with a mild headache. are there signs before one happens? she doesn't see flashing lights or an aura, could there be a behaviour change or something like that? she has now been left with just dark rings under her eyes.
----------

im 13 , Ive suffered with severe migraine since i was 9 , Ive tried countless things , eg - chiropractor which did work for about a year, but they drifted back , i also tried acupuncture (not sure if correct spelling) and see my doctor every 3 months, ive been on countless tablets, but no then seems to work i think its something you will just grow out off
Make sure she drinks alot of water as dehydration can bring them on
No their is no real side effect of then , i also get rings under my eyes

Tho when i take a migraine , i get a drink and take a paracetamol / sulphedine. Get a pack over my head , go into a dark room , and put a fan to keep cool !  (+ info)

How do I know it's a migraine and not a stroke?

My grandmother had transient ischemic attacks (TIA), which are called mini-strokes. I was recently diagnosed with classic aura migraines after I had suffered tunnel vision, blind spots, numbness on one side of my face and hand and an intense two day long headache. How can I be sure that it was a migraine and not a stroke? Many of the symptoms are the same.
