Could my son have affects from meningitis that we didn't know about?

My son had meningococcal meningitis at 6 months old. He was diagnosed with hearing loss at 15, although in hind sight we should have known earlier. Should he be tested for other problems? I read about kidney damage and neurological problems, should he be tested or will problems already presented themselves?
----------

When there is damage to the kidneys, adrenal gland or heart, it typically occurs during the infection and the effects are usually apparent soon after. These types of problems would likely cause noticeable symptoms or be detected by a doctor during examinations, but minor problems of this nature might not be obvious with routine exams. A few tests might answer this question once and for all.

Neurological problems are much less predictable. If neurological damage occurred, there are several possible outcomes. Problems caused by the infection may eventually disappear, they may become permanent, or some problems may not surface until later if the injury affected aspects of the nervous system that had not fully developed at the time of the infection. It might be worthwhile to visit a neurologist that specializes in child development to see if monitoring is needed.  (+ info)

meningococcal meningitis.?

how do you get this horrible diesease?
----------

Sharing foods/drinks/cigarettes/eating utensils, being in crowded space (living in dorms and such), kissing, from being sneezed/coughed on, etc.

For more info, check out http://www.meningitis-angels.org as that organization is very active in spreading meningitis awareness and encouraging vaccinations and preventive measures. There are vaccinations available, but be aware that the vaccinations do not prevent you from ALL strains of meningitis, only a few specific strains.

Also, a lot of people may even carry the bacteria or virus in the very back of their nostrils, but they are not aware of this, and they may not even come down with meningitis.

I had HIB bacterial meningitis when I was 2 (it was common in the 1980's until the HIB vaccination was developed), and I got the bacteria off another child in daycare. I have no idea if that kid was ever sick with meningitis or not, but it sure nearly killed me.  (+ info)

is it necessary for college students to have meningitis shot?

What is meningococcal disease? do u think I should go and get a shot?
----------

Yes, it's always a good idea for college students to get the meningitis shot. Because you'll come into close contact with so many people you run a much higher risk of contracting it, and the pain of the shot and the money spent on it is well worth it when compared to the side effects of the actual disease.  (+ info)

what is the most life threatening form of meningitis?

i know the septicemia is the more life threatening but i believe there are different forms under that category? meningococcal and pneumococcal etc?

Bacterial meningitis
Bacterial meningitis is usually more serious than other forms. At least 50 types of bacteria can cause meningitis,  (+ info)

Meningitis-WHY don't people realize it is a symptom NOT a disease?

Seriously they keep pushing the "Meningitis Vaccine" and now on the news they keep saying "Were 500 people in this bar exposed to Meningitis?" That is like asking if 500 people were exposed to "fever"

Meningitis is inflammation of the meninges which can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or in some cases no known cause. The most common cause in children is Haemophilus influenzae. The so-called Meningitis vaccine for adults vaccinates against Meningococcal bacteria. Meningococcal can cause meningitis, but does not always cause meningitis and not all meningitis is cause by Meningococcal.

Why do we allow doctors, the government and the media to feed us such inaccurate propaganda all the time? What can we do to stop the media and government from continuing with this propaganda and inaccurate information?
Yes viral meningitis is scary, but the vaccine works against Meningococcal which is a BACTERIA.

So all of these people are getting the vaccine thinking they are safe. Who's fault will it be if some dies because they think they are safe and ignore the symptoms?

It really doesn't matter, does it?

It's like someone saying they have a stomach flu...when a flu is a respiratory infection.

In fact, the stomach flu one really irks me...so I can see where you're coming from. However, in the end...it's not really some conspiracy. Most people do not know the information that you do, and can only understand it when presented in a certain way. It really doesn't matter that your average person knows what you just described...all that matters is that health care professionals do. And hey, any health care professional worth their salt would not fall for this "propaganda."

The funny thing is the more you learn about medical conditions, treatments, etc....the more of these situations you will find that annoy you. The end however justifies the means, so this is not some grand conspiracy, but rather just an effort to get people vaccinated. Whether or not they know the full truth of the matter really isn't an issue, all that matters is that they are fighting that meningitis and stopping that nasty stomach flu ;)

And to the person that posted it's a free speech issue, you need to stop sleeping in civics/government, twit :p  (+ info)

Bacteria meningitis question?

pneumococcal infects the lungs and heart.  (+ info)

Is the meningococcal vaccine a three shot series?

I just got the meningococcal vaccine today before going off to college and was wondering if it was a series of shots. They told me, I think, but I was too terrified to listen to anything they were saying. Thanks so much in advance!
----------

No, it's once, and good for life - at least for now.  (+ info)

What is the testing procedure for meningitis?

If a college student comes down with meningitis, would all of the other students who took classes in those same buildings also have to get tested, even if they weren't experiencing any of the symptoms and if so, what exactly would that testing entail?
Where I go to college, something's going around that, according to my mother, who is a nurse, a possible precursor to meningitis and I was just wondering what exactly I would have to go through, as far as testing is concerned, should either any of my classmates or another person attending a class in one of the same buildings that I do comes down with meningitis.
----------

well someone would actually have to come down with meningitis for everyone to get tested. If you are concerned you can always ask the doc for a test anyway. The doctors usually look for a fever, rash, vomiting, headaches and check your lymph nodes for inflammation and ask you if you have any pain in your neck especially if you turn your neck up and down. If you have any of these early symptoms then they upgrade to a lumbar puncture to test for it. It isnt as painful as it used to be because they use anesthetics and has its risks but it can tell for sure if it is meningitis. Bacterial meningitis is treatable with antibiotics, viral meningitis has to run its course out of the body.  (+ info)
