Is Bacterial meningitis along enough to cause death?

Can you give me more details?

Definitely yes. Bacterial meningitis can rapidly lead to death if not promptly and properly treated. Even prompt antibiotic administration may not be enough to avoid death or permanent neurological complications.  (+ info)

Intravenous antibiotics are the course of treatment for bacterial meningitis. However, the class of antiobiotics used depends on the type of meningitis that you have because there is more than one type of bacterial meningitis (meningococcal, cryptococcal, pneumococcal, etc.)  (+ info)

Is the a cure for Bacterial Meningitis ?

It seem like once someone has it they die? If there no cure or treatment, why is it hard to treat?
----------

Treatment

Acute bacterial meningitis requires prompt treatment with intravenous antibiotics to ensure recovery and reduce the risk of complications. The antibiotic or combination of antibiotics that your doctor may choose depends on the type of bacteria causing the infection. Often, analyzing a sample of cerebrospinal fluid can help identify the bacteria. If you or your child has bacterial meningitis, your doctor may recommend a broad-spectrum antibiotic until he or she can determine the exact cause of the meningitis.

If you or your child has bacterial meningitis, your doctor may recommend treatments for brain swelling, shock, convulsions or dehydration. Infected sinuses or mastoids — the bones behind the outer ear that connect to the middle ear — may need to be drained. Any fluid that has accumulated between the brain and the membranes that surround it may also need to be drained or surgically removed.

Antibiotics can't cure most viral meningitis, but many cases improve on their own in a week or so without therapy. Treatment of mild cases of viral meningitis is usually with bed rest, plenty of fluids and over-the-counter pain medications to help reduce fever and relieve body aches. If the cause of your meningitis is the herpes virus, your doctor may also recommend an antiviral medication aimed at this virus.  (+ info)

How bad is bacterial meningitis?

My best friend has just been in the hospital for it and is is worrying me so much. Her boyfriend had to carry her out of biology today and ditched school to bring her to the hospital. (romantic or what?) Terrifying though! Anyways, i just got a call from her mom that said she has this. Is she going to be alright?
----------

It depends on what type of meningitis she has it it viral or bacterial if it is viral she has nothing to worry about and she will be fine if it is bacterial then she is in big trouble.
It all depends on how quick she got to the hospital for treatment.
There is a very high death rate with meningitis and the chances of surviving it with no ill effects is very low there is many different types of bacterial meningitis and some have a 35% death rate with a 35% permanent disability rate like deafness and blindness and there is only a 30% chance of the person being okay. But don't get too worked up about it until you find out what it is and then you can search the net to find out about that strand...

Good luck to your friend send her my love and tell her she is in my prayers  (+ info)

Bacterial Meningitis after brain surgery questions?

Hi all, my mother age 54 has recently had a tumour removed from her brain. 1 week after operation she got bacterial meningitis and has now had it for 2 whole weeks. How long will it take for it to go? Also is there risks associated with having the illness for so long??? Her wound is also infected & she had to have a csf drain but thats now been removed. Thanks for any advice.
----------

Bacterial meningitis is the worst of the other viral type. The bacteria probably entered through the wound b/c infection is bacterial growth. It sounds like they are having a hard time fighting it. Maybe something to do w/ drugs needed for the tumor are working against antibiotics for bacterial infection (or they're being cautious in use of antibiotics b/c of state of mom's health from tumor, or surgery). / I had this when I was around 8 y.o. They said my type would have killed me if I hadn't sought treatment in 72 hrs. So maybe there are weaker & stronger types. I entered hospital on 3rd day. Went into a coma they did not expect me to return from, when I awoke, they predicted I'd be a vegetable, when I spoke they assumed brain damage likely. My spinal tap was like milk & it should be clear. Ask doctors how your mom's spinal fluid looked, clear, cloudy, milky? Just to gage how pronounced the infection. Is she conscious? Does she respond to stimuli? These are good signs. / It sounds like they are taking the route with the least stress to your mother's over all condition. I think I was ill for 1-2 weeks. / I hope she is healed & home soon.  (+ info)

how long would it take for bacterial meningitis symptoms to show?

it's just a good friend of mine has it now. she was diagnosed yesterday. the last time I saw her was saturday and I haven't had any symptoms since then....but my mother keeps asking me anyway! how long would it take for the symptoms to start appearing?

Thanks
----------

If u have headache/light reactions/rashes/earache get yourself seen. look up the symptoms and make yourself familiar with them. Some meningitis' aren't ones you can catch. just keep an eye on your health and those around you and make sure you are all vigilant.  (+ info)

where do you go if you suspect that you or a family member has caught bacterial meningitis?

As its a contagious disease i wondered where a person would go to get it checked out by a doctor? would they get a doctor to visit them or would they go in to the hospital/Doctors surgery?

Thanks in advance
Don't worry i haven't got meningitis it is a health and social care assignment
----------

Meningitis isn't as catchy as most people think. Are you American? because its usually Americans that go over board on stressing about it being catchy. If you suspect meningitis in any way shape or form you should go to your ER don't bother with going to the dr's office because 90% of the time they will send you home saying you have the flu or another bug. Once you arrive at the ER you should tell them right away of you suspicions so you can have a proper check.

An example of it not being very catchy is that my son had bacterial meningitis when he was 19 months old he had spent 3 days at home with myself my husband and our 4 month old daughter non of us got it also i spent a further 3 weeks day and night in hospital with my son, not once doing anything to cover myself an i still didn't catch it. I know hundreds of people who have had meningitis and not one of them had caught it from another person or had given it to another person.

I wish you luck with your assignment but be sure to do as much research as you can and don't take advice from people who know nothing about meningitis.  (+ info)

where can i get a picture online that is a detailed picture of the structure of bacterial meningitis?

----------

Bacterial meningitis is a type of infection which is usually caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae or Neisseria meningitidis. Therefore if you want pictures of the specific bacteria then a simple google search will result in what you are looking for if you search using the bacteria name.  (+ info)
