Tooth Abscess or Mastoiditis? Should I wait until Monday to see a doctor or dentist?

Last week I started running a fever and had the worst headache I've ever had. I also threw up. So did my husband. For a few weeks, when I drink something cold, 2 teeth that have had root canals 9 years ago shoot sharp pains through. Also I had small muscle spasms in the same jaw. Last night my husband found a knot behind my right ear, on the mastoid bone I think. Nothing on the left ear. Had a small bump behind my left front tooth show up last night. By morning it felt like an abscess. Now it hurts to eat on the entire left side of my mouth. I've also been very dizzy and have a hard time finishing a thought or finding the right word. I'm only 29! Could this be an abscess that has advanced to my bloodstream or jaw bone? Is it an emergency or will it go away on its own? Should I see a doctor or dentist? Please advise. Happy Thanksgiving
----------

Both untreated dental abscesses and mastoiditis are potentially very serious conditions, especially mastoiditis. You should see someone before Monday.

Happy AMERICAN Thanksgiving. Up here in Canada we sensibly celebrate Thanksgiving in October.  (+ info)

Does anyone know what itching ears could mean?

I've always had a problem with one ear, mastoiditis which i see a specialist for now and agin, but now both ears really itch inside and have a bit of gunk come out, its really frustrating cause it just won't scratch, any ideas
i know it means my ears are itchy but it is normally and unslightly when i'm sat there itching them
----------

Since you already have a condition with one ear, you should check with your doctor. The itching and "gunk" could be caused by swimmer's ear, allergies, sinus or ear infections, or just built up ear wax.

You can buy over-the-counter ear cleaners if it's built up ear wax. But if it's not, and you use the cleaners, you could aggravate the condition. So it is best to check with your doctor before trying to treat it.

malignant melanoma and hot spots on bone scan?

i am stage 3 metastatic malignant melanoma suffering diplopia of the eye, mastoiditis and inflammation of the adenoid. My bone scan showed up hot spots on my knee and pelvis but i am suffering severe headaches with inflammation behind my ear too and have had a grommit put in my ear to drain the fluid. I want to know how long i will live as my diagnosis is looking grim. Serious answers only please as i am desperate. Is melanoma taking over my body?
----------

I am really really sorry, but nobody can tell you how long you have to live.
3rd stage is pretty bad, as you probably know, and sometimes melanoma moves very fast.
The best thing you can do is to get your affairs in order, make a will and also a living will, to say whether you want to be kept alive at the end of your life at all costs, or whether you want to be allowed to drift away under large doses of pain relief. The do as the best consultant advises you.
If you get cancer in your liver, and the surgeons offer to operate ( the liver can regenerate itself, actually) you may have quite a few months left. If you get liver secondaries, and they are not operable, you haven't got more than a very few months, unless you are extremely lucky.  (+ info)

why do i still have an ear infection (more info inside)?

So, I was prescribed antibiotics which was Augmentin for an ear infection and it's not gone. Is this common and if so could it spread to the meninges? And if so, how fast could it spread to the meninges? I know it could spread to the mastoid which is in your neck and you can come down with mastoiditis, but that is the least of m worries. I just don't want to get meningitis. So how long would it take for one to develop meningitis?

I have had headaches everyday for the last month. Why?

So for the last month or so, I've gotten headaches almost everyday if I don't take an asprin. However, I think that my mastoid is bruised because I hit it on my brother's car a couple of months ago, and it hurts on the lightest pressure. My dad thinks I could have mastoiditis because I've complained of an ear infection, a common part of mastoiditis. However, when I went to the doctor, I didn't have an ear infection, and the symptoms of the infection aren't regular, just off and on for a while.
Any suggestions to get rid of the headaches?
----------

I too, have problems with headaches/migranes for the past two years now. I currently have a neurologist that I go to regurarly to manage my headaches. She says the the daily headaches were due to increased stress, less sleep, a poor diet, and since I have food allergies, poor nutrition. I also get migranes ocasionally, currenlty, I'm working with my neurologist and we're trying to find prevenative medicines that work for me...if your problem continues, I suggest making an appointment with a neurologist. They'll ask you questions about your diet and what you're headaches are like. Make a headache diary. Write down when, for how long, the severity, where it hurts, the way in which it hurts (ex. throbbing or constant pain) and any side effects of your headache (ex nausea, vomiting, etc)They could possibly give you a CAT or CT-scan or MRI if they think it's necessary. Also tell them how you hit your head, I don't know what you're talking about with mastoidities but, in the mean time, take a few Naproxen-Sodium, or more commonly known as Aleeve, if regular asprin doesn't work for you. Good luck.  (+ info)

ok so this is pretty big and I have no idea how this will affect our family!?

so my partner has been on the waiting list for surgery for a while now and he just had a pre-appointment to check how things are going, it was supposed to be a minor operation to clear his ears (mastoiditis) but today the dr said that it looks as though it has turned into a tumour! and that it may (unlikely) be cancerous! we have a 1 year old and another on the way, how do we handle this?
----------

I suggest you ask your partner how he wants to handle this as it is important for him to express his feelings about the diagnosis to you and say anything and everything that is on his mind.. You and he have a bond that ties you together as though you are husband and wife as you have a child together and another on the way. You and he may want to do some research on the type of tumor it may be were it not to be cancerous and were it to be cancerous so you will have more information which may ease some of the stress he and you are experiencing now. It will affect your family and you will both worry about it, but I suggest you always talk with each other about it and cry together when you feel like crying. It is good for both of you to express your emotions and not hold back any feelings and above all, communicate with each other all the time and don't let him face this alone. Let him know you will always be there for him and you will both get through this together. I don't know if you and he are religious, but I have found that praying and asking God to help you both get through this helps. Were both you and he to think positive thoughts that it isn't a malignant tumor rather than thinking the worst you both would be helping each other with the psychological impact of having to deal with a tragic finding by his doctor. Surgical techniques and x-rays have become a lot better within the past few years and the chances are very good that the entire tumor can be removed without any later complications. Please be good to each other and to yourselves individually as the emotions both of you will experience is more than most people are used to and you and he can and will get through this together and neither of you will feel alone. Love has bound you together and love will get you through this together. Always remember to be good to yourselves. God bless you both and I wish you both the best.  (+ info)

Radiodiagnosis and soft tissue density?

I got a CT report saying chronic mastoiditis with soft tissue density in the tympanic cavity and sclerosed mastoid air cells with no specific ear symptoms other that hearing loss for the past 15 years. I asked my GP/ENT who says soft tissue density does not means a mass or tumour (like cholesteotoma) unless it is mentioned like that. Does a mass/tumour arise from a soft tissue density? Till date I am confused please give a clear explanation and the source on the internet

I recently had a MRI. I have a copy of the report. Could you tell me what "high signals noted at bilateral?

mastiod air cells, suggestive if mastoiditis" mean?
I have lost 75% of my hearing in my left ear since May
----------

Mastoiditis is an inflammation right behind the ear. More common in children but can occur in adults. It can become quite serious but caught early is generally easily treated. It is usually brought on by a severe ear infection that wasn't treated properly.  (+ info)

Roaring in my ear - what could cause it? See more below?

It roars when I lie on my right side. I had mastoiditis a couple of years ago and was told to be careful. I've seen the dr who couldn't see anything wrong. It doesn't hurt, just annoying!
----------

Tinnitus, earwax or blood pressure. Could be any of these. I would get a second opinion if I were you. I once saw a doctor who 'couldn't see anything' when I knew darn well I had a tropical ear infection (had them before, lived in tropics for many years), wouldn't give me antibiotics. Am now partly deaf in that ear, because by the time my own doctor came back, the damage was done.   (+ info)

Does anybody know what these sympyoms could be??

Ok,so about 2 years ago I went into hospital with a realli bad pain behind my ear(you know the bone behind the ear?ya that one) and they put me on anti-biotics,which worked while I was on them, but not after that. They also took a CT scan (because they thought it was mastoiditis) and nothing showed up. They put it down to lymph nodes being swollen. A few weeks later I was sent for a bone scan on my ear by another doc,and nothing showed up. Recently I have been experiencing excruciating pain,so we went to ANOTHER doc,and he sent me for an MRI on the said ear,but we haven't gotten the results back yet.
A few months ago my elbow on the same side(my right side) swelled up and hurts realli bad,and the doctors don't know what it is either!! I was just wondering, could these be related??
The day before yesterday,I was also feeling realli ill, realli terrible, and I was in soooo much pain(and I have a realli high pain threshold as I have arthritis, none of my problemos are linked to arthritis)and the night before last,I felt like I was gonna die, Seriously. Yesterday myself and my mom went into town, and I felt so ill,I was getting cold swests, even though it was realli dead and hot,and then I'd get roasting hot,and start sweating again. This went on and on,cold, hot, cold hot all day.
A few weeks ago,my right leg sewlled up completley also, and we didn't know what it was.
I'm on medication for my arthritis, methotrexate 10mg by injection, Infleximab by IV and painkillers and anti-inflammatories also. So far today I have getting cold and hot again.
Can Anybody help please??
----------

You poor girl. It's awful when even the
doctors can't diagnose your problem. I wish
I could be of some help, but this one is a
mystery. Sometimes, medicines do funny
things to different people, so be sure and
check that out too. I'll say a prayer that this
mystery will soon be some small problem that
doctors can put an end to. God Bless.  (+ info)
