I'm concerned i may have Mastoiditis? Please help me?

I am experiencing pain in the back of my ear/skull. there is a ball-like tumorish thing. So i hope you are understand which part of my ear i am talking about. It isnt in my ear, but BEHIND it. Its sore, kind of like when you have had a head band on for too long and you take it off (ladies you know what im talking about). But it is not that reason. Anyway. I have compared both ears, My right one has a tumor like substance. If it is Mastoiditis, do i need to see a doctor urgently? Or if it is not, what else could this beeee?? I'm a bit frightend. Please help me.

What happens if mastoiditis isn't treated?

my dad was diagnosed with mastoiditis about 8 mos to a year ago. he had lost the hearing in one ear and he thought it had completely cleared up because the bump went away and he could hear again. i found out on wednesday that he is taking a regimen of ascriptin just to be able to function because he had missed one and he came in an hour later to take it and he was hunched over (he popped his back out and he has slipped discs) and his eyes were bloodshot and watering. he finally admitted that he thinks the mastoiditis is back because he can't hear anymore out of one ear (the same as before) and it hurts to even wear a baseball cap anymore (he used to wear one everywhere). my mom and i tried to get him to go the doctor but he refuses, i don't think he ever will, but i am really worried about him.

what happens if he doesn't get it treated? if it matters, he is almost fifty.
----------

Mastoiditis: I will make it short:
If not treated apart from hearing loss which he has, he will develop Meningitis (Brain Infection) a very serious disease. also Venous Thrombosis in the brain (Like A Stroke).
It is imperative thet he gets admitted and given antibiotics.  (+ info)

mastoiditis - anyone heard of it or had it?

diagnosed with mastoiditis after visiting the docs with a stiff neck on friday - it might have started from a throat infection - brilliant advice on here helped that to ease :o)

i have anti-biotics and pain killers but if it gets any worse the doc says hospital for intravenous anti-biotics :o(

have you had it or heard of it?

is it likely to clear up with oral medication?
thanks guys - i thought it was more common than this for some reason - people have been saying its a childhood disease, but i guess thats not right.

i've looked up the general symptoms and treatment etc, but had no idea about all this.

i'm feeling better today, although my hearing has yet to come back, at least i can move my head around.
----------

Yes, I've heard of it.

I Had it...

And I had a mastoidectomy, (Nearly a year ago) after years and years of severe ear infections and weekly stays in the hospital on an intravenous with morphine and pethidine as my pain relief..

No, It is not likely to clear up with Oral medication..

Your doctor should obtain either a CT scan or an MRI to see exactly how far the infection has gone..

Hope this helps  (+ info)

I am sorry but the person above it right. It can spread to the
brain. Losing your hearing is least of his worries. My uncle
almost died from this when he was 16 same thing  (+ info)

can mastoiditis cause spinal menengitis?

a friend has spinal menengitis dr's also say she has mastoiditits ,
----------

Sure. If the infection crosses through the mastoid air cells into the meninges (the tissue layers that cover the brain and spine) - then the infection could technically spread to anywhere within the central nervous system (which includes the spine). She must be pretty sick. I hope your friend gets better!  (+ info)

is it normal to feel a clogged feeling and itchy with a perforated ear drum that is healing ?

I suffered from mastoiditis and was hospitilized for a week. The Doctor had to perforate my ear drum it was excruciating pain. I feel better but still caint hear and my ear itches inside and rings is this normal its sunday and the doctor doesnt return my call.
----------

A perforated eardrum is V painful, but should if R sensible & careful, recover in time.
The itching is good, means it's healing.
Your body may produce extra mucus 2 aid healing & this will make your ear feel full/blocked.

Can U not try a decongestant?
Worth a go if it helps eleviate that stuffed-up-head feeling.
U take it easy, rest up as much as possible & I hope U feel better soon.  (+ info)

Can mastoiditis recur?

I had mastioditis when I was 8, and I had a operation to remove the disease when I was around 11/12 and another to rebuild it when I was 14/15.
I'm now nearly 18, and I'm getting pain behind my ear, and also right inside my ear? I've also been getting dizzy when I move too quickly, or when I've been lying down etc, and I've started to get migrane type headaches over the last few weeks, which I've never got before. All these symptoms are very on/off, normally lasting for a few days, and then disappearing again - but it's been going on since February, and I'm starting to get a bit concerned that something is wrong, as the pain almost seems familar. Does anyone know whether it can happen again?
----------

Yes it can recur, and even if it hasn't it sounds like you need to see a doctor. Get it checked.  (+ info)
