How does orthodontist cure Malocclusion for Teenagers?

I am 14 years old this year, and I have been diagnosed with Malocclusion since 11 to 12 years old.I'm not sure what stage of malocclusion I'm in now,all I know is my lower jaw is apparently misaligned with my upperjaw, therefore looking as if I have a longer lower jaw,and also a slightly slanted mouth.I have been told by my dentist that I should wait until I'm 17 before I can undergo a jaw operation. However,I have seen from some websites that Malocclusion for Children and Teenagers can be cured by just using Braces. Is that true?Or a Jaw Operation must be gone through?
-FYI I have been to see an Orthodontist for at least 3 times already, and he was the one who told me to wait until I'm 17.He said if I had to undergo Jaw Operation I had to wait until all my teeth are all fully grown. But I wanted to see if there was a chance of me using braces to get my Malocclusion cured...

i work for two orthodontist and, malocclusion is not rare.we actually try braces first, and try to align your jaw that way, before we recommend that you have the surgery.and why are you waiting until you are 17,have you even been to see an orthodontist?  (+ info)

What to expect with palatal expansion before a bone graft surgery for a 6 year old born with cleft palate? ?

My 6 year old girl was born with cleft palate and cleft lip. Now she is suppose to begin maxillary expansion, she has a class III malocclusion (whatever that means). They say it may take 3 to 4 weeks for the palatal expansion to be done. My girl is very nervous and now so am I.Iam worried about how painful it will be. What can we expect ? Will this be painful for her?
How hard is it to tighten the expander?
----------

Expanding a palate on a child (esp. with cleft) is not painful--the bone is not yet fused (usually fuses together around 13 years old or so) With a cleft- the fistula (hole in palate) could get a little bigger. She may have a little trouble drinking liquids (just drink more slowly). They are widening her mouth to make more room and create more of an arch (think a U instead of a V) The most she will need is children's advil (kind of like a very mild, dull headache--really not bad). It can be a little bit tricky to expand, but make sure you know what you are doing when they show you before you leave the doctor's office. I've had very unsure parents ALWAYS get the hang of it. It's like fitting a key in a slot and rotating back. It's kind of exciting-you will see a change in her mouth in a very short time.
Now, the class III means her upper jaw is way behind the lower one (should be a little over bite- top over bottom teeth) Her's is more like Jay Leno-- strong lower jaw. Sometimes they can correct it with braces/devises but sometime need surgery.  (+ info)

Is there a chance that a malocclusion class 1 can go back to normal teeth?

I have a malocclusion class 1 and I'm 14 years old (but my birthday is coming up soon). But that's not the point.

I was wondering if at this age, is there a possibility that malocclusion class 1 teeth can go back to normal on it's own eventually as I age.
Or if that isn't likely possible, can I get braces and wear retainers to fix it?

What are some things that might help in preventing from making a malocclusion class 1 worse?

Thanks.
----------

Are you sure it's class 1? Class 1 occlusion is normal (at least the classes in the UK).

It's highly unlikely any occlusal problems you have will fix them selves on their own but if you go ahead with the braces it's only a couple of years invested in a lifetime of good oral health.  (+ info)

Could somebody explain these dental terms to me?

I had a dentist apointment today and the dentist wrote down what was wrong with my teeth (I'm going to get braces) but he didn't explain what any of it was..Here's what he wrote:

Slightly protrusive mandible
Class 1 malocclusion
Partial anterior crossbite on upper left lateral incisor
Retained lower right deciduous molar

In simple terms please! Thank you!
----------

Hello..
(1)..Means that your lower jaw is slightly in a forward position than normal....That usually results in
the lower front teeth meeting end to end when you close you jaws in a normal shut position.

(2)..That means the you teeth come together in a slightly less than perfect position when you you close your teeth together.

(3)...That means that the upper left "lateral" tooth #10 has slightly over lapped and adjacent tooth and doesn't exactly meet the opposing lower tooth in a normal position when you close your teeth together.

(4)..That simply means you still have a baby tooth that hasn't come out.

Good luck and I wish you well.

do i need surgery if i have malocclusion?

i got my teeth checked for braces and the orthodontic said i had malocclusion and might need surgery. is there a way i can get my teeth fixed without the surgery? my dads friend thats a dentist in mexico said that he could fix it by extracting teeth and w/ braces. i'm planning on getting a second opinion. but anyways my general question is if i would need the surgery?
im 15
upper and lower teeth don't meet
----------

I would not advise going to Mexico. You have no recourse if something goes wrong. Malocclusion simply means your teeth don't fit together right. It can cause jaw problems, abnormal wearing of your teeth and pain. Definitely get a second opinion. The solution will definitely depend on how severe the malocclusion, how old you are and your orthodontist's means of treatment. Some don't believe in pulling teeth at all, but make room for all the teeth. Some move teeth by a series of mouthpieces instead of the metal brackets we all think of when we think of braces. Do your homework before you commit to any treatment course. Ask about the pros and cons. Educate yourself.  (+ info)

Would you ask for virtual orthodontics treatment in 3D?

This question is generally targeted towards orthodontics. Suppose you are going to start a new orthodontics treatment (malocclusion) case. You have an option that you can view your patients current dental situation (before treatment) and future one (after treatment) as a 3D model on computer screen which can be rotated, zoomed and shareable to your patient. How would you like it ? How do you value such a service in terms of dollars per case ?

Is there a way to get insurance to cover adult braces - non-cosmetic?

I have to get braces for dental health reasons. Of course, a side benefit will be a nicer smile, but I have to get them to maintain dental health because I have extreme malocclusion (spelling?). Does anybody know of any possible ways to get insurance to cover braces when they are a necessary thing for oral health?
----------

This really has more to do with the employer than with the insurance company.

When your company chooses insurance benefits, they pick from a list of items for employees: medical, dental, vision, prescriptions, etc. Within those catagories, they can pick additional benefits: TMJ, orthodontics, basic ONLY, etc.

So, when the plan was picked, they either paid for orthodontic coverage or they didn't. An appeal to insurance probably won't help you. Check with your HR department, or your benefit book.  (+ info)

Why is my jaw developing at a different rate?

I'm 18 and I notice a significant difference between my right and left jaw. My right jaw is slim but my left jaw is big and bulky. It wasn't like this about 5 years ago. Both my parents and both my siblings have symmetrical jaws.
Maybe it's because I grind my teeth and I have minor TMJ? Also, I never had braces before although I don't have malocclusions and such.
----------

first of all everyone has TMJ it is just a joint. you may have problems with that joint and not even realise that you do. if you grind you teeth or if your jaw pops or clicks on opening or closing or if it moves to one side more then the other. this would all cause one side of your jaw to be bigger then the other, massage therapy can help with this. of massage the side that is bigger inside and outside your mouth and on the smaller side do little taps or pinches to stmulate the muscle  (+ info)
