How is malnutrition synonymous with memory loss?

In two months I have had the stomach flu twice. In July it was more acute & lasted longer & in Aug. it just kept me in bed 5 days again. After all was "said & done", I dropped even more weight & since I wasn't able to eat sometimes b/c my stomach wouldn't allow it ; I was probably severely malnourished. I don't remember much about what happened b4 I went on vacation last month & got sick. Sheesh. Y can't I remember? Maybe it's just as well lol.

You don't mention anything about going to a doctor, but with a history of unexplained stomach ailments (maybe flu, maybe another bug of some sort) that is as acute and re-occurring as what you've described, you owe it to yourself to have the options checked!

Malnourishment might be at the bottom of your forgetfulness, but - once again - it's a hell of a risk, just to write it off as malnourishment when you're losing whole days at a time!!

How long till I have malnutrition?

I am eating nothing but pancakes and ramen every day so far for a week. How long till I have serious problems because i dont have that much money and need to save for a little longer.

Eating carbs like that and NO fats or good protein will cause you to have high cortisol production and that will cause your body to believe you are starving, as well. We are not designed to eat low fat, high carbs. Diabetes can be brought on with such a regimen over time.

A very cheap way to eat is to get some white beans and some pink beans mix them 50/50 and boil them until soft. Make some cornbread out of some good ingredients and then put lots of butter and sea salt on that before eating. You can live for less than $5 to $6 per day on that for quite a while. That has complete protein due to the combination of beans and corn, good fats from the butter, and some carbs from the cornbread and beans.

Drink lots of water. It works really well.

good luck to you  (+ info)

Can malnutrition and dehydration cause blurred vision?

Today I got quite scared because I sat in front of the computer and my vision became unusually fuzzy. The only reason I can think of is that I have poor eating habits (one meal a day w/ occasional snacks), I have a drinking problem (due to depression/anxiety/stress) and the weather has been insanely hot for the past 2-3 days.

I know I should be seeing a doctor about this (and I will) but I just wanted to get an opinion.

Thanks for answering! : )

Does a really light period mean malnutrition?

I recently had a really light period that lasted from friday night to sunday midday-ish. I usually last about 5 days and am quite heavy but this was really light. I have been dieting over the past few months however have gotten really intense in the last month (eating 400 cals in the day and then a healthy meal at dinner time- i have to eat what my mum puts out for me) and was wondering if my light period could be attributed to this, and if so, is it dangerous for my health?
Thanks :)

400 calories a day is really low, it could be affecting your cycle. BUT, some people have heavy flow and some people have light flow. Try changing your diet and see what happens.  (+ info)

How is heredity, malnutrition, neoplasm, and infection linked with heart disease?

Hereditary is proved to have links with your chances of getting heart disease. Fortunately there are measures which can be taken to stave the development of it. Good diet, exercise, weight maintainance, keeping cholesterol levels down (diet and drugs if need be).
Infection can cause damage to the structures of the heart eg Rheumatic fever can damage the valves, or inflammation of the muscle or layers of the heart.
As far as Im aware neoplasm isnt linked;  (+ info)

Is there a vitamin or something that can slow down gray hairs? Like could it be because of malnutrition?

Is there something that prevents it?
----------

Gray hair is one of the most familiar signs of aging. It usually starts in late 30s and gradually increase the percentage on your scalp over the next few years. The loss of hair color is due to a gradual fall in melanin production in the hair bulb. If you look at the hairs on a graying head you find a full range of color, from the normal shade through to white along each hair, and also from one hair to another. Usually people notice their first gray hairs near their temples. Then the grayness spreads to the crown, and later to the back of the head.
Our hair is made up of two parts: a shaft - the colored part we see growing out of our heads and a root - the bottom part, which keeps the hair anchored under the scalp

The root of every strand of hair is surrounded by hair follicle. Each hair follicle contains a certain number of pigment cells. These pigment cells continuously produce a chemical called melanin that gives the growing shaft of hair its color of brown, blonde, red, and anything in between.

Melanin is the same stuff that makes our skin's color fair or darker. The dark or light color of someone's hair depends on how much melanin each hair contains.

There are several reasons for gray hair and these vary from one person to another pending on one's age. The most common reason is heredity, the other big reason for graying hair is the environment, a recent study indicates that smokers are 4 times more likely to become prematurely gray (or bald). Among younger people, vitamin B-12 deficiency, thyroid imbalance, anemia or viruses can also lead to gray hair.

As we get older, the pigment cells in our hair follicles gradually die. When there are fewer pigment cells in a hair follicle, that strand of hair will no longer contain as much melanin and will become a more transparent color - like gray, silver, or white - as it grows. As people continue to get older, fewer pigment cells will be around to produce melanin. Eventually, the hair will look completely gray. By combining traditional oriental herbal medicine theory and current scientific breakthrough, Reminex research team discovered by reviving dormant or sometimes nearly dead pigment cells, they are able to prolong the natural hair color stage for older people and prevent premature gray hair or white hair in younger people.

How big a problem is obesity compared to malnutrition ?

I reckon that the obesity is way worse than malnutrition. Although i'd say in a lot of circumstances a lot of fat people probably haven't seen a nutritious meal in years cos there isn't much nutrition in a burger and chips... :-)  (+ info)
