What do you guys think about this? A six year old child hospitalised for treatment due to malnutrition?

This is the son of a 'friend' of mine. He's got 7 cavaties, wear and tear of a 30 year old, and is losing enamel of most of his teeth. The reason for this? 3 takeaway meals a day, most days, no water or milk to drink, ever, and lots and lots of sugar, lollies, and sweet drinks. He's calcium and vitamin deficiant, and had to be hospitalised recently for four days to be given laxative meds through a nasal tube because he was so badly constipated. This woman gets over $1000 a fortnight, through maintenence and social security (we live in Australia), and has huge problems looking after her son (obviously).
Oh, and child welfare says there's nothing they can do!!!
Sorry for the rant, I had to get this off my chest! Feel free to comment!

Why are so many Americans who are NOT starving suffering from Malnutrition?

I need help on this..I thought malnutrition is starving..?
----------

Malnutrition is not getting the vitamins and minerals your body needs to repair it's self, produce energy, and much more it has nothing to do with the amount of food you take in because if your only getting one type of food your body's not getting what it needs  (+ info)

Is a diet of rice, orange juice, and sardines enough to protect me from malnutrition?

What if I just ate bread instead of rice?
I'm not trying to lose weight, I'm trying to survive on as little money as possible.
----------

The sardines and rice (and bread) are all acid-forming foods. The orange juice is alkaline-forming. It's important to maintain a neutral to slightly alkaline ph in your body. If you'd like to learn more here's a link:

I understand you want to survive on as little money as possible and you want to be healthy while doing it. Maybe the charts can help you with your quest.  (+ info)

People who are malnourished may be skinny or bloated. Their skin is pale, thick, dry, and bruises easily. Rashes and changes in pigmentation are common.
Hair is thin, tightly curled, and pulls out easily. Joints ache and bones are soft and tender. The gums bleed easily. The tongue may be swollen or shriveled and cracked. Visual disturbances include night blindness and increased sensitivity to light and glare.

Other symptoms of malnutrition include:
anemia, diarrhea, disorientation, night blindness, irritability, anxiety, and attention deficits, goiter (enlarged thyroid gland)
loss of reflexes and lack of muscular coordination, muscle twitches, amenorrhea (cessation of menstrual periods)
scaling and cracking of the lips and mouth.  (+ info)

Could malnutrition be contributing to my massive farting problem?

On weekdays I hardly eat anything, and pretty much live off of chocolate milk.
----------

Maybe you're lactose intolerant and that choco milk you're living on is causing your massive flatulence problem. Why are you letting yourself get malnourished? Just wondering. Hope you get better.  (+ info)

why does your stomach bloat when you suffer from malnutrition?

if you were starving, wouldn't your stomach cave in?
----------

This is called "Kwashiorkor", a word derived from Ghana.

It is bloating of the stomach due to severe protein deficiency.

The swelling is caused by fluid retention. The exact reasons for the fluid retention are complicated and not fully understood, but it is believed that reduced "oncotic pressure", which is normally exerted by protein in the blood, is the main cause.

Also the malnutrition can lead to an enlarged liver, a secondary cause of the bloating.  (+ info)

How does malnutrition cause a person to have a beer belly?

It's a condition caused by severe protein deficiency called Kwashiorkor.

"The swollen abdomen is generally attributed to two causes: First, the appearance of ascites due to increased capillary permeability from the increased production of cysteinyl leukotrienes (LTC4 and LTE4) as a result of generalized intracellular deficiency of glutathione. It is also thought to be attributed to the effect of malnutrition on reducing plasma proteins (discussed below), resulting in a reduced oncotic pressure and therefore increased osmotic flux through the capillary wall. A second cause may be due to a grossly enlarged liver due to fatty liver. This fatty change occurs because of the lack of apolipoproteins which transport lipids from the liver to tissues throughout the body."  (+ info)

Would Overpopulation lead to child malnutrition?

Would or does overpopulation in India or Bangladesh lead to child malnutrition? In what ways?

What factors do you think lead to child malnutrition in India and Bangladesh?
----------

Overpopulation in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh has already lead to child malnutrition in various degrees. However, China has similar problem, but their level of child malnutrition is almost non-existent. I have been to china tree times and visited India and Pakistan.

About 30% of the population in this part of the world lives below poverty level and we have about 3 child per family or more in Indo-Pak subcontinent. In China, they have 1-child per family being implemented for over 40 years now. Therefore, the family living under poverty level can cope with the need of food and other essentials of one-child better than those having 3 to 4 child per family.

Therefore, you can not blame over population at macro-level (country-wise) alone, if you are not focusing over-population at micro-level (family-wise).

Hope above answers your query.  (+ info)
