In the next 10 years how will malaria affect african children?

In the next ten years how do you think that the child mortality rate will be affected by malaria? Will it increase? Will it decrease? Please give facts to back up your answer!
Currently, between 2 and 3 million children in sub Saharan Africa are killed by malaria every year. In the next ten years one would expect this appalling figure to come down.

Already a lot is being done in the field of malaria prevention by International organizations such as Belinda and Bill Gates foundation and donors countries in supplying insecticide impregnated mosquito nets. Also several vaccine tests and small trials are on going in East and West Africa, the results have been reasonably good. The next year or two should see some large scale clinical trials. Of course it is still not clear if a break through will happen within 10 years.

Over the last few years years, resistance to Chloroquine by malaria has been reported on the East Africa coast and traveling inland. In ten years, the resistance could reach West Africa. This is bad news as treatment of malaria with Chloroquine is both cheap and widely available. The alternative of Artemisinin is not only expensive but supply is rather thin on the ground.

So in the next 10 years, the malaria mortality figure is going to be a mixed one with perhaps a slight improvement or even deterioration due to the increasing resistance to first line drug. However, if the vaccine experiment succeeds, the malarial mortality will dramatically fall.

I am really afraid that i will get malaria and die from getting bitten by a mosquito. I am also kind of afraid of getting west nile. I live in Southern California and the mosquitos are out and about.

The IRS is one of the ways to kill mosquitoes that cause malaria. It involves spraying insecticide on the inner walls and every surfaces of the houses. Many people tend to refuse spraying.
Well you don't just spray and hope for the best. Not only that but you could infact cause someone to have an alergic reaction. That, could be very bad. believe it or not DEET can kill you. All you need is to be sprayed while yuor immune system in compromised in some way. One minute later you are dead.
I was almost killed by that stuff so I know how it feels. It is the most helpless feeling you I have experianced.

I would use Permathrin or a close relative of that for my spraying. However you will need ot respray at least once every two weeks as it will break down faster than many other pesticides. don't spray it around fish as it will kill them D E A D dead.

Also lemmon sented ammonia sprayed on the shrubs and grass around the yard helps to keep tham away as well. The plants will benefit from the ammonia and you will benefit from the lemmon sent.

Fans are also a great use because the little critters follow Co2 to get too their prey. ( your breath ) Move some air around and they will have a harder time finding you.

Garlic, rubbed on the exposed skin will also deter the little beggers and keep them from you as well. The big draw back to that is you may well run off all you freinds and neighbors as well.

Make certain all the guter are free of litter with no standing water. same for anything else outside the house that may hold water. ( get rid of it) Remover the breading ground and you will remove houndrededs of those pesky things. If you have a small pond for decoration buy some guppies to put in there they will eat the mosquito larva that may be in there.

This is my suggestion take it or leave it. I used too own and opperate a pest control company and I know what I am taling about.

I know it is caused by the mosquito, but what else causes Malaria? Poor sanitation? Lack of vaccines?
Usually, people get malaria by being bitten by an infective female Anopheles mosquito. Only Anopheles mosquitoes can transmit malaria, and they must have been infected through a previous blood meal taken on an infected person. When a mosquito bites an infected person, a small amount of blood is taken, which contains microscopic malaria parasites. How do people who move overseas protect against malaria?

I just watched a movie about people that permanantly moved to a tropical location, but it never addressed the problem of Malaria.
One can't take the preventive pills forever since that's too toxic, but there isn't a vaccine. What do they do?
I live in the Dominican Republic and malaria is a problem over here. I have screens on all of my windows and that pretty much keeps the mosquitoes out . Some people use a net over their bed, but that's only if they don't have screens on the windows.

I don't take any medication to prevent malaria. It's better to just use preventative measures.  (+ info)

i'm doing a graduation project on thrombocytopenia in Malaria. and i got 90 cases +ve with malaria and 65 of them having thrombocytopenia. i just want to know the cause of this phenomena. and what's the relation between paltelet and malaria?
The Plasmodium species(the parasite that causes malaria) have no direct effect on platelets. Instead Plasmodium attacks red blood cells (RBCs) and when the are damaged they are trapped by the spleen which filters the blood. Because there are so many RBCs damaged the spleen takes up an unusually high number of RBCs and becomes enlarged (splenomegaly). The platelets get trapped in the now clogged spleen and this causes the thrombocytopenia.  (+ info)

is it posible to hav malaria in the UK after treatn it twice in africa?

I had malaria twice in my country in july/sept and treated it well and recoverd.Came back to the UK in september and now i am having flu-like symptoms.Could it be flu or malaria.am confused cos i dnt thnk i shud have malaria after al dt treatment.
If you feel really unwell with the flu go to the doctor and say you have had maleria before and that u feel really bad. The doctor should do some tests. But i would go to the hospital myself there you are not waiting around for test results.  (+ info)
