My eyesight is affected by macular degeneration - any tips for getting the best from low-lit rooms in museums?

lights are often low to protect paintings but this means information cards are also harder to read. this is worse when there is a rope barrier for security purposes.
----------

Perhaps you could get a flashlight- maybe one with an infra-red filter- that should be fine for art-works etc as it's UV A and B rays that destroy the pigments, etc.
Infra-red is common and safe.

Try a military surplus store:

Has anyone had a reversal of macular degeneration with alternative medicine?

Has anyone's drusen disappeared and vision returned?
----------

this is what Dr Schulze recommends for vision problems..I know this has cured glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts and blindness sand I think he said it helped macular degeneration somewhere too.

take the Eyebright formula, Brain formula, Cayenne Tincture, Cayenne Powder, and SuperFood Plus

get these at herbdoc.com '
]
these are the highest quality herbs I am aware of.

especially take the eyebright formula

put in in an eyecup 5-10 drops in distilled water and tilt head back and move eyes from left, right, top, bottom, and around with each eye

do about 6-7 times a day.

Also take 2 dropperfuls (60 drops) 5 times a day of the eyewash formula internally..

, also take organic ginkgo tincture (herbpharm is a good brand) 2 dropperfuls 5 times a day he says " If they use it along with brain herbs like ginkgo biloba and cayenne and rosemary to stimulate more blood and oxygen to the brain, then it's better still"

.also take take 3 cups raw carrot juice he says "But if they use it six times
a day along with having that juicer going, and juicing themselves three
glasses of carrot juice a day, and getting all that vitamin A in their system,"

"And if they use it along with getting on their slant board, or slant
couch once or twice a day, now we are talking about seeing dramatic
results. People just tend to do one thing and expect it to create a miracle,
and you really have to put the whole program together."

Also improve your diet in general..more raw foods, produce, whole grains legumes, less junk food, chemicalized foods, fast foods, less meats, cheeses and dairy, etc improve your diet in general for best results. start shopping at health food stores and farmers markets.  (+ info)

where can I find out about diet/diet supplements for macular degeneration?

My husband is 65 and just found to have this..what should we know/or do to slow this progression?
----------

You can stop this in its tracks. Genentec came up with a drug which is injected into the eye that causes the blood vessels to go back to a almost normal size. . thus preserving eyesight. A 79 yr. old friend had this done and her eyesight has been maintained. Go to a eye doctor and get referal. It is out of the trial stage aand available on the open market.

Who is LUCENTIS for?

LUCENTIS® (ranibizumab injection) is a prescription medicine for the treatment of patients with wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

What important safety information should I know about LUCENTIS?

Like any prescription medication, LUCENTIS is not for everyone. You should not use LUCENTIS if you have an infection in or around the eye.

Like other injections given into the eye, serious eye infection (endophthalmitis) and detached retina have occurred with LUCENTIS. Increases in eye pressure have been seen within 1 hour of an injection. Your eye doctor should monitor your eye pressure and eye health during the week after the injection.

If your eye becomes red, sensitive to light, painful, or has a change in vision, you should seek immediate care from your eye doctor.

Although uncommon, conditions associated with eye- and non-eye-related blood clots (arterial thromboembolic events) may occur.

Serious side effects related to the injection procedure were rare. These included serious eye infection, detached retina, and cataract. Other uncommon serious side effects included inflammation inside the eye and increased eye pressure.

The most common eye-related side effects were red eye, eye pain, small specks in vision, the feeling that something is in your eye, and increased tears. The most common non-eye-related side effects were nose and throat infection, headache, and respiratory and urinary tract infections.

LUCENTIS is for prescription use only. Individual results with LUCENTIS may vary.

Hope this helps your husband. Eyesight is precious>  (+ info)

if a 30 y/o male has macular degeneration, is there anything that may allow him to improve his vision?

in goindg to the eye doctors, the opt fround drusen in the back of my macula though did not exactly diagnose me with having degeneration--though i was run through the tests associated with. curious if vision loss for a 30y/o will continue--or is there a chance for improvement--and how?
----------

The course of treatment would depend on the type of macular degeneration that this person has been diagnosed with. If it is dry macular degeneration, there are no treatments available that will stop the progression of the disease, but there are things that can be done to slow the disease. AREDS is the recommended course of action for this version.

With wet macular degeneration (the more severe kind), there are several anti-VEGF drugs available such as Lucentis, Avastin and Macugen which halt the progression of the disease and in some cases reverse its affects.

Given that drusen was found, it is more likely that you have the dry version of the disease.  (+ info)

Natural treatments for macular degeneration ? Do they help ?

My father is suffering from macular degeneration (AMD) and he’s been told that there are no effective cure to treat the problem. However, a friend of mine says that there are some natural treatments to help people with AMD. What are they ? What kind of treatments does he have to follow ?
----------

Dry macular degeneration is usually found in aging people. Macular degeneration is developed when part of the retina deteriorates. The retina is the interior layer of the eye consisting of the receptors and nerves that receive and transmit light signals from the eye into the optic nerve, then to the brain. There is as yet no effective cure for age-related macular degeneration, but there are alternative treatments for macular degeneration that can delay its progression or even improve vision.

A study shows that risk factors of macular degeneration are excessive weight, lack of exercises, harmful drugs effects, high blood pressure, diabetes and heredity.

Treating macular degeneration with healthy nutrition and exercises :
Medical experts suggest that nutrients that contain antioxidant such as vitamin C (ascorbic acid), vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol), carotenoids, selenium and zink can neutralize the damage of the cells caused by free radicals.

It is found that people who choose active lifestyle may less likely to suffer this eye problem comparing to those who are inactive. Many people admit that special therapeutic eye exercises have helped their vision in improving. Therapeutic eye exercises are very beneficial in slowing the progress of macular degeneration. Those eye exercises are designed to strengthen the eye muscles and train the vision center of the brain.

The eye trainings include covering one eye with one hand and looking at different objects continuously instead of staring at just one object. Or you can focus on pencil holding it at arm's length. Begin to move your hand, holding the pencil as if you are conducting it. Slowly move the object in figure 8s, swirls and other shapes. Always keep your eyes focused on the object's detail. Move the pencil closer to you and further away. Remember to blink frequently, relax and breathe regularly.

Although there is no cure, there are effective optional treatments for macular degeneration to prevent severe vision loss, slow the progression or improve the problems considerably  (+ info)

Has anyone suffered a side effect using Timolol Maleate eyedrops for Glaucoma/Macular Degeneration?

After laser surgery on one eye, blood built up behind the eye. My dad used the eyedrops and suffered side effects. He was 84. He died in December.
He was almost drugged. His response was slow. His leg muscle was affected. He could not stand. His heart rate went below 60 and he had to be put on an external pacemaker in ICU. He became very weakened.
----------

sylvia m,
Some of the side effects of Timolol include - Headache. Visual disturbances. Allergic reaction to active ingredient. Low blood pressure (hypotension). Inflammation of the lining of the eye, causing pain and redness (conjunctivitis). Stinging and redness. Slow heart rate (bradycardia). Breathing difficulties due to a narrowing of the airways (bronchospasm). Disorders of the front layer of the eye (cornea). Inflammation of the surface of the eye (keratitis). Dry eyes. Burning, itching and painful sensations in the eye. You should not wear soft contact lenses while you are using this medicine. This it because the medicine contains a preservative that can be absorbed by soft contact lenses and cause eye irritation. You would be advised to contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any side effects that are disturbing to you. Details of the side effects will be found on the data sheet enclosed with the medication. Failing that, you should contact your pharmacist for elaboration of these details.

Has anyone had Avastin injections for macular degeneration?

What results did you have?
----------

Hi. I just stumbled upon this question with my main account and noticed I had reached my limit of answers for one day and saw that if I waited until tommorow, your question would no longer be available for answering! To give you some background on why I would be eager to answer your question, I work as an RN for five leading retinal surgeons in my state and we currently have the most updated treatments for macular degeneration. Our best and most commonly used treatment is Avastin. With AMD (macular d) you have these abnormal vessels growing in the macular region of the retina. What the Avastin does is removes and helps prevent these vessels from growing and leaking blood and fluid which causes the central vision to darken and distortion around the darkened area. Avastin was initially created for colon cancer as it had similar vascular problems. Avastin is almost never completely successful the first injection. On average a patient will need an injection every two months and I have seen some patients whose abnormal vessels stop growing and breaking for good after two treatments and we have some patients are currently on their 13th injection. The point is those abnormal vessels are stubborn and basically you stop injecting them when they stop growing. Avastin is currently though the ONLY medication on the market that can actually improve their vision, which is a remarkable thing considering the first treatment for macular degeneration was made only ten years ago (called photodynamic therapy) and that treatment can only slow the disease down and hardly ever improve the vision. With Avastin, we can inject a patient and a month later they can read four-five lines better on the eye chart. I will swear by the stuff! We also have a treatment called Lucentis, but it's exactly like Avastin only you must be injected more often thereby increasing your risk of endopthalmitis (very bad eye infection which results in blindness). So if you or someone you know is getting or has received an Avastin injection, they are in the best hands possible!!! Trust me I see miracles with that drug.  (+ info)
