What could be the cause of leukopenia and long-term illness?

About 2 and a half years ago I started to have headaches and overwhelming tiredness.
I was sent for an MRI and everything appeared normal.

A couple of months later I started to suffer from recurrent infections and illnesses.

In the last 2 years I have had many infections including:
Recurrent UTI's, kidney infection, recurrent uvulitis, ear infections, recurrent thrush, lymphadenitis and cellulitis (the last 2 requiring hospitalisation).

I have also had lots of viruses, colds and flu symptoms.

On a regular basis I suffer from migraines/headaches, aching limbs, neck, shoulders and backache, numbness in arms and hands, with loss of dexterity in the fingers, fatigue, skipped heart-beats and chest pain, 'brain fog' and occasional blurred vision, occasional low grade fever, and more recently muscle twitching, spasms and cramps.

I eat a healthy diet although I am unable to exercise due to chronic pain. I have put on 2 stone in 2 years but this may be due to lack of exercise and my age - 40 years. I have also had bouts of depression, usually as a result of being so fed up of it all.

I was referred to an Infectious Diseases Specialist about 18 months ago, and initially it was suggested possible CFS. She has run many blood tests to rule out things like thyroid, diabetes and HIV, and I have also had an ECG and cardiac scan.

Although my blood tests are usually relatively normal (apart from when I am really ill), the one thing that does crop up almost every time is a low white blood cell count. Neutropenia and leukopenia have been noted on several occasions.
I recently had another test and all was normal apart from a low absolute leukocyte count (normal range 1.5 - 4.......mine was 1.1).
As yet I still don't have a diagnosis and I am really wanting some answers so that I can begin treatment or a cure.
I am fed up of having so many illnesses and infections and feeling so damn ill all the time, and having no idea of the prognosis.

Am I right in assuming that the reason I am always getting ill is because of the leukopenia? Or is the leukopenia a result of always being ill?

Does anyone have any ideas of what could be the cause?
Or any suggestions of a diagnosis?
Or can you suggest or recommend any more tests?

I would be very grateful for any assistance, thanks.
I also suffer from a lot of sores, on my mouth and in my nose, and get lots of mouth ulcers.

Is tuberculosis in neck lymph node contagious?

Last week of Dec. 2007 I discovered my lymph node on my neck,I didn't not go to any doctor as I am waiting for it to disappear.After 3 weeks I decided to go to a Doctor for check up,the Doctor advised me to undergo ultrasound,the results were:
1) Bilateral cervical, submandicular and submental lymphadenopathy more prominent at the right hand side
2) Solitary hypoechoic nodule (3.2mm) at right lobe of thyroid gland)
Also, the doctor prescribed me to drink Neoclav tab 625gms. and Emidol tab 500mg. After taking the medicine, the lymp node didn't disappear, the doctor advised me to have dental check up. I went to dentist for dental and xray but not found any problem.My dentist advised me to go back to my doctor and to request for biopsy to make sure what is the problem. The result of biopsy was Features are of necrotizing lymphadenitis consistent with tuberculosis.I had also my tuberculin test, the result was positive but the x-ray is negative.Please advise if this is contagious?
----------

First, understand that a diagnosis of "consistent with tuberculosis" is NOT a sure diagnosis of an infection with Tb even though your skin tuberculin test was positive!!! IF you do have Tb, then the special stains on the tissue lymph node biopsy slides would show the Tb organism (a bacterium). Another infection, less well known, that can produce changes similar to what you describe, is known at "cat scratch disease" which also produces necrotizing granulomatous lymphadenitis. It, too, is caused by a different, hard-to-stain bacteria. I am glad there is no suspicion of any lymph node tumor.  (+ info)

is extrapulmonary tuberculosis in cervical lymph node contagious?

Last March 2008 i discovered a cervical lymph node. At first it was just a small one but after a week it grew bigger until the 2nd week. I went to the doctor to have it checked and the doctor advised me to have an X-ray and sputum exam, the result we're negative so the doctor told me to take Amoxicillin 500mg for 10 days and observed if it will disappear. After a week I didn't found any improvement on the treatment given so I went to another doctor who specializes on the neck. The doctor advised me to have and incisional biopsy which was done last March 30, 2009. The result of my biopsy is ACUTE ON CHRONIC GRANULOMATOUS LYMPHADENITIS WITH CENTRAL NECROSIS SUGGESTIVE OF TUBERCULUOS OR ETIOLOGY. what do this mean? is this a contagious type of tuberculosis? please help me.. :(

I'm experiencing itching from one of my medications...?

I had been diagnosed with Lymphadenitis yesterday, and was given a steroid shot and three prescriptions: a painkiller, an antibiotic, and steroid pills. Well it took all of them that day as prescribed, two doses of the painkiller and antibiotic and one dose of the steroid, and i felt drowsy and went to sleep, but i woke up not but an hour later and felt this extreme itching sensation....I don't know which one could have done because they all label 'itching as an allergic reaction" and it took us 5 hours yesterday just to talk to a doctor, so i'm hoping someone here will give me advice on what to do....
the prescriptions were Amoxcillian, Hydrocodone, and prednisone
----------

Hon, this really is something you need to take up with your prescribing physician immediately. There are some allergic reactions that can worsen with time. That said, both amoxicillan and hydrocodone (codeine in it) can cause rather severe reactions in some sensitive individuals. Please be smart and call the doctor or go to the er or urgent care before taking another dose of medication. A severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis can occur if you are not careful here. Good luck!  (+ info)

Why am I having such bad abdominal pain and no one can tell me why?

I am writing this to find some help for my partner.

We visited the ER of a hospital we happened to be near (not our "normal" ER/hospital) last Sunday. She was having pain in her stomach in intense episodes to the point of tears and inability to walk.

The pain is in her lower abdomen, just above the pubic bone. The pain also radiates to her back, upper groin, and down her legs.

The doctor we saw was concerned, as this pain was different than any other abdominal pain she had experienced. She has IBS, but her problem presented with NO digestive symptoms of any kind.

They found, in the doctor's words, "a slight urinary tract infection," and Mesenteric Lymphadenitis, which usually occurs in children and teens, most often after or during a "stomach virus". She is 27, and has had no stomach virus or digestive problems.

They discharged her with pain meds and Cipro for to treat the problem. They also gave her Levoquin before we left the ER.

He told her she should not work until Wednesday, but should probably be fine by then. She rested, took the meds, and went back to teaching ballet on Thursday.

Thursday evening, another incredibly intense episode of similar pain drove us back to our "normal" ER. The doctor we saw was incredibly rude, and said she just had "chronic abdominal pain," and there was nothing anyone could do to help or treat her. All she did to follow up with the other hospital's CT scan and urine screen was blood tests and another urine screen. This urine screen came back clean, and she said all the bloodwork was "fine."

She told my partner she just needed to go home and rest, change her diet, and continue taking pain meds, even though they were not helping at all, only making her more tired. She said that she shouldn't be working, as my partner teaches dance, but the classwork she had been doing prior to Thursday's visit was light ballet with preschool children, not Zumba or something. The level of activity was no more than normal walking.

We are at the end of our rope! I am listing her symptoms below. If anyone has any thoughts, please let us know. The pain episodes are becoming more frequent, and it is not getting any better; if anything, worse.

* Intense episodes, as well as constant pain in the lower abdomen, just above the pubic bone

* Constant drowsiness

* Elevated liver functions, to the point that the doctor she was seeing did not feel comfortable putting her on medication for high cholesterol.

* Back pain, radiating from the abdomen and down her legs

* Excessive thirst, despite drinking more than the average required daily water intake

* Frequent "hot flashes"

* Sensation that she is going to pass a huge blood clot (as one might during menstruation), yet without any bleeding, and not in the PMS or period time.

* She is on several medications, some very recently prescribed. The new medications are listed in all CAPS.

* SPIRONOLACTONE
* SPRINTEC
* HCTZ
* POTASSIUM
* Metformin
* Celexa

Please help! If you have any thoughts, please share them with us.

Thanks so much.

I wish I could say what exactly was causing the problem, but I can't. What I CAN tell you is that I, for the life of me, CAN NOT figure out why she is on Potassium supplements AND Spironolactone. Spiro was originally developed as a medication for high blood pressure and is basically a diaretic. Most diaretics are Potassium depleting, however Spiro isn't. It's actually a Potassium sparing medication, which means that if you don't keep an eye on your diet in terms of your Potassium intake, it could reach toxic levels and actually be fatal. I'm on Spiro & Sprintec for acne, because spiro is also effective in controlling hormones and is best used w/ a birth control pill. I would see another doctor ASAP and present to them the list of meds she's on. She needs another blood test and don't leave until you have some solid answers, this doesn't sound like a "virus," and "Chronic abdominal pain" is just rediculous. It doesn't come out of the blue w/ no cause and pain meds are just going to mask the symptom of potentially a larger problem. Good luck, I hope she gets better soon!

Oh, By the way, if Potassium levels get to a toxic level, they can cause Kidney damage as well as heart damage, that's how serious it is.  (+ info)

What if symptoms of pharyngitis is present but the throat culture is negative for streptococcus?

Symptoms for a 9year old include fever, sore throat, and abdominal pain. There is also swollen tonsils covered in white exudates, and fine red lesions on roof of mouth, the child also has upper cervical lymphadenitis but no cough or runny nose.
----------

fever of more than 101.5, severe pain in the throat or the lymph nodes, abscence of cough are some of the things that highly suggest strep even if the cultures are negative. what you have decribed aounds concerning enough that most doctors would probably prescribe emperic antibiotics. The decision is clinical, for your doctor, consult again if symptoms are persisting or worsening or if new symptoms develope. Remember that you have a right to a second opinion if you are not in agreement with the doctor, this does not mean that the first doctor is wrong, good luck  (+ info)
