How long can someone last in End Stage Liver Failure?

My mum is in hospital and her liver is failing... She has very swollen legs and abdomen, she is jaudiced and has been bleeding internally. She is in a lot of pain with the swelling and also has mulitiple infections. The doctors are not really saying very much and I just wanted to know if anyone else has been through this and how long they had to watch the person they love suffer like this. She is also very sleepy and at times very confused...

I live 3 hours away and visit when I can but its very hard mostly on my sister who is watching this everyday.

How much longer will we have to watch her suffer?
----------

I'm sorry to hear this. How upsetting for you all.

Sadly, your mum has not got long - maybe just a few days or a couple of weeks.

If she is in pain still, then your sister can ask on her behalf for her pain meds to be changed or increased.  (+ info)

Why is a person get swollen all over legs and stomach when she or he has liver and kidneys failure?

What causes the swollenness on a person's legs and abdominal due to liver and kidneys failure? What are the ways to reduces these swollens? Are there any medical specialist out there that works with this kind of problems?
----------

It's caused because the person cannot eliminate fluid through the kidneys, and it's building up in their tissues.  (+ info)

what happens to your body when you get liver failure and die right away?

i'm writing a story about what death would be like and the girl dies from taking a bottle of tylonal (killing herself) and so what are some signs that your body is shutting down and is about to die from liver failure?
----------

acute liver failure is not easy to detect. it happens suddenly. usually liver disease is something that happens gradually over time. if i were u would do some more research on suicide by drugs and what it does to the body prior to death.also, is this this girls first attempt on suicide and if not how many times then it would be a gradual liver failure.  (+ info)

what would happen if you got liver failure?

i heard that people who overdose on stuff like paracetamol (not planning to, just curious) get liver failure....does that hurt a lot? when you would you realise...what symptoms would you get>
----------

Liver failure is not a picnic. There are stages to the process, but once your liver has reach its last stages these are some of the things that happen to your body: Your skin and eyes can turn yellow because bilirubin (the breakdown product of red blood cells) can't be removed, bilirubin can also makes you intensely itchy. The blood flowing to the liver can back up and you can get big swollen vessels in the esophagus (which can burst leading to vomiting up blood), hemorrhoids, as well as in other places. The belly can swell up with fluid sometimes many liters worth. There can be easy bruising or bleeding because the things you need to clot are made by the liver. Your liver clears toxins, so if it fails to function toxins can build up in your body including your brain which can lead to confusion, problems with memory, other mental functions. Sometimes renal (kidney) failure can follow. It's a complex process, and certainly not a comfortable one. Here's a pretty decent website to read: http://www.liverfoundation.org/education/info/progression/ Truly hope you are not planning to end your life. Hope this information helps. Peace on your journey.  (+ info)

Can you die suddenly from liver failure?

My step-dad was a drinker, he drank almost every night after he got off work. He recently died and my brother found him, he looked like he was sleeping. His arm was back behind his head and my brother said he looked like he was just sleeping. Today, my mom got a call from the medical examiner saying he died of liver failure. JUST last week he got a test done and it said his liver enzymes were mildly elevated. He was just getting ready to go back to work after having rotator cuff surgery. That night he took 3 pain pills and was drinking, he is a snorer and I think he might of had sleep apnea. It's just so frustrating not knowing if my step-dad suffered or not I wish I could find out so bad! So sorry for the rant, I have no where to turn to.

I'm so sorry about the loss of your step dad. To answer your question, yes, you can suddenly die from liver failure. It's called fulminant liver failure, and is probably from the acetominophen in the pain pills when mixed with alcohol. I agree with the previous answerer that he probably died in his sleep and did not suffer. That is good for him, but terribly hard on those he leaves behind. He probably had scarring on his liver from his heavy drinking, which made it more difficult for his liver to filter the toxins (acetominophen & alcohol). Again, I'm so sorry you have to go through this. I'll keep you in my thoughts.  (+ info)

if a person drinks windex can they die of liver failure right away?

I talked to this guy and he said he drank some windex just for fun. How can a person drink windex and still be alive? isn't windex poison to the liver?
isn't it going to put a person in liver failure right away?

Why did my husband recently died from liver failure?

He had rotator cuff surgery 5 weeks prior. After visiting with our family doctor I saw in his medial records that his liver enzymes were "high" prior to surgery. The medical examiner indicated to me that his enzymes were "mildly elevated". Is anyone familiar with this and what should I do?
----------

What purpose is there in doing anything? You can't help him now, poor man. I am sorry about your loss.  (+ info)

What's the difference between hepatoxicity and liver failure? My doctor said my blood tests showed some ....?

signs of toxicity. I asked if I would need a liver transplant and he said no. Of course I'm happy about that, but he wasn't very clear about it all.
----------

toxicity of the liver can be due to drugs/alcohol etc. liver failure means the liver is in the end stage of liver disease like cirrhosis, cancer, hepatitis, aids, etc-- what are you doing to make your liver toxic?  (+ info)

What medication can be taken to prevent liver and kidney failure due to excessive intake of alcohol?

My husband drinks alot of beers, he says that 2 beers a day is good for the kidneys, I disagree.
----------

2 beers a day is not excessive for a grown man. I know a former nurse that weighs about 80 lbs. and drinks a beer every day--she's 90 years old!

Milk thistle is the only herb known to regrow bad liver.
Cranberry juice is good for the kidneys.  (+ info)

What are the symptoms of someone dying from Liver Failure?

I have tried to search but nothing very specific has come up, I need to know. Not for my self but some one who is in the hospital.
----------

End stage liver failure usually manifests itself in these ways:

Jaundice (yellow skin) - may go away and come back
Ascites - looks like a really swollen belly
Nausea and vomiting, fever and fatigue.

Treatment is liver transplant. Best wishes to you and your loved one in this difficult time.  (+ info)
