My ex boyfriend says he has "acute liver failure"?

Please don't answer unless you know what you're talking about.

Anyway, my ex Cal says he has acute liver failure and that he has a 20% chance of living.

Is it even possible to die from that? :/
I read on Wikipedia that it can also be caused by excessive alcohol intake, which is how he got it because he started drinking alot after August. I don't think he can get the transplant. Without this liver transplant.. he won't make it..?
----------

I'm really sad to hear this, but unfortunately he is not likely to live unless enough of his liver starts working again to give him some time to get well enough for a transplant.

It is likely he is on the transplant list, but unless he can demonstrate being free of alcohol AND someone who is a suitable donor dies while he is still well enough for transplant, he won't get the transplant.

Sadly we are seeing more and more people having liver failure when young because of the binge drinking culture.  (+ info)

Is there any way he could be treated?...acute liver failure.?

well, my friend has acute liver failure and told me yesterday that he has been having cramps in his stomach for around 6 weeks and that he might die..is this possible?..and could he be treated in anyway because both of his kidneys are damaged so he can't have a kidney transplant.

how does coxsackie virus cause acute liver failure in young children from 5 to 10 years?

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT COXSACKIE VIRUS AND ITS ROLE IN CAUSING ACUTE LIVER FAILURE IN YOUNG CHILDREN BETWEEN 7 TO 10 YEARS,

WILL THIS VIRUS REATTACK IN FUTURE EVEN AFTER A LIVER TRANSPLANT
----------

that would be something to ask an infectious disease specialist physician...not much on the internet about this..there are at least 2 types of coxsackie virus..A and B...treatment is dependent upon the symptoms and problems caused by the virus...here are two links...some viruses can hide and come back later when the immune system goes down (ie chickenpox to shingles)..even bacteria (ie TB without treatment that the body traps and makes inactive)...so it is possible concievably for it to come back?

how to differentiate clinically between liver cirrhosis, portal hypertension, acute liver failure ?

and hepatic encephalopathy
----------

portal hypertension, acute liver failure and hepatic encephalopathy and complications of liver cirrhosis.
i'll have to explain the blood circulation on the liver to make it clear. our liver has 2 blood supply and 1 outlet. the outlet is the vena cava. if you have cirrhosis. the liver is less permeable to blood. which means the blood do not easily pass. if thats the case your pressure will increases because of the constant supply but decrease in outflow. causing portal hypertension.
hepatic encephalopathy is caused by increase in ammonia. a product of our body's metabolism.which means waste. too much ammonia will be toxic to the brain. with the liver not functioning properly the body cannot metabolize ammonia. causing ammonia build up affecting our brain. causing swelling or encephalopathy.
acute liver failure means malfunction of the liver. non functioning liver. thats very fatal.  (+ info)

Explain the process of Overdosing on Tylenol (Acute Liver Failure)......is it painful?

please answer as many questions as possible. its for a science project

- how much tylenol is needed (how many mg? g? pills?)
- how long after overdoing does liver failure start?
- detailed process of liver failure? (what exactly happens and when?)
- when would it be too late to seek medical attention?
- how painful is it? (which phases are the most painful?)
- why is it painful?
- how exactly would you die?
- how long after overdosing would you die?
- would taking more tylenol make the process faster?
- what are the symptoms of each phase?
- any type of treatment?
- what kind of care would you be put in?
- what type of pain is being experienced?
- would you get any other effect from the tylenol overdose? (ex. get sick or high?)
- how often does this happen? (accident or intentional?)

in acute liver failure, why should we give insulin together with glucose?

The liver is the largest organ in the body that stores and manufacture glucose to the body when in need. In acute liver failure, the liver literally is not working, hence the term "fail". Since the liver cannot store or manufacture glucose, a person with this condition must be given glucose.

Insulin is released by the pancreas, and lowers down excess sugar in the body. However, in liver failure, pancreas also fails to function because its blood vessels are closely related to the liver. A person with acute liver failure cannot control glucose in his/her blood, and therefore insulin must be administered to control it.

Hope that helped somewhat.  (+ info)

Liver failure?

Once the liver completely shuts down and a patient has been taken off of the donor list due to poor health, how much time can we expect the person to live. Also, patient has a DNR in place.

I ask because I just found out a really good friend of mine is being taken to hospice due to his liver failure.
----------

Once the liver COMPLETELY shuts down, death will follow in hours.

But "liver failure" doesn't always mean total. Even a tiny amount of liver function can keep someone alive (not living well, but alive.)  (+ info)

liver failure...?

i was recently told i had liver failure about a week ago. I had all these symptoms that led to liver failure and when i got to the ER, the doctors said that i got help right on time or i would have more complications later on with my liver. I'm in the hospital right now and i was wondering how long it would take to stay in the hospital after finding out i have liver failure. I did ask my doctor and they said about 3 more weeks, i want to know why that long? and i'm 13 years old so i was wondering how will i get better or will i eventually need surgery, thats the thing i don't want.
Can anyone PLEASE help me......
----------

I would trust the Docs..............It is no fun.............Hopefully they can fix you up..........
At least you can get a new one now.........people can give you half of theirs.....It grows back..........
Maybe it will be a lot less drastic.....
Good Luck....  (+ info)
