what is a liver tested for prior to transplantation?

Is a liver tested for any diseases prior to being used for transplant? I'm asking specifically because of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a genetic disease of the liver.
----------

When a liver is considered for transplant, the donor is tested for pretty much everything you can imagine. The docs will make sure the liver enzymes in the blood are normal, the donor does not have hepatitis, and there is no history of cirrhosis, etc. Often, an ultrasound and/or CT scan is done of the donor liver. Occasionally, a liver biopsy is performed prior to approving the liver for donation.

The final step is when the liver is harvested and the doc literally holds the donor liver in his hands.

Even if the donor has A1A deficiency, the disease only effects the liver in 15% if the cases. Hypothetically, a donor with A1A deficiency could still donate a healthy liver.   (+ info)

What are the diseases with Carbon Tetrachloride?

what are the diseases with carbon tetrachloride? how does one acquire this disease, and what are it's effects? what are its effects on the liver?
----------

There are virtually no long term effects unless you have been exposed to large amounts of Carbon Tetrachloride. If that has happened, you should probably be seeing a doctor! This stuff is what's burning a hole in our ozone layer, and it'll burn a hole in your central nervous system, liver and kidneys. I don't think there are any specific diseases associated with the chemical, it's just a poison.  (+ info)

What is the difference between an unhealthy liver and a healthy liver?

for instance, liver diseases such as cirrhosis comparing with a healthy liver
----------

A normal healthy liver is smooth and has a soft texture.
When inflammation develops inside the liver, the
liver enlarges in size and takes on a spongy texture.
In Cirrhosis, when the cells start to die off and form
scar tissue inside the liver...The liver takes on a
nodular or lumpy appearance, start to shrink in
size and then become hard textured. The liver is
dying inside the patient.

The liver cells are what does the functions of the
liver (over 500 of them). When they become damaged,
the enzymes that the liver cells makes leaks out and
goes higher in the blood tests results. As the liver
cells die off, the functions they do, to keep the body
well, starts to deteriorate. This is known as liver
failure. AS more cells die, the less able these functions
can be done until a person reaches a point where they
are in "complete liver failure"...failure to do any
necessary functions...they need a transplant in order
to live.

There are many things that can cause liver cell damage:
alcohol consumption, medication toxification,
chemical exposure, fatty liver disease, auto immune
disease, hereditary conditions, metabolic disorders,
mushroom poisoning, viral infection (like hepatitis A,B,C),
parasite infections, cardiac/vascular problems,
tumors/growth/cysts/cancer, biliary obstruction/malformation/
infection and other things.

Which liver diseases are the most common?

In adults, cirrhosis, the death of liver cells due to a variety of causes, is one of the most common reasons for which liver transplantation is done. In children, the disease most often treated by liver transplantation is biliary atresia, a failure of the bile ducts to develop normally to drain bile from the liver.  (+ info)

Are there any doctors or people that know about liver diseases that can help me with something??

What is a disease/problem with the liver that would look like a growth on the liver when you had an ultrasound, and would give back "odd results" when you had bloodwork done? It is a disease that is not life threatening, and could probably be taken care of with short time medicine use, but is still very serious. Please don't ask why I need to know...lol...it's a long story!! Thanks in advance for your help!!
