What is the difference between an abscess and a boil?

is an abscess and a boil treated the same way? what are the differences between them? What causes them to occur?
----------

Boils are caused usually by a bacteria. An abscess is caused by an infection witch causes swelling and should be looked at by a doctor or dentist, because the infection could travel through your body and then you're in trouble. Good Luck  (+ info)

What happens if a skin abscess is left untreated?

Specifically, if a skin abscess is fairly large, deep, red and painful and there is an associated fever, what are the consequences of not seeing a physician? Can this situation resolve itself on its own? And if not, what may happen as a result of the untreated abscess?
----------

It depends on what you've had done so far, a simple abscess is initially treated with 7 days of oral antiboitics, if after this point the abscess is still not resolving then incision and drainage in day case theatre is the usual next step.

If its deep, red and you've got a fever, u almost certainly need antiboitics and further assessment. The risk of not seeking help is progression to sepsis / skin loss and grafting.

Hope this hasnt scared you too much lol.  (+ info)

What is an average time of abscess tooth drainage?

I'm going to the dentist tomorrow. And I'm pretty sure I will be having a abscess tooth drainage done if antibiotics don't work. My cheek is swelled up,and so is small part of the gum on the same side.

So what is an average time of abscess tooth drainage? And how exactly is it preformed?
----------

Lancing an abscess and placing a drain in it is a last resort. Unless all the infection is localized in one area ,it will not be done. A course of antibiotics will first be tried. Good luck.  (+ info)

What could elevated liver enzymes mean in a newborn besides liver disease?

My 2 1/2 month old son has had elevated liver enzymes since birth. We saw a liver specialist today and he said he doesn't think it's any kind of liver disease, but could be other things. Only he didn't explain what the other things are.
----------

A liver specialist would be a hepatologist. (A gastroenterologist deals with the entire digestive system) It may not be a liver problem but could be a biliary problem. The liver makes bile that flows through tube like structures, known as ducts, under the liver to the gallbladder and then to the intestines. The bile helps emulsify the fats we eat so they can be digested.

These problems comes to mind:
Biliary atresia where bile ducts are absent or injured, causing bile to back up into the liver. Congenital Biliary cysts, or cystic fibrosis.

However, in some cases, some patients have elevation of these enzyme levels and it is normal for them.

There are different hereditary liver diseases, but you said it wasn't the liver...however, here is a listing of some of them:
***Hemochromatosis (abnormal iron accumulation )
***Wilson's disease (abnormal copper accumulation in the liver).
*** Alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency which is the absence of this specific enzyme in the liver
***Galctosemia is a rare genetic disorder that hampers the body's ability to process the sugar galactose. Fructuse intolerance
***Polyphyria
***Urea cycle defects (ornithine carbomoyltransferase deficiency)
***Glycogen storage disease where there is an inability to properly utilize sugar.
....Amino acid disorders[tyrosinemia),
---Bile acid disorders
....Carbohydrate disorders (eg fructose intolerance, galactosemia,)
....Lipid disorders (abetalipoproteinemia)
Inherited diseases interfere with the way the liver produces, processes and stores enzymes, proteins, metals, and other substances.
....Phenylketonuria is a rare condition in which a baby is born without the ability to properly break down an amino acid called phenylalanine. It is inherited...both parents have to pass on the gene.

The liver enzymes are made by the liver cells. The one liver enzyme would naturally be elevated and that is the Alkaline phosphatase...since the child is growing and this is elevated because of the growth of the bones. The doctor is probably also looking at the liver functions tests ( Bilirubin, Albumin, INR, Pt, Ptt) and also the viral tests for hepatitis A,B,C,etc. To look up these tests and the liver enzymes (ALT, AST, GGT, and Alkaline Phosphatase), here is a link to click on:

Don't be afraid to ask questions to your son's doctor...you are paying him for his advice, diagnosis, and time. He may not know, without testing being done, exactly what the problem is off hand. When he gets the results of all testing back...he will then be able to give you more information and a possible diagnosis. I will tell you that he is probably having more blood testing done and will compare it to the first set...as blood testing is not always 100% accurate and many things can affect these tests.

I hope this information has been of help to you. Best wishes  (+ info)

Why has the abscess on my gum not gone down after a treating it with antibiotics?

I'm about to finish a 5 day course of antibiotics to treat an abscess on my gum. The abscess hasn't grown anymore but also it hasn't got smaller or gone completely. Should it have gone by now? I only have 2 more tablets to go. I'm due to see my dentist again in about 10 days time.
----------

How to get rid of an abscess in the arm pit?

I have a abscess in my arm pit and has gotten bigger. My mother and gf tried to pop and drain it but so far it hasn't done much leaking. Does anyone know how it was cause and whats the best way to get rid of it? I want to make going to the doctor a last resort.
----------

I'm sorry but I think the only way to truly get rid of it is to have it lanced at your doctor's office. Here's a link that has a ton of answers about abscesses.

http://symptoms.wrongdiagnosis.com/cosymptoms/abscess/underarm-lump.htm

And if you're really strong take a look at this video on youtube showing a guy getting his underarm abscess being taken care of at the doctor's. His looks pretty big, so I wouldn't recommend you letting yours get out of control!

Does swishing with peroxide help an abscess tooth?

I have had an abscess tooth for 3 weeks. I can't have it pulled right now. I have been trying salt water and have been on penicillin. The infection is much better than it was, but I still have the infection. My gum line is still swollen and it continues to seep. Any other at home remedies or suggestions to relieve the swelling in my mouth and under my chin?
----------

The dentist can drain the abscess, he doesn't necessarily have to pull the tooth.

Peroxide is good, but it's not going to help the part below the gumline.  (+ info)
