How to tell my parents I want to be checked for Generalized Anxiety Disorder ?

I have a worring promblem and I would like to no why I worry so much. I worry to the point of crying. I think I might have Generalized Anxiety Disorder. How do i ask my parents to get me checked for it?
----------

I'll assume that your parents are nice people, and you're worrying. The other case would be that your parents are not easy to talk to, but since you say you worry a lot, I'll assume it's your worrying.

If your parents are not easy to talk to, maybe get a relative to break the news to who knows your parents. They can help judge how you can approach your parents. Some parents are very busy and may prefer a more direct approach. Others might prefer you sit down and talk with them.

If your parents are easy to approach, I'd consider going to one of them. Both at the same time would be more difficult for you, so don't try to tell both at the same time. Tell your mom or dad (whoever is easier for you to talk to) that you've noticed you have been stressed out over worrying to the point it's greatly affecting your life. It can be really hard to admit that you're crying over this, but that could help to know if you feel comfortable saying so. It is very serious if you're crying over your worrying.

You can read on Wikipedia about the symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder and possibly the diagnostic criteria, and see how familiar they sound to you. Don't diagnose yourself, but this is a decent place to start. When you approach either parent, you can then tell them that you did a bit of research and feel you need to be checked out by a doctor. Your family doctor can recommend a psychiatrist, or you can find your own through your insurance provider, if you have one. If you don't have insurance, you might qualify for free care at your city's mental health clinic, but a private doctor would be better.

I myself suffer from bipolar disorder, paranoia, and agoraphobia - fear of leaving the house. It takes work to get to the point of being open about your inner most feelings, but you will get better. The first hurdle will seem the highest, but it will get you on the track you need to be on to get the help you need.  (+ info)

How to handle generalized anxiety disorder?

i have recently been diagnosed with generalized anxiety order, and i suffer from frequent nausea, and feeling a lump in my throat, and am always fatigued. what can i do while the doctors try to find the right meds for me?
----------

Hi Stylish

Here are some ideas to heal the issue.

Cause
Anxiety disorders occur in people of all ages, but appear to be more common among women. The occurrence of an anxiety or panic attack is often unpredictable, but it may be associated with certain situations such as driving a car. The exact cause is complex, involving constitutional factors, emotional stress, biochemical imbalances, and environmental triggers. In women, hormone imbalances can cause anxiety. Therefore, hormone assessment is essential. Amino and fatty acid imbalances can also play an important role in triggering anxiety attacks.

Natural Cures

Diet: Assess your diet to reduce excessive consumption of stressor foods such as refined sugars, honey, maple syrup, or cow`s milk products. Consume vegetable soups, broths, and a wide variety of green and yellow vegetables. Add more complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, beans, seeds, and nuts.

Flower Essences: Flower essences can prove very helpful in managing and helping to eliminate anxiety. Use Aspen for apprehension, foreboding, and fear of unknown origin while Mimulus is for fear of known things, shyness, and timidity. Red chestnut is used for excessive anxiety and over caring for others. Rescue Remedy® (combination formula) is for general stress from anxiety, and Rock Rose is helpful for coping with terror and panic from known fear.

Herbs: Panax ginseng has a tonic effect on the adrenal glands, improving blood flow to the brain and reducing the stress associated with mental/emotional issues. Valerian root, an herbal tranquilizer and muscle relaxant, is another good agent for calming the nervous system. It helps balance mood swings and is not habit forming. Valerian-hops combination formulas are good daytime sedatives because they don`t interfere with reflex actions. Passionflower is another mild sedative that helps reduce anxiety, high blood pressure, nervous tension, and muscle tension, and encourages deep, restful sleep. St. John's wort, a highly popular remedy for depression, has proven effective for anxiety and mood swings as well.

Homeopathy: Aconite, Actaea rac., Drosera, Calc carb., and Sulfur are all useful homeopathic remedies for dealing with anxiety.

Hypnotherapy: Self-hypnosis helps to impart to the mind imagery designed to bring about deep levels of relaxation.

Meditation: Develops the mind`s ability to stop anxiety at its source.

Nutritional Supplementation: The following supplements have all been shown to help reduce feelings of anxiety by calming the nervous system: calcium, magnesium, vitamin B complex, 5-HTP, pantothenic acid, and adrenal and kidney glandulars. GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), an amino acid, can also affect mood by increasing levels of the brain neurotransmitter serotonin (a mood regulator).

Alternative Professional Care
If your symptoms persist despite the above measures, seek the help of a qualified health professional. The following professional care therapies have all been shown to be useful for treating and relieving the symptoms of anxiety: Acupressure, Biofeedback Training, Bodywork (especially Massage Therapy), Environmental Medicine, Guided Imagery, Hypnotherapy, Magnetic Field Therapy, Naturopathic Medicine, Orthomolecular Medicine (for a self-care approach, we recommend the book The Mood Cure by Julia Ross), Qigong, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Yoga.

Is this possible with a person having a congenital heart disease?

I'm not sure if this is medically proven or correct coz i just invented this. For example, a person is born with congenital heart disease, and his heart is weak ever since. But he is an athlete. He plays basketball since he was a child. And being an athlete helps him survive, because basketball is a sport and sport is a form of exercise, right? And exercise is good for the heart. So he survived BECAUSE of playing basketball? Can that possibly happen?
----------

Children and adults with congenital heart defects can tolerate varying levels of exercise. Generally, exercise restrictions are based on the severity and type of heart defect.
People with mild heart defects usually can participate in any type of sport or exercise. Those who have moderate or severe defects or who have had surgery require careful evaluation by a health professional before starting an exercise or sports program. Often a stress test EKG (a type of electrocardiogram) is done to determine the effect of exercise on the heart. Many children have this test by the time they start school and become involved with physical education classes and other activities.http://www.revolutionhealth.com/conditions/heart/congenital-heart-disease/live-with/exercise  (+ info)

How can I deal with Generalized Anxiety Disorder?

I just discovered I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder and I don't know what to do. I have fatigue and my body hurts all day long. I'm very shy and have no friends and get mad very easily. I feel really depressed and feel alone. I heard that I need to exercise more often and try a relaxing activity like yoga. But what else can I do? How long will it take for me to heal? I'm 15 years old.
----------

First off, if you really want to get better, you can start by trying the advice you've already been given. There is no magical cure for GAD or overnight fix. You are young, so I can understand you impatience and wanting a quick fix. But the longer you search for one--the longer you will be putting off what really works.

There are also other tools to help besides medication. Since you don't have a specific phobia, it's harder to pinpoint a trigger. However, anxiety feeds anxiety. You should try to identify negative thinking trends and focus on dismissing negative thought. You can, I know because I have along with a countless number of other people.

It takes commitment to getting better. Do searches on positive affirmations and RBT.

The most important thing is to commit yourself to change and understand that it will take time. Don't waste your time looking for quick fixes--some work--such as medications, but it's not a permanent solution and you will become dependent if you don't address your core issues. You have an opportunity to change the direction of the rest of your life. Put in the work now so you won't regret it later.  (+ info)

I have a question about mild/moderate generalized enamel hypoplasia?

I have 3 cavities needing to be filled. One or two of the three in the front I think.
My dentist recommended that I get ZOOM teeth whitening done, THEN get the white fillings matched to the new shade of my teeth.
I read the consent form for Zoom and it said something about open cavities and the bleaching gel getting into will cause substantial pain.
So then why is my dentist not doing my fillings first, then the ZOOM?
Also, I have mild/moderate generalized enamel hypoplasia and she said the ZOOM would blend all my white spots in (and my teeth are a bit yellow to begin with).
I did read something about ZOOM being less effective on white spots...so am I going to end up with blotches?
What are your opinions?
BTW, I have heard having ZOOM done is like chewing on tinfoil.
----------

Your dentist is not doing the fillings first for exactly the reasons you stated in your question. There are some people who have decent sized (large) cavities who can expect the pain that you describe, but if you have "garden variety" average cavities, it should not be a problem. If you are really afraid about this, you can ask about the slower but less "shocking" home whitening treatment. The incidence of sensitivity is much, much lower this way.

I would never tell a patient that any whitening will "even out" the white spots as this is very unpredictable.  (+ info)

how to deal with a coworker who has Generalized Anxiety Disorder?

I work with someone who has been officially diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I used to be to kinda close with this person but I'm not anymore since her symptoms and her general stupidity have gotten out of hand . It's a miracle how / why she even still working here. Anyways how do I deal with her now that she's been diagnosed with this illness? She's always acts so insecure and helpless around me and it's really annoying.
In addition to being really helpless and needy she's 63 years old.

She's going to get Electro Convulsive Therapy next month too. What is she going to be like after this?
----------

There is not much you can do, people can't be fired because of their illnesses, I am in a similar position..my boss has manic depression and is on Prozac I recognise her illness and try to be sensitive to her illness, she never thanks me for doing most of her work as well as my own and at times she is so unnecessarily rude to me that the only way I can cope is to give her some of her own back that usually changes her attitude. They need to realise we too have emotions and it's not all about them and their illness. Perhaps you will have to be blunt with her and tell her to" give it a rest" as she is getting you down.  (+ info)

I have congenital nystagnus, if I have a baby will they be at risk for developing this anymore than others?

Around 5 months age I was diagnosed with congenital nystagnus, I have always wanted kids, and assumed I would have them. But in reading about parenting, I am starting to become concerned that if I have a child they will be more at risk for developing this than any other child. Is that so? Is nystagnus hereditary? Or is my child no more likely to develop it than any other child?

----------

If you or someone who know has been diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, or MD, then you are most likely curious to understand the causes, symptoms and treatments of MD. Muscular dystrophy is a genetic disease that causes different muscles to weaken and worsen with time. There are several different types of MD which can affect different muscles and have various outcomes.

The cause of muscle dystrophy is genetics. In most cases of MD the mother will be the carrier and pass it along to their male children. However, in Facioscapulohumeral MD, both males and females are affected equally.

Female children will have a 50 percent chance of carrying the gene. It is possible to detect the muscle dystrophy gene when you are pregnant. If you have a history of MD, then it's best to make sure. Consult a genetic doctor who can perform a test with 95 percent accuracy to see if the gene has been carried on.

Symptoms of muscle dystrophy vary in severity depending on the type of MD you have. Facioscapulohumeral MD affects the upper body and the face. Droopy eyelids, troubles hearing, difficulty pronouncing words and decreased facial expression are all symptoms of Facioscapulohumeral MD. Becker's MD affects the lower body including the legs and the pelvis.

However, with both Facioscapulohumeral MD and Becker's MD, it's possible to live an extended life, often with no disability. Duchenne's MD is another story.

Duchenne's MD is the most severe and usually causes constraint to a wheelchair and an early death. The muscle weakness is simply too severe and often complications can result from this. Most young boys who have been diagnosed with Duchenne's MD will not live past their 25th birthday.

Muscle dystrophy treatment includes physical therapy, group therapy, orthopaedic braces and oral corticosteroids. Unfortunately there is no cure for MD. Instead the focus is on strengthening the muscles and lessening the severity of the symptoms. In some instances, such as with Facioscapulohumeral MD, there may be no symptoms at all. However, in other cases, such as with Duchenne's MD, the symptoms and the consequences are devastating.  (+ info)
