How would a physician differentiate between eosinophilic esophagitis and severe oral lichen planus?

I am diagnosed with only oral lichen planus, never had a purple papule on flexor surfaces. I have no lower esophogeal sphincter tone, and severe esophagitis.
The physician would use Gastroscopy.

Which is the difference between oral lichen planus of the tongue and oral hairy leukoplakia of the tongue?

From the pictures i have seen on the internet they seem the same to me.I have these little white irregular lines that sometimes appear on the lateral sides of my tongue but when i see the pictures they resemble to oral hairy leukoplakia and lichen planus of the lateral sides of the tongue.I just want to know how can i distinguish the main differences between the two as far as their appearance and symptoms are concerned?
I think that this should clear it up! This is from my Kerr and Ash's Oral Pathology book from 1986. I am not convinced that anything has changed.

Lichen planus is a relatively common dermatological (skin) disease with oral manifestations in about 1/3 of the cases. The clinical oral manifestation vary from flat or slightly elevated lesion with striae to extensive areas of ulceration or erosion (erosive lichen planus). Except for the erosive type, the oral lesions are seldom a diagnosis problem or require treatment. The presence of skin lesions helps to make a diagnosis in erosive lichen planus. It has unknown etiology, but may be stress related and looks white and lacey.

Oral hairy leukoplakia is a viral leukoplakia of the tongue in immunosuppressed male homosexuals who have or may develop the features of AIDS..... Clinical lesions appear as white, slightly raised "hairy" plaques on the tongue, they usually do not rub off to leave a bleeding surface as may be seen in candidial lesions.

I have been given predisone and triamcinolone to help with the lesions on my skin, but neither do anything for my tongue and I'm at the end of my rope. Any suggestions would be so deeply appreciated.
I've read that aloe vera juice (the kind you can drink) is great for gargling, then swollowing. Also, you should avoid all products with sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and peroxide, so check your toothpaste/mouthwash carefully. I've read that biotene is good. Finally, avoid all acidic foods, such as tomatoes. You can neutralize the acid by adding a bit of sugar.

This is a nasty autoimmune disorder, so the prednisone should help a bit. I'd also suggest finding an online forum/group for this disorder because you'll glean incredible information from people who've had this for a while.

I am getting so peeved off with it and so far everything the doctors have prescribed only gives temporary short term relief. In fact I don't even think they really know how to treat it.

Hey there, my name is Dan and I'm 18 years old and I'm going to see an Oral Surgeon in March about some painless white lines and white spots in my mouth. I beleive smoking has had some sort of effect on my mouth. Assuming cigarettes contain arsenic and many other carcinogenic substances, I beleive what has developed in my mouth is causing Lichen Planus, any help will be appreciated.
I've seen countless GP's and they all seem to also think Lichen Planus, I was just recently asked to go see an Oral Surgeon by my GP to be sure it's nothing serious.
Yes, lichen planus is a somewhat common occurence and normally harmless. However, an oral surgeon consult wouldn't be a bad idea just in case. Since you are a smoker, sometimes there can be precancerous cells and the oral surgeon can detect and remove before a problem occurs. Just make sure they do not want to do a ViziLite check on you, don't waste your money. You want someone who has a VelScope.  (+ info)

Oral lichen planus?

My dad has lichen planus in the mouth and on his skin as well. He has gone to go see a specialist who diagnosed him with it about 2 months ago. His next appointment isn't until the end of November since the doctor is so busy, so meanwhile it seems to be getting worse especially in his mouth. I know it makes him uncomfortable, embarrassed, and I can tell it bothers him so much. He wants to avoid the steroids as much as possible. Right now he's using some toothpaste and mouthwash from the biotene brand, he uses some aloe vera products, and takes vitamin A. Another thing is that I know it's an autoimmune disease stemming from stress, which describes my dad to the tee, but sadly that's how he's always been and I don't think that will change since it's in his nature to feel that way no matter what anyone says. I also heard that lichen planus can come from digestive problems to which my dad also has. Is there something out there to help him, because I can tell it's secretly breaking him down
I think to get it under control, he'll need to do the steroids (topical only...not systemic). Most of the time, LP is not a big deal, but it sounds like your dad may have erosive LP (ELP), which can be a precursor to cancer. Some people swear by CoQ10 treatment, some by High colonics. I can't comment on the efficacy of those therapies.  (+ info)
